Friday Night Photos

AHHHH! I wrote this post yesterday and completely forgot to click "Publish". I'm bummed. But here it is, anyway!

Today, October 1st, marks National Black Dog Day:

"National Black Dog Day on October 1st encourages the adoption of a dog in the darker shades. Black dogs are less likely to be adopted for no other reason than their coloring. Regardless of behavior, size, breeding, personality, or age, the phenomenon persists. You’ll find their behavior is no different from dogs of a different color." (source)

As you know, we wanted to adopt a black dog (and cats) because they are hard to adopt out--and that's so sad! We left the animal shelter with Joey, an 18-month old black lab/chow chow mix. We had no idea just what an amazing member of our family he would become!

In honor of National Black Dog Day, I'm just going to post a bunch of my favorite pictures of Joey through the last six years ;)

This last photo is from the day we adopted him :)

I know I'm always preaching about adopting pets from shelters or rescues, but Joey would like you to also consider getting a black pet. Just look how handsome he is!

  1. Such fantastic photos. I love the one where he's rounding the turn in full sprint. Beautiful shot. Thanks for sharing. He's adorable 😍

  3. We have an all black dog ourselves, Delilah! We actually lost her the first night home because she laid in a dark corner. She has worn a bright pink collar since then. I agree people look at black dogs like they are dangerous and most our lovable wimps. My 5lb fluffy tan mutt is more likely to try to attack than my 50 lb black mix... unless you are 10 year old girl shoe.

  4. Love these photos of Joey - he is a beautiful dog and is living his best life! I also have a black dog (lab/pyrenees mix) and she is the best.

  5. Sure brings back memories of Rita. He looks just like her. When we talk about her, we talk about all the fun times and what an awesome, long life she had. Please keep spreading the word about pet adoption. The other day I met two people who rescued dogs, and we rescued more than once. You are a super sweet family, all of you.

  7. Joey's such a great dog and I'm so glad he's a member of your family! Admittedly, I got a little sentimental at the Joey-Chandler pic. I had forgotten that Phoebe was his original kitty buddy before Duck too. Thank you for sharing all these fabulous shots!

Thank you also for the shout-out about adopting and especially adopting a black dog. The spca where I volunteer had an on-site adoption event this past Thursday. It was the first time our shelter has been open to the public since lockdown -- all of our adoptions have been online since the pandemic began. We had 25 adoptions of dogs/puppies/cats/kittens in 4 hours -- YAY! Unfortunately, even though I showed her a couple of times and she is super-sweet, the one black dog at our facility wasn't adopted (she is 105 pounds, so that might be part of it, but still, she's LOVELY!💗).

I used to publish ALL comments (even the mean ones) but I recently chose not to publish those. I always welcome constructive comments/criticism, but there is no need for unnecessary rudeness/hate. But please--I love reading what you have to say! (This comment form is super finicky, so I apologize if you're unable to comment)
