I Can't Put It Down

I can't even tell you the last time I was super obsessed with a book to the point where I just couldn't stop reading. One where I would rather read than do anything else. I think it was probably when I read 'The Hunger Games'...? That was so long ago!

Anyway, I'm reading 'Where the Crawdads Sing' by Delia Owens (Amazon affiliate link). The book isn't new; it was published two years ago. I remember my sister texting me and telling me I just "HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK!" I read the synopsis and it wasn't very intriguing to me, but I requested the ebook from the library (there were something like 50+ holds on it, so I knew I wouldn't even get it for a long time).

Randomly one day, months or even a year later, it was automatically loaned to me from the library. I just wasn't in the reading mood then, so it was returned, unread. I decided to just buy it for my Kindle in order to avoid waiting again for the library. After buying it, however, I still just couldn't get in the mood to read it!

I even borrowed the audiobook but I couldn't concentrate on it. I tried listening several times and found myself daydreaming and not registering anything that I'd heard.

Why did I keep trying? I don't know. But after finishing the recent 'The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes' (Amazon affiliate link) from the Hunger Games series (a coincidence) I was in the mood to start a new book. I have several on my Kindle, so I was browsing through them when I came across 'Where the Crawdads Sing'. I decided I was going to finally just sit down and read it.

I couldn't even remember what it was about, and I'm kind of glad. From the synopsis, it doesn't sound like a typical book I'd be interested in, and going into it blindly this time, it grabbed my attention almost immediately. I have barely put it down since I started it.

It's no wonder that it has 4.8 out of 5.0 stars on Amazon with over 72,000 ratings! I am not finished, so I can't give it 5 stars just yet. I hope that the ending is as good as the rest of it!

Going to go read some more. It could be a late night ;)

  1. haha this was an amazing post for me to see!! I am currently reading it too (about 60 pages in) and feeling the exact same way! I usually can't read for long periods of time, or usually just stick to reading before bed, but I just keep finding excuses to just go read one more chapter!

    1. Awesome! I hope you like it as much as I did. I wasn't shocked at the ending, but I wasn't really expecting to be.

  2. I had this book in my hand yesterday at Barnes and Nobles because a few of my friends said I needed to read it too. After reading the synopsis I put it down and picked up The Nightingale. I'm really liking that one so far but now this makes me wish I would have bought both.

    1. The synopsis makes it sound very light and fluffy, which didn't interest me at all. But it would take a lot to really explain what it's about. I would give it a try!

  3. I'll have to put that one on my list. I had a goal this year to read 12 books! I've always loved reading but having two young children, I wasn't able to read as much as I used to. I've read 9 books so far (right on track to complete the goal)! I get a lot of books from Goodwill or Volunteers of America and one day I just picked up a book called The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey. It Was So Good!! It was almost 500 pages and I could not put it down! I found out that it was a series, 3 books, so yesterday I had to go out and buy the other two from Barnes & Noble, I paid a little more because I couldn't wait the two days from Amazon! I also loved the Hunger Games series so I really think you would like The 5th Wave!

    1. I used to read a LOT before having kids, but you're right--when they are young, it's hard to find time to read anything other than picture books ;)

I checked out The 5th Wave and I added it to my list--it sounds good!

  4. I'm not much of a romance novel reader, but I recently discovered Elin Hildebrand's books. I suppose technically they could be called romance novels, but they all take place on or near Nantucket Island in the summer, and I can't get enough of them. The endings are usually a surprise, which is cool, because what I hate about romance novels is that you can guess the ending immediately upon beginning the book. The good thing about Elin Hildebrand is there are over 20 novels in her repertoire, so I've got a bunch to read. And I too love my Kindle PaperWhite, because if I wake up in the middle of the night I can read, without turning on my lamp and thus do not wake up my hubs. The only bad thing is now I want to visit Nantucket, it seems so idyllic!!

    1. I know I read one of her books, although I can't remember what it was. One of hers is on Amazon's top list right now, so maybe I'll try that one out.

  5. Ok so I also read it recently and hated it. Some parts were nice but the sexual awakening stuff was so... I don’t know, like expected? That it just killed it for me. I found myself rolling my eyes a lot and then started skimming pages to just get it over with. :/

    1. Hahaha, I loved it! There is so much I didn't think about when it comes to a little girl living so secluded on her own. And it didn't play a huge role in the book, but I thought it was important! It sounds like the people who didn't like it have the same opinion as you, though. Thanks for sharing--I like hearing others' opinions on books!

  6. I think this book was one of Reese Witherspoon's book club books (or whatever it is she has), I too was going to read it but the synopsis didn't sound great so I never have. Now I should just buy it . . .

    1. Yes, it was on her list and several others. I couldn't believe the number of Amazon reviews. And it's been on Amazon's top 10 list for 103 weeks! I figured it had to be worth the read, and I'm so glad I gave it a try. It needs a better synopsis, because the one that is written does describe it well at all.

  7. I started reading it a few years ago, but I didn't get far. The portrayal of Black people was just such a gross stereotype, it made me want to burn it more than read it. Then I came across an article about the author's involvement in a murder in Africa, and her total disdain for the people native to that place. I hope this author and others like her never get to publish again.

    1. Interesting! I haven't read anything about the author. (I rarely do, unless I'm reading a memoir.) Thanks for sharing that! I'll have to look it up.

I used to publish ALL comments (even the mean ones) but I recently chose not to publish those. I always welcome constructive comments/criticism, but there is no need for unnecessary rudeness/hate. But please--I love reading what you have to say! (This comment form is super finicky, so I apologize if you're unable to comment)
