April Fool's Day

I've always hated April Fool's Day! I fall for all of the stupid online pranks. Today, for example, there were several companies making "announcements", and then once I read the comments, I realized they were fake. But I always fall for it!

My sister has always loved April Fool's Day, and she encouraged my kids (from the time they could WALK) to play pranks on Jerry and me. She gave them ideas, and we had to pretend to fall for the pranks. The kids thought it was a blast ;)

I will never forget April Fool's Day in 2010...

When I went to pick up Eli from preschool, he was very upset. He told me that he got in trouble at school, but he "didn't do anything wrong". So when I asked his teacher, she told me what had happened.

Eli in March 2010... so sweet!

The kids (four year olds) were all in line in the cafeteria to get their lunches, when suddenly Eli collapsed to the ground. He was on his back, totally still. His teacher asked him if he was okay, and there was no response. She asked again, and still no response. She was really starting to panic at this point, and she went over to check on him. She got down next to him, trying to figure out what was wrong, when Eli opened his eyes and said, "April Fools!"

His teacher didn't find it funny at all (and who could blame her?), but Eli was really upset that his "joke" wasn't funny. (I was having a hard time even believing that a four-year old could come up with a trick like that! haha). I actually felt really bad for him, because he didn't understand why it was wrong; he just played a trick on April Fool's Day, and that was all he knew. But anyway, every April first, I think of that story! ;)

Today, I had three miles on the schedule. My legs are so sore! It's my calves and my shins--they don't feel injured, but just that normal soreness when you haven't exercised in a long time. Except I have. So I have no idea why they are so sore!

I took Joey with me, but he was really wound up today, and it was hard to run with him. We didn't go to the park, but ran near my house instead, which made it more difficult. I had to make him heel while we ran on a highly trafficked road. Then, he kept darting after squirrels and birds. My lower legs were so sore that I just was not in the mood to deal with it, so after a half-mile, I turned around and we ran home, where I dropped him off. All I wanted was to run a slow, easy pace, and to zone out.

After I dropped him off, my mind was much more relaxed. My body was still really feeling beat up, though. I ran slowly, and tried to focus on having good form. I finished my three miles, but it was really difficult. Yesterday's run was much easier, even though my pace was a lot faster!

I'm going to keep this super short, because I'm really not feeling good tonight. Anyone play any fun tricks for April Fool's Day? Or get fooled by someone else? ;)

  1. Did you try using "The Stick" on your calves? I think you have written about owning one. They are amazing. Or else a foam roller?

    Good luck!

I dread the day my daughter learns about April Fool's Day. It sounds like a lot of work.

  2. Hi Katie

I'm with you.. I've always HATED April Fool's Day ! Growing up with 2 brothers... it was always something on this day... So far today, I've made it with no pranks : )

Last week, I had a major cramp in my left calf while running...or so I thought. Came home- iced it ...loaded up on banana's for a few day and still- over a week later it's tight... and some pain when I finally tried to run on it again today.

UGH !! Maybe I ripped something...back to resting I go.

Be well ... and restful. After years of nursing injuries, I've learned to listen to ouchy body parts.

  4. Katie...I'm trying to lose about 60 lbs (again) and I want to transition from walking at 4.0 mph at a 4% incline to running. I've tried the C25K program in the past and did not like it. I used to run but for some reason it's harder to get started this time around. How did you transition or what would you recommend?

  5. Aww Eli was so cute! Poor thing haha. I personally don't enjoy April Fool's either. Possibly as a kid it was because I could never fool anyone! I've always been super honest, so don't really find the act of deceiving people very fun. But I don't mind being the fool sometimes :P Hope your leg feels better soon!

  6. I'm not a fan of April Fool's, either, but I did laugh at Eli's trick! Very clever for a 4-year old!

How old are your shoes? I notice that my calves and shins start getting more sore than normal when the mileage is getting up there on my current pair of shoes. Maybe a pair of compression knee-high socks would help? Otherwise I just foam roll and try to stretch more. Hope they're feeling better soon!

  7. I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates April Fools Day. I especially hate when websites or bloggers jump on board because when I get to the bottom and find out it was a prank, I get irritated that I wasted my time.

I don't know if you have those footless compression sleeves or not but those really help me (and I don't even run). Ones I see recommended all the time are the SKINS Unisex Essentials Compression MX Calf Tight. 4 1/2 stars on Amazon. :-)

  8. Hi Katie,
I had exactly the same problem with my calves a couple weeks ago - no idea why I was so achy suddenly, as I hadn't changed my running habits... My massage therapist told me it was toxins accumulating in the tissues, so she rubbed my whole legs in a slow outward motion (from the top of the thigh to the foot) for 20 minutes. It worked miracles! I
Maybe you can get a medical massage somewhere (I don't know how much that costs where you live, here in Switzerland it's a bit expensive) or get Jerry to do it for you...
    Good luck!
And congratulations on your blog, I discovered it a few months ago and love it :)

  9. Brainstorming here...do you think running with Joey is changing your stride at all (possibly leading to soreness w/ muscles worked in a different way)? Or maybe it's your shoes, I know you switched brands but I don't recall if you'd been running in them long before your injury. Do you foam roll? Some people think it's dumb but honestly I feel like it is perfect for that type of soreness.

Eli's joke is such an adorable story for you to have and tell all his life. It's so interesting to think about perspective of a child vs. an adult.

  10. Aww, Eli is so cute! A girl in our youth group at my church told me she'd cut her hair and donated it to Locks of Love but she hated how it looked, and I totally believed her. When she got to church, she even had a toboggan on because she was "nervous" to show it to everyone. Nope, I just got pranked. ;)

  11. You might want to go get your calves & the tightness checked out by your doc. It could be some underlying illness. I know, not what you are wanting to hear. But, better be safe than sorry.
Eli's joke made me laugh out loud this morning at my desk. I loved it!!

  12. As kids we used to switch the spot of the forks and spoons in the silverware drawer for April Fool's Day. We though we were so clever. I remember doing it for several years. My sweet mother must have pretended it was inventive and fun every time.

A bit unrelated to your post, I am committing in writing here to get back to tracking points every day. I know it works, and I know not doing it has the opposite effect. Should be simple, eh? Thanks for the inspiration!

  13. When I was a kid, we used to hide a plastic spider in my dad's jacket or briefcase. We thought we were so funny, and he'd act surprised every year. Nowadays, I don't like getting pranked or surprised. It was so much fun when I was a kid, though.

  14. My suggestion is to check your electrolytes/blood chemistry with a blood panel. Several electrolytes have symptoms like that when they get out of balance - both sodium and potassium are that way. It's an easy fix, and not necessarily the first one you'd think of, but if stretching, foam rolling, massaging it, etc aren't working, I'd go ask for a blood panel to be run (it's just a complete metabolic panel).
Hopefully you'll be feeling better soon!!

  15. I think it's the dog walking and running. You are using different muscles and requiring different things of your muscles when walking a dog-in-training than you would by running by yourself in balance.

  16. My boyfriend had recently moved in with me and on April Fool's Day I woke up and went to go downstairs and my foot slipped out from under me and I fell head first down 12 steps. My boyfriend totally thought I was screwing with him/playing an April Fool's joke until he heard me obviously in pain. He went into paramedic mode right away and it was super sweet.

  17. OMG! I'm catching up on your blog after 2 weeks of travel. Eli is hilarious! That is so funny. I can imagine the teacher not being impressed, but it's still totally funny!

I used to publish ALL comments (even the mean ones) but I recently chose not to publish those. I always welcome constructive comments/criticism, but there is no need for unnecessary rudeness/hate. But please--I love reading what you have to say! (This comment form is super finicky, so I apologize if you're unable to comment)
