Day 2 Post-Op (with a pic)

I wanted to write more, but it's so hard to do this while lying down...

I barely slept last night--I just cannot get comfortable! My abdomen hurts SO BADLY. My mom came over at 4:30 this morning to help me out when Jerry left for work. I spent most the whole morning lying in bed watching TV. Renee and Jessica were going to come visit me today, but I had to tell them to postpone it because I just didn't feel up to it.

Everything completely exhausts me. Just getting up to go to the bathroom felt like I had run 10 miles. After lunchtime, I decided to try to recline in the recliner in the living room. That was much more comfortable than the bed. The doctor said I can reline, but I have to keep it very low--she doesn't want me to SIT for 10 days.

She told me I could shower, but I was terrified to take off the binder. The doctor called me to see how I was doing and I told her I was scared to shower, but she explained it to me again and so I decided to try it. Getting the stuff off was easy--but holding the drains while showering was impossible, so I had my mom reach into the shower and hold the drains up so that I could wash myself.

I changed into the fresh compression garment, which was easier than I expected. The doc agreed with me in that I might want to buy a small--the medium will do for now, because I'm swollen, but in a week or two she thinks I'll want to wear a small. So I have to order that today.

I was a little shocked when I looked in the mirror at my incisions today. I know (from looking at others' post-op pictures) that it's going to look really bad for a while, but I was still in shock. My back is really bruised, and she has dressing packed into my belly button. I'm worried that my belly button looks asymmetrical, but I've read that can be caused from swelling and everything heals at different speeds.

I really like the shape of the incision line--she kept it very low, even on my hips. When she was marking me for surgery, she said that she doesn't do those "french cut" hips from the 80's, where the scar goes up over the hip bone. Remember those panties that had really high cut lines on the sides? She said she does the incisions to hide underneath a boy-cut panty instead, which is much more my style.

I'm actually going to show you a picture today, since you've all been asking. Please don't critique me! This is just two days post-op, so of course everything looks pretty gross right now. I still have gauze packed into my belly button, so it looks weird, but I think I can take that out tomorrow. The orange you see on my thigh is from a tape that is holding my pain pump in place.

"Before" (obviously)

I'm not ready to show my butt yet! ;)  I cannot believe I'm even posting this "before" picture, because I'm SOOOO self-conscious of my belly!  Once I get the drains out (and the belly button gauze and stitches) I'll probably start taking more post-op pics. It just looks ugly right now, but I think that the incision looks pretty good compared to a lot of other pics I've seen.

For those of you that asked, the doctor ended up removing about 2-3 pounds of skin--not much! She said that I didn't have a lot of fat attached to the skin, so the number isn't very impressive.

Anyway, I am feeling much much better now than I was yesterday or even earlier today. I've been eating tons of protein. Taking my meds as prescribed. Emptying my drains. Doing everything by the book.

Most importantly, I want to thank you all SO MUCH for your e-mails, comments, and support through this. When I told my mom today about my online "friends" she was really touched that complete strangers have become so close to me.

I really do consider you my friends, and it makes me feel so good to know that you are thinking of me!  I'm going to try and respond to everyone, but I haven't been spending much time on the computer (it's hard to type lying down!)  So please bear with me if it takes a while. Just know that I really appreciate it!

My Dr. Oz Show airs on Friday!! I saw a preview on TV for it today :)

  1. I read your blog every day. Although I don't comment all of the time I find you to be really inspirational. Your honesty about the processing of losing weight and being healthy has touched me. I think you are so brave taking this step and sharing it with the world. You have nothing to be embarassed about. You look FANTASTIC...I can only imagine how much better it is going to be when you are completely healed. Keep taking care of yourself. You deserved this because you earned it. Again...you look great!

  2. It looks better than I expected it would so soon! And your stomach looks awesome!! I admit, my stomach looks much worse than your before shot - my kids REALLY messed me up during my three pregnancies!!

  3. Katie, I know you think that it looks "ugly" as you put it but as an RN I've seen MUCH nastier inscisions. Yours looks absolutely fabulous. Even your before picture isn't something you should be self concious of. You earned every bit of that sagging skin through your hard work. Almost like a badge of honor. And you earned and deserved to have the surgery to correct everything. So excited and proud of you. Can't wait for Friday!!!!

  4. I COMPLETELY agree with Megan! You look amazing! I feel so honored that you chose to share your pictures with us. No judgement at all...I feel so proud of you for doing what you did and am totally impressed with how candid you are! Hang in there! The pain is temporary! I am definitely sending lots of happy, healing thoughts to you.

  5. Katie- you DO have a TEENY TINY waist! Oh my gosh it looks fantastic! (not gross at all!) It doesn't even look swollen!
Thanks for keeping us up to date on your progress. Even your 'before' photo doesn't look as bad as I expected with the way you wrote about it.
I'm envious of your new body but I know you worked HARD for it!!

  6. I've read all of your posts and I can't believe how great you look already! I wonder why the pain can't be controlled better? You're amazing, I don't know if I would have the courage to go through what you are now experiencing!

  7. I am really impressed by the photos! I can completely see your abs under all of that skin! And even with the swelling you have a little waist! I do think you will be bikini ready! I don't think your stretch marks are noticable at all!

  8. I know exactly how you feel self conscious about the "ugly" before belly...I have the same sight when I look in the mirror. But your after picture is amazing! I am so happy for you and still praying for your recovery.

  9. Thank you so much for posting the before and after! It is something that so many of us who are trying to lose a significant amount of weight worry about, and seeing your before pic makes me feel better to tell you the truth! Yes, there is some extra skin there, but it isn't bad! You worked to get that! Wishing you a speedy recovery!

  10. You look amazing for only being 1 day post-op. Can you imagine what you'll look like after you're all healed? I'm glad you're doing well.

  11. You look great!! I can't wait to see the after pics when all is healed. Just think, your before pic is now your before pic! It isn't your stomach anymore!! Yahoo! Rest, rest, rest so that the scars are barely there when all is healed. Lots of water. LOL, I have had far too many abdominal surgeries! Keeping you in my prayers.

  12. I have been thinking about you constantly these last couple of days. So glad you made it through the surgery safely and are on the mend! You look fabulous - scars and all!

  13. Wow Katie you really do look great! I can't believe how good you look just 2 days post op and your abs were defined even before surgery! Like everyone else said, your before photo doesn't look half as bad as you described it. When I get to my goal, I know the saggy belly will be outrageous and I've never even had kids. I want to thank you so much for sharing the photos because I know how much my own insecurities hold me back from even letting my own boyfriend see me in the buff so thank you so much and you are so brave! So glad for you, I hope you have a speedy recovery and feel better and better each day! So awesome!!

  18. Your tummy looks great! Thank you so much for sharing the pics. No judgment here, my belly is a mess. I am scared of what it will look like when I get to goal when it looks awful now. You are such an inspiration to me and so many! I told my Mom all about you and she even set her DVR for Dr. Oz Friday.

  21. No fair...the first words that jumped into my head were...YOU ARE AMAZING...posting all of this and pics too after only the second day of surgery!!! (Then , I read the anonymous comment and she said you were amazing too...I guess we all think alike ;-)

Anyways, you truly are. I heard the first 3 days roughly are/were the worse for my neighbor who had the tummy tuck...you are almost there...

Take it easy....it will get better...and you will be loving the boy cut bikini this summer...

  22. Dude! You look AWESOME!!! I cringe a little though thinking of the pain your dealing with. You can already tell it is totally worth it! I'm so glad you have a great support system, your mom is such a sweetie. I wish I lived closer so I could help you out. Well, the least I can do is pray for you and your family so I am doing that. I can't wait for the show on Friday! Get well soon and thanks for sharing the pics!

  26. KATIE!!! It looks so good already!! I know everything is fresh but WOW!! The difference is already something amazing! I'm so happy for you!! You earned this and should enjoy every second of it. I can't wait to see the progress as the swelling goes down and the incisions heal. And I'm so ready to see the show I can stand it!!

  27. You look awesome! Thanks so much for sharing. I've got a tummy similar to your old one, and I've been thinking about maybe having a tuck in a few years (after I lose another 20-30 pounds and get my PhD). Watching your recovery is going to be really neat. Again, thanks so much for sharing with us!

Next I want to see a post-surgery picture of that big, beautiful smile of yours.

  28. I continue to be so impressed with your honesty (especially in the world of blogging which can be so phony at times) and you putting yourself out there to help and inspire others. I hope to be half the blogger that you are, Katie!

Everyone has used the word "amazing" because that's truly what you are and how you look -- you're the real deal. I am praying for the hard part of the recovery to be over ASAP for you, and I feel sure that in the future you will look back on all your hard work and tough times thus far and realize you have earned every ounce of reward that comes your way!! You are so bad ass!!

  29. Wow - your incisions are looking really great for only day two! I'm glad you decided to show your before pic. I'm sure lots of us who comment have weight to lose and extra skin that is left over from what has been lost, so no judgements. Plus, now we can be even more excited for you when you're all healed up and looking fab, because we know where you are coming from. Anyway, glad to hear you're feeling better! All the best!!

  30. I have been following you for the past few months and I just have to say "thank you" for being so raw, open and honest on your blog. As for the pics, your after pic looks fantastic! Your Doc did a wonderful job! Hang in there, the pain will decrease every day.

  31. are you kidding me you look fantstic especially for only being day number two. doesn't seem that you have much swelling going on so I bet you are going to be super tiny when more time pass. Also I didn't see much stretch mark on your belly so I think you will be able to pull a bathing suit next year ;). I am so excited for you. sorry that you are going thru so much pain but the end result will be worth it. well I hope you feel better tomorrow.

  34. Quite honestly I'd be happy to have your before belly as I'm sure mine will end up much worse since I've always carried most of my weight there, but it's so great that you were able to do something about it since it bothered you. You already look amazing even with all the bruising and swelling. I can't wait to see a healed after picture either, and I will definitely be watching on Friday!

  35. Your new bod is bangin'! You have been through so much! All I know is that your one tough chick. I'm so scared of surgery myself but when I get to my goal weight I know that I will have a lot of extra skin. I've got the whole frowny face belly button thing going on right now. I just want it to be a circle! How did they get rid of your stretch marks? They have disappeared!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Katie, you have my deepest respect for this huge step in your life!! Your tummy looks great, just like its hurting a lot at the moment. Just take it easy and take it one day at a time....we are all thinking of you.

  37. wow you look amazing so soon after surgery, I would have expected a lot more swelling and generally ickiness but that's not bad at all. I'm not suprised you're in so much pain though, I've heard it's the most painful plastic surgery you can have which is the bit I'm not looking forward to. I also want to applaud your bravery in posting the pics, thank you for that.

  38. Wow! Wow! Wow! Katie!!!!!! You are looking so tiny already!!!!!! I am so glad that you had the courage to post the pics!!!! You have such a tiny waist!!!!! I am not surprised that your doctor said that there wasn't too much fat, it really looks like flabby skin and not fat in the before picture!!!!
I hope that you sleep better soon and I wish I could come visit you IRL!!!!!!
I look forward to reading your posts everyday!!!!!
    Heal quickly!!!!!!!!!:-)

  39. WOW! You did it! I have to say, I wish my belly looked like your before! My skin still has a lot of fat attached to it, I guess! Now I have to keep up my end of the bargain and show you mine, huh? I bet you feel better because of the shower. Even though you need 4 hands to do it, there's something about being clean and not wallowing in your own filth that tends to give some relief.

Relax. Enjoy doing nothing, especially at this time of year when we're all running around like chickens with our heads cut off. Feel better!

  40. It looks gret to me, they did a good job, you gonna have that tiny waist line now....woohoooo!!! Praying for a speedy recovery too!

  41. ATTA GIRL, KATIE! It's great to see that you did something some monumental for yourself. After years of discipline, you deserve to be comfortable when you run, and have a body that you're not self conscious of. That rocks! I had no idea that a lower body lift was even POSSIBLE. When I was at my lowest weight, I had the extra skin, and were I still there I'd probably consider it. Two kids later and my body back to being " a work in progress", so it's not an option just yet, but I am grateful that you are so honest about the procedure, so I know what the future will hold for me once I get my shit together and get this weight off of me. You look great already, and I hope you feel better soon and recover quickly. It must be hard not to be able to cuddle with the boys just yet, but you'll feel 100% in no time (and have sexy abs to boot ;-) YOU GO GIRL!!!

  42. I have been wondering what your stomach looked like although I never asked and I have only wondered because you look so tiny in your pics! When you see me the first thing you see is my tummy (even though I'm not at goal weight yet) I really don't see that changing! Your tummy was much smaller then you think it was.......it seemed really bad to you because we are all self concious about ourselves! You have nothing to be embarassed of! However your tummy looks amazing now and I'm sure you will feel a lot better! I know you talked about the slin making it hard for you to run and I'm sure this will make it a lot easier for you! I'm so sorry that you are in so much pain and hopefully you'll start to feel better soon! Thanks so much for sharing your pictures because I can only imagine how hard that was but it shows me that I have a lot more to go before my tummy tuck! Take care Katie and I'm so excited for Friday!

  43. Thank you so much for sharing your progress with us! I know we have all been really worried about you during this whole thing and all hope you continue to have a speedy recover and the pain subsides soon. Your stomach looks awesome and soooo flat!! It is not gross at all. I'm so excited for you. Can't wait to see the show on Friday. You are so amazing!

  44. Your pics look really great! I've seen a lot of surgery pics and for being two days out your scars don't look bad at all! By the time you're all healed up they'll barely be noticeable and yay for a flat stomach!

Thank you for sharing the before picture as well. You have nothing to be ashamed of, you've done such amazing things.

I hope you start feeling better soon! I'll be thinking about you, take care <3

  45. Katie I'm so glad you are doing well! I don't think your photos are gross at all. I was very curious to see your before pic. I had no idea what excess skin really looked like. I suppose I could have googled it. . . but I really wanted to see yours! lol. I realize that I have a tiny bit of extra skin from losing ~73 lbs. Not nearly as much as you, but I was wondering if mine was skin or fat. Now I know. :) I'm so glad you are doing well. I cannot wait to see more after photos. It will be fun to see how your healing progresses. Take care!

  47. Wow! I cannot believe how FLAT your tummy is! Man, that's amazing! And you're probably even still kinda swollen. I can't get over how great it looks :) I'm soooooooo excited for you to get through recovery so you can enjoy it and show it off! If I had that tummy, I swear I would go everywhere naked ;) And you had better wear a bikini (every day) with that body!!! I hope you continue feeling better and better :)

  48. I am glad you are doing well! I have been thinking about you. Although I haven't posted much to your blogs or anything, I've been following you for a long time on SP and this blog. You have really inspired me and I love all your recipes and have shared them with people who I know want to eat better. You are going to look good! I already have a lot of loose sagging skin everywhere, and still have 60-65 lbs to lose (I've lost 113). So, I am thinking one day I might want to consider surgery. Anyway, rest up and take care of yourself. You deserve it. :)

You can't imagine my excitement when I started reading your blogs here; caught up on your jaw ordeal, discovered that you had indeed gotten your "after" picture with Dr. Oz, and that you were having the surgery done. Yay!

I'm beyond proud of you for your accomplishment(s) - you are truly an amazing young lady; quite an inspiration to many more than you'll ever even realize.

You worked hard and "earned" the loose belly (and butt) skin; your reward: the surgical procedure (part of it covered by insurance - woo hoo!) which results in a more confident, sexier YOU! You're awesome!

  56. Katie, you are going to look AWESOME once you're completely healed. Major kudos to you for posting pics because I'm not sure I could've done that. It makes me cringe to look at the after pic because I remember how much pain I was after my c-section, but your incision goes what, 3/4 the way around?! I can't begin to imagine that kind of pain. Hang in there, we are all thinking of and pulling for you.

You have such a teeny little waist. :D I've been losing weight for a while now and will probably be very self conscious of my stomach especially when I'm finished. Five years of weight gain have sure taken their toll. Seeing such great results from your surgery motivate me even more, knowing that if I want to, I could have a tummy tuck or lift to fix it in a few years. Keep on healing!!!
