Wednesday Weigh-In: Week 92

I have not been having the greatest day today, so I'm going to try to keep this short. (You know me, though, nothing is ever short!)

I am really proud of myself for how well I did this week in terms of getting back to good eating habits. I swear, it's the initial 4-7 days that are killer, and then after that, it just gets easier. (Not EASY, but easier.)

I was a little disappointed last week when I weighed in because I'd only lost 0.8 pounds--and I felt like I had a pretty good week! I wrote yesterday about Jerry's Beans & Greens turning out to be super salty, causing each of us to gain a couple of pounds overnight. So I hoped--

Okay, I have to stop typing mid-sentence because Noah just walked in the door and made my day. My month. My whole fucking year. HE CUT HIS HAIR!!!!

And holy cow, doesn't he look so amazing?! I absolutely love it. He's super shy about it, and he rarely smiles because he hates his smile, but I was taking a whole burst of pictures and caught this one at the right time.

I can't get over it. Since he hates his smile, the only way I was able to get this picture is when he was laughing at how I was basically screaming how much I love it, hahaha.

...Okay, back to my regular post. Noah totally upstaged my significant weight loss today ;)

After a great week, I really hoped it would show on the scale (especially after that really salty Beans & Greens that caused me to gain two pounds overnight).

Last week, I was at 147.8 and today I was at 144.6! That means I've lost 3.2 pounds this week. Maybe my body just needed a little bit of time to catch up, but I certainly feel like I earned those pounds lost.

This week, I tried to get back to a good routine with my food. I ate my old favorites for breakfast and lunch (Grape Nuts with blueberries and soy milk for breakfast; cold cinnamon raison oats for lunch). I haven't been logging my food, but I've been eating a dinner that's a little on the larger side so that I don't feel tempted to snack on junk all night. I do usually have one snack, but I've been eating prunes and/or dates at night.

Actually, typing this out makes it look like a very sad diet, hahaha. But I love those foods! And I love being able to cook different dinners every night.

The one thing that I really need to make a priority is running. It's been SO sporadic. It seems like every time I start to get into a groove something happens--I was sick, and then my knee started bothering me again (not from running, but just a general knee injury from when I knelt on a screwdriver). I only have less than six weeks until the 10K race with Nathan, and I am 100% determined that I *will* do it!

I think I'll make it a point to go to the state park a few times this week and run there. If I can get myself there, then I'll have no choice but to run. The hardest part is getting started--making myself get out the door! I have been feeling a lot better about myself the past couple of weeks, though, so it's the logical next step.

I can't believe it's March already. I had plans to write some goals for March (nothing huge; you just know how much I like goals).

Okay, as I said, I'm keeping this short! My day is a million times better since seeing Noah, but I've got a lot on my mind. Jerry is off today so I'd like to chat with him. Happy Wednesday!

Transformation Tuesday: The Final Chapter

Well, Friends, I'm sad to say that this is going to be the final Transformation Tuesday. I have always loved these posts, but I haven't been getting submission for them and honestly, it stresses me out if I don't know whether I'll have a post to write. I always liked Tuesdays because I could prepare some of it in advance, making it easier to finish up later in the day. On Monday nights, if I don't have any submissions, then I feel stressed to get a post done. (I know, I'm the one that is putting the pressure on myself; I can't help it! It's who I am.)

It has been so fantastic seeing all of the fun transformations you've shared! I appreciate each and every one. I'd like to try to come up with a new theme for Tuesdays (having a theme is super helpful to me in planning ahead). I've always loved the idea of doing a "reader email" post, where people share anything at all--cool thrift finds, tips for anything all/life hacks, crafts or projects they've made, fun news to share--getting married, buying a house, a job promotion, adopting a baby, etc.. But that still relies on, well, reader email! ;)

So, I'll try and come up with something to do on Tuesdays. But in the meantime, I have one final transformation to share with you from a reader named Jenny. And it's a jaw-dropping transformation!

A few months ago, my shower stopped draining, followed quickly by the toilet no longer flushing. After several plumbers and sewer made visits, everything was draining properly again. HOWEVER, the floor of the shower was torn out in order to access the pipes that were causing all of the issues. So…new bathroom! I’ve always wanted a white bathroom. It feels so light and clean compared to the formerly popular beige phase.

-Jenny

Jenny, your bathroom is STUNNING--and so modern! I especially like the gray tiles in the shower. Seeing how great your bathroom looks now gives me a little hope that someday, my bathroom will be finished. Yours is a great inspiration to not give up hope yet, hahaha. I'm so glad you were able to get your white bathroom :)  -Katie

Well, this is a sad moment for me, but perhaps someday Transformation Tuesday will be a thing again. It's been fun! (And if you have other ideas for Tuesday posts, please share--I'm wide open to suggestions)

Transformation Tuesday #84

Happy Transformation Tuesday! My days are so messed up this week. I was so sure that Sunday was Monday, Monday was Tuesday, and today is Wednesday. I even woke up and did my Wednesday Weigh-In this morning.

Today was Eli's first day of school--he's starting 11th grade. Noah started last week, but his classes are a little odd because they are all college classes now and his schedule is much different. He would normally be starting college this fall with his friends, but because he did a "middle college" program, he's been taking college courses for the last two years. So, it's hard to say what "grade" he's in. But I wanted a picture anyways! So here is a before and "after" of my boys.

OHMYGOSH, I miss that age so much! They were so stinkin' cute. One of these days, I'd like to put together a collage of all of their first days of school.

I'm lucky to have such great kids!

Anyway, I have a couple of readers' transformations to share today as well. Enjoy!

We've been remodeling our basement for 3 months and the end is almost in sight, LOL!

New bathroom- We're adding a second bathroom in the house and decided to upgrade all of the water lines when we had the new plumbing put in, so it's been a pretty major deal in our entire basement all summer. Thankfully breaking up the concrete and re-pouring it only took a few days because I work from home and it was LOUD! And the concrete dust took well over a month to settle, yikes.

Paint- We can't afford to put up drywall, so we had a family friend repaint the cement blocks, the laundry room floor, and even the laundry room ceiling, including all of the pipes, LOL. I had no idea you could just spray everything! Our goal wasn't a finished look, per se, but just something more aesthetic and less dungeon-feeling ;)

Laundry room- We spent hours and hours scraping the old linoleum glue off the floor before it got painted. It's just a plain gray, but I love it. As you can tell, gray is my theme :)  We replaced the old cabinet and counter top on the washer/dryer side, added a beautiful rug (that I loved so much I bought 3 more for the other rooms, ha!) and reorganized and added more storage on the other side. I know there are just as many spiders waiting to get me, but it doesn't FEEL like there are just as many spiders because it's so bright and fresh now ;)

Bedroom- We put waterproof vinyl plank flooring in my son's room (which we will carry into the other side of the basement once the bathroom is done), painted it, and got new furniture and bedding. He is a high school senior and this feels a lot more grown up for him. I'm just so happy looking at it!

-Sonja

Sonja, I don't even know where to start--it all looks so amazing! It must have been a TON of work (that's awesome you had a friend do the painting for you). The bedroom looks so nice and cozy; and I hear you on the spiders. I despise them! Hopefully you won't encounter any now ;)  I'm glad you're enjoying your new space! -Katie

I love seeing people's transformations! Here's a recent one of mine. My husband bought a TV that was too large for our old TV stand (which I hated because it was ugly anyway).  We needed a new stand, but all the ones I liked were between $500 and $1500--crazy in my opinion.  So we took a trip to Goodwill, and found this filthy chipped up one for $17.  It had lots of dings on it, and I didn't like the black color, but we hauled it home and I cleaned and sanded and painted it in our driveway. I like it much better now! And it fits the TV perfectly. Total investment, with paint, was $37. The color is Tidal by Behr.

-Karen McBride

Karen, I love the new color! I always love it when people paint their furniture something bright and fun. Isn't it awesome to see your hard work pay off in the end? As you know, I adore thrift shopping, and this looks like a fun project piece. What a great find!  -Katie

Thank you so much, Karen and Sonja, for sharing your transformations! I'm always in awe when I see before and after photos--so fun. If anyone has a transformation to share, please do so--I always need them! Just send a before photo and an after photo (unedited) to me at: katie (at) runsforcookies (dot) com. Include your name and a description of your transformation. Let's see what you come up with!

I'm going to write this or a few more days on my posts... I decided to create an Amazon Wish List for my cross country team. I did it a few years ago and it was a huge success with the team! I like to use running-related items as rewards for kids who reach certain milestones. They are in the third through fifth grades. If you purchase something, it gets sent directly to me, so you don't have to worry about shipping. And of course I'll post pictures! I can't thank you enough--and I know the kids will be thrilled.

Transformation Tuesday #83

Happy Transformation Tuesday! I had a busy morning babysitting Luke and Riley, and I am writing this before I go to cross country practice. I'm looking forward to today's practice--I'm going to talk about proper running form (so fun! haha) and then we'll do a light run (I'm sure they're sore from yesterday) and play some active games.

I'm sure I have some before and after photos to post of SOMETHING, but I really need to go through my phone and delete a lot of photos. If I ask Jerry to take a picture of me (or if he just does it on his own) he takes literally about 50 pictures! I don't even look at them all--it's like a moving picture book. Anyway, I've been doing some fun stuff with clothing so hopefully I can find pictures.

Here are a couple of readers' transformations for this week!

My husband and I bought a two family home. This is the bathroom in the tenants unit. The house was built in 1931 and remodeled in the 1970s. This bathroom had the vanity replaced at some point, but was otherwise unchanged since the 1970s. The wall tile is mounted directly onto drywall and in some places in the shower the drywall was rotting and tiles were falling off the wall.

In the shower, we repaired the falling tiles and rotted drywall, then glued click together vinyl tiles over the old tile. This will stop further water damage to the walls. We kept the yellow cast iron tub, the flooring and vanity.

We sanded all the remaining wall tiles and then painted them white. We replaced the toilet and medicine cabinet, added towel rings and bars and painted the room grey. Total cost was about $500 but it totally transformed the room. We're hoping to get 3-5 years from this mini remodel before we need to fully gut and completely redo it.

-Meredith

Meredith, I am completely stunned that you transformed the bathroom like that for about $500! It looks absolutely amazing and so modern. I'm impressed with all the work you put into it, too! -Katie

I’m not very crafty and don’t have much time for home improvement projects since I work full time and have two boys (ages 7 months and 3 years) but it was important to me that our baby have his own space so I changed our guest room into his nursery.

Then I showed my 3 year old who gasped and said “Mommy! I need a blue wall too so I can match my brother!” (Impossible to say no to that…)  I also took everyone’s advice and swapped his generic bureau knobs for some Star Wars ones and they make me smile every day.

-Liz

Liz, I love the dark contrast in colors on the walls! If Jerry and I *ever* finish remodeling our bedroom, I've already planned to do a very dark accent wall. Your kids' bedrooms look fantastic--and I love that your three year old wanted to match his brother ;)  (Jerry said the Star Wars knobs are a fantastic choice, haha). -Katie

As always, thank you so much for sharing your transformations with us! If anyone has a transformation to share, just email me a before photo and an after photo, along with your name and a description of the transformation, to: katie (at) runsforcookies (dot) com. Let's see the goods! ;)

Transformation Tuesday #82

Happy Transformation Tuesday! Since today is Jerry's and my 19th wedding anniversary, I thought it would only be appropriate to post a photo of us from then and now. The picture on the left is from the morning after our wedding. We were holding our marriage license (I can't even remember the steps to that whole process) and we made a last-minute decision to drive down to Cleveland for a few days. (We didn't plan a honeymoon because we just didn't have the money to take a trip. Look at us! We were CHILDREN when we got married. Haha! I was 21 and he was 22.)

The second picture was from a little over a week ago when we dressed up a bit to go to a friend's birthday dinner. It's crazy to think of all of the things that have happened in the last 19 years... the most important being Noah and Eli!

Okay, let's get on to the readers' transformations for this week...

My good friend recently had a baby and moved into a new home. As a housewarming gift her boss came over and planted a garden for her in the back yard. My friend is a city girl who has never grown ANYTHING! She was very nervous about having the responsibility of caring for the garden but she watered regularly. And 2 months later it was such a fun “harvest” for her!!!!  I was very impressed.

-Stacy, Richmond, VA

Stacy, I love this little story! What an amazing gift for a boss to do for an employee--that is totally going above and beyond and it sounds like it was very much appreciated. I wish someone would do that for me! I'm thrilled that she discovered gardening and was able to appreciate the harvest :)  -Katie

This is kind of a different transition, but I thought it was cool nonetheless. Every year my family takes a lake vacation to Spofford lake in Chesterfield, New Hampshire. We went as kids in the late 80s/early 90s and now we go with my parents, my brother, and our spouses and kids. The "before" picture is of my son in 2014, checking out the kayak for the first time with my dad (side note: he did NOT actually go out in the kayak, they were on shore for the picture, which is why he has no life jacket on).

Fast forward eight years to this summer, when he was able to actually paddle the kayak around the lake all on his own. He had such a great time! They aren’t lying when they say the days are long but the years are short.

-Megan

Megan, I love everything about this! First, that you have such a fun tradition with your family. I used to go to a cabin on a lake with my family every year when I was little and we loved it. Also, I love the look on his face as a baby--he looked so delighted to be sitting there. How proud he must feel to be able to do that on his own now! I hope you guys keep up the tradition for years to come :)  -Katie

Thank you so much for sharing, Megan and Stacy! I appreciate your taking the time to do that. If anyone else has a transformation of any sort that you'd like to share, please send me an email! Include your name, a description of your transformation, a before photo and an after photo. You can send them to me at: katie (at) runsforcookies (dot) com.

Transformation Tuesday #81

Happy Transformation Tuesday! It's late as I sit down to write this, so I may not get it done in time. I was working on my own transformation for the last few hours--Eli's bedroom. I didn't do anything big; I just couldn't stand to look at how messy it was and how it smelled like dog (Joey spends his time in there). There was dog hair everywhere and I don't know how he could stand to live like that!

So, while he went to the county fair with his girlfriend, I cleaned it the best I could without going through his personal stuff. It looks a million times better. (I won't post pictures because Eli hasn't even seen it yet and I don't know if he would want me to share pics.)

Anyway, here are a few readers' transformations today. There are a couple that I'm saving for next week, so if you sent me one and it's not here, then check next week.  Enjoy!

We built a lake house in Maine about 20 years ago when my kids were little. This spring and summer we decided it was time for a new dock. Twenty years ago we built a PT dock. We’d had enough of putting in and taking out the very heavy sections, so we invested in an aluminum dock with wheeled sections.

So easy to put in, and I love the chairs, table and bench we bought for it.  We also put a laminate countertop in when we built it, and although there was nothing wrong with it, the laminate looks cheap and cheesy. (No one is there if we aren’t, we don’t rent it out.) Love the new granite tops.  Also bought a new stainless steel stove; the existing stove came out of our last house when we replaced it with a commercial stove. It’s a great place to go in the summer and winter.

-Christine

Christine, what an adorable dock! It looks like the perfect place to sit and chat. And it's funny that the bird was posing in the "after" picture ;)  As far as the kitchen, wow--it looks so much brighter! I happen to like laminate countertops, so I don't think it looked bad at all, but your granite ones look so nice--and they definitely brighten up the room. I bet you're loving it!  -Katie

I come up with the ideas and my husband goes for it. This is a small transformation but even small ones make a difference and take time to do.  The first picture is the before picture -after killing the weeds and removing them. The second picture wood chips were added, the wood replaced on the bench and stepping stones added. Next, we may do the right side of the path.

-Kim

Christine, I love that dynamic--you come up with ideas and your husband does them. Sounds like a great idea to me! ;)  I cannot get over what a huge difference something as simple as mulch can make. And the new stone pathway and bench look great. I wouldn't call this a small transformation--it looks like a different space!  -Katie

This is sort of a reverse transformation. I moved out of my apartment at the end of my lease and into a new apartment my boyfriend. We kept most of his furniture and let go of most of mine. It was a lot of work (we moved everything ourselves), but you can see here we did it. Plus, I actually managed to sell everything in this room we were getting rid of!

(I was proud of how much money I made back by taking the time to sell things):

Bought the couch used for $350, sold for $300
Bought the coffee table used for $110, sold for $80
Bought the chair in the back right used for $75, sold for $20
Bought the TV stand new for $300, sold for $200
Bought the rug new for $150, sold for $50
Kept everything else
So made back $650/$985 (about 2/3) of the money I spent furnishing the place

-Emily

Emily, you know I'm a sucker for numbers and for thrifting, and I LOVE that you were able to sell everything! I absolutely would have bought a couple of things in the room--it looked great. Thanks for including the numbers--it's so interesting to me. I hope that you enjoy your new place with your boyfriend :)  -Katie

Thank you so much for sending in the transformations! It was fun to see four totally different transformation photos. If anyone has a transformation to share, no matter how insignificant you may think it is, please send it to me so I can post it on a future Transformation Tuesday! Just send a before photo and an after photo to me at: katie (at) runsforcookies (dot) com. Please include your name and a description of your transformation. Looking forward to seeing what you've got! :)

Transformation Tuesday #80: An Update on Gilda

Happy Transformation Tuesday! Like I did a few weeks ago, I posted a single transformation of a cat adoption that didn't seem like it would work out, but it had a very happy ending. You can find that story here.

Today is going to be a similar post--more like a guest post than a typical Transformation Tuesday. This transformation is pretty long and I like to keep editing to a minimum when I can, so I chose to do this in a post by itself.

This is another heartwarming cat-adoption story, and it's actually a continuation from a previous Transformation Tuesday. So it's more of an update from the post on June 8, 2021. You can find that story here. This is about Gilda, the cat who was bounced from shelter to shelter and very clearly needed a permanent home. Runs for Cookies' reader Michelle adopted Gilda and worked hard with her to help her be a happy and healthy cat. This is the update on Gilda and how she's been doing in her new home. You can find more pictures there, too.

I'm going to turn it over to Michelle, who will continue Gilda's story...

A quick recap: The short summary is that it was difficult to find a cat to adopt during the pandemic, but after several months I found one that according to the shelter needed a bit of "work," which was kind of short-hand for a cat that had been sad, scared, angry, not good with change and needed some special attention. She was a bit over a year old when I adopted her, an owner-surrender with an unfortunate name she didn't respond to at all, so I named her Gilda.

Gilda and I spent lots of time getting to know each other, going at her pace. I can't believe it's been 14 months since I first got her, and my life is so much better with her in it.

Things about Gilda: She likes food--okay, LOVES food--especially kibble, but also a prescription wet food that can best be described as sticky-brown-smelly-sludgy-wallpaper-paste. (It's so gross but she loves it and it's a prescription she needs). Gilda gained nearly three pounds (almost 40% of her original body weight!) in the first six months I had her, before I got a handle on her ideal weight and how much I should be feeding her. She's back down to a healthy weight but would definitely be a very large (unhealthy) cat if I gave her unlimited access to food.

Gilda likes to sit near me, most often touching me, but she is not and may never be a lap cat. She loves to give me head-butts, and rub her cheeks on my glasses and my nose. When she's begging for dinner, she'll sit silently beside me with a thousand-yard stare, and then put one paw on my shoulder, very gently--it's so sweet. If I don't react to that, she bops my nose with her paw (yes I am a sucker.)

Gilda is *still* terrified of towels, but I've made progress with her fear of paper bags (I thought all cats loved paper bags!). I set up a giant paper bag meant for lawn waste in my living room, and cut a door/window in the end and she likes that well enough.

She ADORES something called Da Bird (which I highly recommend)-- basically a wand toy with feathers on the end that kind of "fly" when you use it-- it's pretty realistic. When she "catches" the bird in her mouth, she prances around proudly, dragging the wand behind her. (Katie here: I have to agree--my cats LOVE that toy! You can find it on Amazon here (affiliate link)).

Gilda has a *wide* ranging vocabulary from little beeps to sweet soft squeaks when she's trying to butter me up so she can have more food. She makes a crazy yodeling noise when running around at night (or, um, during the day) and can project extremely loud obnoxious meows when I'm not getting her dinner ready fast enough.

Other things that have happened over the past year: Gilda and I navigated getting her to take anti-anxiety medicine so that I could put her in her carrier and take her to the vet for a checkup. The staff there *adored* her--she was well behaved (and acted kinda drunk)--and she was pronounced pretty healthy. She was also VERY happy to come back home with me.

It was good that we had a successful first vet visit because we've had to return a few times--poor Gilda has some skin issues that were alarming. She'd scratch herself absolutely raw and cause large open wounds. I've learned that skin issues can be tricky to treat, but after about five months of a special diet/allergy challenge, we found out she's allergic to dairy and fish.

I learned that dairy and fish is in just about *everything* for pets, even things not fish-flavored and even some 100% freeze dried chicken, if it's been prepared on the same machinery as fish)...sigh. the good news is that I've found a mixture of prescription food plus one other chicken/turkey only brand that she LOVES and help about 80%. Of course, she also has some seasonal allergies that cause her to itch, so I have to keep a close eye on her, but I think we're at a place that we can both live with.

As for socialization, Gilda has come to really like my (elderly) mom and dad, who occasionally take care of her if I need to be out of town--I'm lucky they live close by. Gilda has also met my sister and niece and done well, and really adores another good friend of mine who we see regularly--but she still growls when she hears one of my neighbors opening their back door (I live in a small condo complex), etc.

Lastly, she's mastered "high five" when she wants a treat (the treat is just a piece of kibble, but she likes it as much as a treat), as well as "sit" and "up" which is when she gets on her hind legs.

I've been very inspired by a YouTube channel called Billi Speaks. During the early days of the pandemic, a veterinarian in Florida decided to teach her 12-year old cat to "speak" by using buttons--and BOY does Billi speak--her first word was MAD and if you're a pet person and watch it, you'll be impressed (and will laugh lots).

This kind of training has been done with dogs, and I'm a bit obsessed with the idea of it, but the buttons are a bit expensive--as is her prescription food--I think she eats better than I do! So I don't see myself tackling this project any time soon.

Please enjoy the before and after photos-- and I appreciate you hearing more than you probably want about Gilda.

Have I mentioned I adore her?? ;)

P.S. Thanks to Katie (and Duck), I make 100% sure that any string/yarn I have is well-secured in a closet Gilda can't get into, and if I need to do a project--such as repairing a sweater, etc.--I'm very very mindful of everything!

Katie here... I am SO SO happy to hear that Gilda is thriving! She seems like she's come such a long way since last year. I was thrilled that you chose to adopt her and that now she has a forever home with someone who adores her :)  I am absolutely sure that Gilda is grateful for your patience and she'll reward you with lots of love. Please give her a high-five from me! Thank you so much for sharing the update <3

Transformation Tuesday #79

Well, I think I finally caught up on sleep! I tend to go weeks and weeks without sleeping more than 2-3 hours a night and then one day, I'll sleep like a rock for a LONG time. Last night, I was in bed at 7:45 (yes, for real!) and then I didn't wake up until 6:30. So, I should be good on sleep for a while. Yay!

Thank you so much for those of you that submitted your Transformation Tuesdays photos! I mistakenly thought Sunday was Monday and I sent a reminder on Sunday. Either way, I am happy to have some posts to share!

Here goes...

A couple of years ago I had made a blanket for my husband’s cousin’s new baby.  We called it the “Bridget” blanket because we put her name on the top of it.  Well earlier this year her mom asked me if we could make a “Marilyn” blanket because Bridgets older sister Marilyn kept taking off with her blanket because she liked it so much. Marilyn loved her new blanket, so hopefully Bridget will be able to keep her blanket from now on lol.

-Katie

Katie, it looks fantastic! What an amazing and thoughtful gift. Someone gifted me a knitted blanket for Noah with his name on it and I loved it. I'm sure you put a ton of work into it and it definitely shows! The colors look great together. Thanks for sharing!  -Katie

I decided to get rid of the patio table and chairs we had--we rarely ate outside, so I gave the set to my brother and we got this cute settee set. My husband stained the deck and put the furniture together and I styled our new outdoor space with pillows, foot rest poufs, and plants. I also installed Edison lights to plug in when it gets dark--just to make the space bright. Looking forward to spending some time on the deck reading!

-Lorri O’Dell, Syracuse NY

Lorri, oh my gosh--the first thing that caught my eye was the stain on the deck. I am SO overwhelmed at the thought of staining ours, which needs it badly, but yours looks amazing. The second thing that caught my eye were the foot rest poofs (which I would totally use to sit cross-legged on, haha). I've never seen those before--so cute! What a huge difference; I bet you're going to love reading out there this summer :)  -Katie

Not a huge transformation… I tore out the carpet and stained the hardwood floor on the inside of my closet. The color looks a bit red in the picture, but it’s not that over the top. We’re getting new carpet in the rest of the master and I wanted to get that taken care of! I had to wood fill around an odd strip/piece of wood, and I think it’s fine for being on the inside of a closet.

Sarah

Sarah, that is not a small transformation at all--it looks great! Even thought it's "just a closet", it always helps when we feel good about our own space. Getting new carpet in the master bedroom will be fun! Walking around on new carpet is heavenly :)  -Katie

I have wanted to get the exterior of our house painted since the day we bought it, and we were finally able to get it done. I hired a painting contractor in March and his schedule was full for 2 months. Then, it rained for 6 weeks about every other day. We had to have a dry stretch. And just like that, it was summer and 100 degrees. I felt so bad for the painters, having to paint in the terrible heat, but that’s the way the cards fell. I knew all along I wanted a shade of blue, and intended on going with a “safe” blue. But when I saw a navy home on Pinterest I fell in love. I felt like the navy would play well with the little bit of red brick we had, and it’s a very colonial architecture. It was worth the money and the wait.

By the way, this is vinyl siding. We learned that every paint brand offers a vinyl safe formula, you just have to specifically ask for it.

Before: Sage Green
After: Benjamin Moore Hale Navy

Valerie, I'm stunned--what an amazing difference! The house looks so much more modern and welcoming. The bolder blue color choice was perfect. LOVE it!  -Katie

Thank you again for sharing your transformations! It's so much fun to see what you all can do. So please send me some more for next week. I have a SUPER busy weekend, so I won't be able to come up with any transformations on my own to share--and I'm relying on you! ;)  So just send a before photo and an after photo to me at: katie (at) runsforcookies (dot) com, and include your name and a description of your transformation. Can't wait to see what you have to share!

Transformation Tuesday #78

Happy Transformation Tuesday! Today's post is going to be a little different; a reader named Kristi sent me this transformation and while it's a long read (what isn't on my blog?!), I'd really like to share it because it's such a heart-warming story. So, this is kind of going to read like a guest post with lots of photos. I was going to try to edit it down in order to do my usual Transformation Tuesday post, but I gave up because the story just isn't the same without the details! So I hope you enjoy this transformation as much as I did :)

This is kind of a double transformation! I moved to Philadelphia in the fall of 2018 with no family nearby. I had always been a cat lover but hadn't lived with a pet since I moved out of my parents' house for college. I really wanted a companion but I wasn't planning to stay in Philly for more than a couple years and didn't think adopting would be a smart choice. So in the spring of 2019, I began fostering cats through a local rescue (phillypaws.org). I fostered a few cats:

Corrine - fat and feisty, loved to bite ankles

Alice the Truck Stop Waitress - the sweetest cat ever with very misleading RBF ("resting bitch face")

Draco - loved to sleep on my stomach at night, could jump from the floor to the top of the fridge

Guy - poor kitty had serious separation anxiety and was returned to me after being adopted once because he would cry all day while the owner was gone. He was adopted again by someone with another cat and is much happier with a companion. He would ride around the house on my shoulders and I wanted to adopt him so badly!

And, finally, Wacko! (Please excuse my laundry)

I picked up Wacko in May of 2020. He had just been returned to the shelter because he was peeing outside the litter box and because his medical complications were more extensive than the family could deal with. He had a cone because he had been fixed a few weeks prior but got a small infection in the incision.

His biggest complication was in his back legs. He had pretty severe arthritis that had led to the legs deteriorating. He was pretty skinny overall, but his back legs had almost no muscle mass. I gave him oral medicine for his infection and weekly gave him pain shots in his back legs. We also did some physical therapy exercises together to strengthen his legs which included lots of standing and jumping for treats.

After several weeks, we went to the vet and they said he was doing very well and just keep up the playing! He loves to run and jump and play now--almost too much to keep up with! His legs are almost completely normal but he has some quirks.

He had to learn how to jump with his front legs when his back legs were weak and he still uses them to jump then pull himself up into objects. He also lacks the typical cat ability to always land on his feet. He's very adventurous, so he often falls. And when he wants to scratch his ear, he doesn't know how to make his foot move to scratch. He will just stick his leg straight out, put his ear to it, and move his head up and down. He's very adventurous despite his limitations and really lives up to his name.

In the fall of 2020 I got engaged! My fiancé and I made plans to move in together and that life-change, along with the pandemic and a job offer, meant I was staying in Philly for a little while longer. I decided I was interested in adopting Wacko--how could I give him to someone else after what we'd been through?!

The complicating factor was that my fiancé had a dog. Leila is a pitbull and lab mix and is the sweetest dog ever! But she had no good experiences with cats and had been aggressive with other dogs in the past when she felt her food was threatened.

I told the shelter I was interested in adopting but asked if they could give me time to see if it was possible for Leila and Wacko to live together. We tried a couple initial meetings, through a closed door and then a baby gate. The meetings did not go very well. Leila was super excited and very alert to the small creature on the other side. Wacko was scared and not afraid to fight.

I agonized over what the right decision was for a couple weeks. I really didn't want to put either of them in a position where they weren't able to live their best life. Finally, I decided to make the leap and adopt--but I was still really unsure how it would turn out.

We moved in at the beginning of December 2020 but, due to some pandemic complications, Wacko had to stay with my former housemates until almost the end of the month. When we finally moved him in, Wacko got his own room.

We started slowly introducing them again. We started with the door closed. My fiancé and I would play with each of them and feed them on either side of the door so they got used to each other's presence. Then we used a baby gate and opened the door just a crack and slowly wider and wider over several days. Leila would still get really excited and sometimes frustrated that she was being held back.

Wacko eventually got more and more curious and would stick his arm through the holes to play and swat at her. Eventually we would let Wacko roam for a few minutes while Leila was sitting on the couch with us. That way she was in a relaxed position but we could easily hold her back if she wanted to lunge.

At some point we got stuck for a while with no progress. Life got busy and we slacked off on their training. Eventually, my fiancé said "we may have to accept that this isn't going to work, we should consider whether it's better for Wacko to go to another family." That hurt to hear, but he was right. Wacko was spending too much time closed off in one room for such an active, energetic kitty.

That reality check woke me up and I doubled down on the training, determined not to have to return him.

We all spent time together every day, getting just a little more exposure each time. I would sit in a doorway with each of them loose on either side of me and give them treats and love. We slowly taught Leila not to get fixated on him and to come to us for pets and cuddles instead. Eventually we were able to let them roam free with supervision. Then one day we went for a quick run to the store and left them alone together. I was so nervous for that 20 minutes but they were perfect angels!

Mid-training, some of their first treats together without a barrier:

Leila and Wacko are now best friends! They've (mostly) learned each other's boundaries. Leila gets extra protective and grumpy at night so we don't leave them alone together after dark. And Leila is still possessive about food so we have to keep a watchful eye if we eat dinner on the couch.

But she's not too protective about her own food--Wacko loves to sneak bites of her kibble. Sometimes she'll shoo him away but most of the time she doesn't care. We moved to a new house a month ago and had some regression for a couple days as they adjusted to the new space, but now they're even closer than they were before. They nap together all day on the bed across from my now-husband's office. (We got married in April!)

Wacko is a bit of a bully sometimes but Leila just turns her head or nudges him away. He tries to get her to chase him by sprinting up to her, rubbing on her, then sprinting away.

My heart is so happy every time I see them lying next to each other or being really sweet to each other. There were several times I thought it may not work out but I'm so glad it did! This transformation is one of the things I'm most proud of in my life right now.

Kristi, I absolutely LOVE this story! Jerry and I nearly died laughing when I read that Wacko doesn't know how to scratch his ears with his hind legs, so he rubs his head against his foot. That's so sad and cute at the same time! I am so happy that you were a foster mom to cats who needed you and that Wacko has found so much happiness in his new home. You guys are such great and patient pet-parents! Thank you for taking such good care of him <3  -Katie
