My thoughts about being a guest on The Dr. Oz Show

Sorry to bombard you with posts today! So much stuff going on. I just wanted to comment on a few things and post the pictures that the producer sent me as soon as the show aired.

First, I never said I didn't like NYC!  I barely saw the city because I was so busy. The only encounters I had with people were the taxi drivers (who were extremely rude if they didn't want to drive where you wanted to go) and the people at the restaurant when I ordered food. I guess I didn't mean everyone was rude, I just meant that I'm from a super small town where everybody waves hello to each other on the street and people know who you are when you say your last name and where you graduated high school from. My experience with NYC was--well, the total opposite of that. I would definitely like to go back some day when I have more time!

The producers didn't make me say anything I didn't feel comfortable with. They interviewed me a lot through the week, and took little tidbits of things I said and wrote the show. They just had me repeat the things they wanted me to mention. In fact, there was one thing they asked me to read in that little narrative that wasn't true, so I pointed it out and they changed it--no questions asked. They kept saying that there are no right or wrong answers--I'm just telling my story. The producers were fantastic!

I'm definitely bummed that a lot of the show was edited out, but if they left everything in, the show would be two hours long. It wasn't just MY part that was edited--Jennie had some stuff that was cut too.  I was so completely amazed at how much WORK the producers do for each show. To top it off, as soon as the show aired, Ali e-mailed me the pictures from the show... I was excited that I didn't have to wait forever to get them.

Yes, the red dresses were ugly. I'm glad I made the choice I did to wear the dress I brought with me. The producers agreed that the blue dress was more flattering and said it was my choice--thankfully! They had the idea to add the little black belt and the necklace, which I liked. The Lucky stylist chose the shoes--wish I could have kept them!

I felt guilty that Dr. Oz said I was 125 pounds lighter--because I'm only 110 pounds lighter today. I was completely honest with the producers, but it must have gotten confusing along the way. I just don't want anyone to think I was lying and still claiming to be 128 pounds!

Anyway, here are my "after" photos--after 25 months in the making :)

  1. I am so glad that you had such a wonderful experience! And WTF on the red dress? It just wasn't flattering. And any good stylist will work with you and not make you wear something that you are uncomfortable in. Glad you stuck to your guns and wore the blue dress.

And so what if you aren't the lowest weight - you have still kept off an amazing amount of weight and should be very proud of that!

I love reading your blog - you make me laugh and you inspire me :). Hope the healing is going well. I can't wait to get to that point on my journey!

  3. Katie you looked amazing, sounded amazing, were amazing and everything in between. I had a grin on my face your entire segment. You did perfectly. I am bummed that some of your stuff got cut...stupid time restrictions! We are all so proud of you. You are awesome!

Again, you are such an inspiration to me :) Loved the blue dress and wish they would have let you keep those rockin shoes! Best of luck with your recovery. Also, thanks so much for being so generous with posting your thoughts, musings, advice and successes on bot spark and your blog. I hope you realize that putting yourself out there really made a huge difference to me!

  10. I love getting to read 3 posts in one day!!

I am glad to know the show was edited. I almost had a heart attack when I thought I missed some of it.

You did a fabulous job!! I think it is just the fact that we (you and your readers)aren't familiar with how tv land works.

This is sad, but true - my husband asked me to pick up my kids at 4:00 and I was like, "Are you kidding me? I have been waiting all week to watch this show! I have to watch SlimKatie!" I had my mother in law bring them over to me instead. Then when my daughter got home I said, "Someone I *know* is on tv!"

  11. As long as you're happy with your experience then it doesn't matter what we think! You must have felt like "Queen for a Day!" There was only 5 or 6 people showcased on the 400th show and YOU WERE ONE OF THEM!!! Congratulations! So happy for you Katie!

  13. What an experience! So fun to see it and then get to read about it all from the person herself! I feel like I "know" a celebrity now. You looked amazing and you sounded amazing and you WERE amazing! I thought the narration at the beginning while they showed your pictures was great. You have a great voice. I suppose it sounds funny to you cause you are usually hearing it from inside your own head. But believe me, you sounded fantastic and very professional. I didn't get time to watch the whole show, just fast forwarded to your part. I'm going to watch it all tomorrow. I LOVE weight loss/make-over type shows, cause they're so inspiring. I bet you inspired tons of people today. You inspire me everyday Katie! And now you're a STAR!

  14. Wow! Three posts to read in one day!!!! It is my lucky day!!!!!!
I had to record the Dr. Oz Show because I was doing a 5K race in GR last night. It was through the Holiday Lights around 5/3 Ballpark (one of the minor leagues for the Tigers) and it was a lot of fun!!!! I even placed 2nd for my age group and I have NEVER won anything in a race before!!!!
I love the pictures, shoes, and the blue dress!!!!!!
In the pictures, you reminded me a little of Rachel Ray, before I zoomed in!!!!! You looked great!!!!!!!
Thank you so much for sharing all with us!!!!

  15. I wasn't able to watch the show. I don't have NBC! But I've been following you for quite a while, and from what I've read, it seems like they missed how absolutely amazing you are. Your blog, video, pictures are my inspiration every day. I never considered myself a binger until I read your story. When I feel a binge coming on I pull up your youtube video and dance to the background. I wish the show would have shared this blog with the viewers, because it has changed my life.

Is there any way you can post the show on here for those of us who couldn't watch?

  17. You look fantastic! What an amazing experience. I wish they hadn't edited so much out, but I understand why they had to.

  18. Katie,
Thanks for your positive comments on my blog today. I guess I had unrealistic hopes that someday it would get easy. I don't think that's going to happen.
I forgot to mention how I loved it when you were on Dr. Oz, and talked about how you enjoy being a "girl" again. When we get fat, we quit caring how we look. Oh I stayed clean, but I didn't wear make-up and spent no time on my hair, letting it grow long, straggly and gray. Now I have my nails done and keep my hair colored and styled. I wear make-up every day and OMG--the clothes I have bought! I'm broke from buying so many but it is such joy to go to stores, try stuff on and have it fit and look decent, so I can't stop. You are so right--it's fun feeling feminine again!

  19. I LOVED the show! I understand that they had to cut some of the show but I wish you could have been on longer. My 10 year old daughter was watching it with me and she kept saying, "oh my gosh mom, I can't believe your friend knows Dr. Oz!" It was funny, I tried to explain that even though I "know" you, we haven't met and that you don't live around here but it didn't matter to her, she was stoked! LOL! I didn't get to read comments on your show posts but I hope people weren't giving you grief about your experience while you were there or how you saw things. Some people take things too personally! Anyway, I am so glad you got your after picture with Dr. Oz and I want you to know that I am thankful for your "friendship" even if it's just online, it means a lot to me that you share your days, your family and experiences. When I read your blog I feel as if I'm catching up with an old friend and I appreciate the humor! I hope you are feeling better! Take care : )

  20. I totally understand how you feel and what a great experience!! I'm so glad they were listening to your input and let you have the ultimate deciding factor in most of it. I def was only kidding when I said not everyone in NYC is rude! lol Hope you didn't take me seriously!! I was just SO happy to be able to see you on tv since we haven't really met - but hopefully one day we will be able to at a race perhaps!! :) Hope you're resting well today!

  21. I wouldn't worry about the 125 - 110 thing...those things happen. :) You did great and i wish they would have shown more too. There was a lot they jammed in the show. To bad you couldn't get a copy of the whole thing. Anyway, you did great!

  22. Beautiful pics, once in a life time experience! I was a bit teary-eyed when I watched you on TV, your story truly speaks to people struggling with their weight, you're such an inspiration! :)

  23. Holy cow, Katie! You are too cute. I can't believe all of this. I am so far behind in reading my blogs and I come to your blog to see you have had your surgery AND appeared on Dr. Oz in my short time away. Now I have to hunt down this episode and watch it, I'm so excited. You looked fabulous and I love how you stay so true to yourself.

  24. Katie, this is an amazing story!! Thank you so much for taking the time to take all those notes and write it all out. You are an amazing woman and your story is just phenomenal! I really enjoyed reading through all this...congratulations to you on this VERY well-deserved recognition!!

  25. Thanks for sharing your story. I'm looking for motivation. The shoes: If I'm ever on TV for any reason, I hope the fad for stiletto heels has passed, because I would have to snap those little sticks right off before I wore them, and that might make the stylist feel frustrated!

  26. You look so good! I just found your blog today, and have been reading it for two hours nonstop. I'm trying to lose weight post baby, and seeing your success has been very motivating. Thank you for sharing your story!

I used to publish ALL comments (even the mean ones) but I recently chose not to publish those. I always welcome constructive comments/criticism, but there is no need for unnecessary rudeness/hate. But please--I love reading what you have to say! (This comment form is super finicky, so I apologize if you're unable to comment)
