Lunch with the family

This cold I have is driving me crazy. The hearing in my left ear is really muffled, which bothers me more than the congestion and sore throat. It really started to bother me yesterday afternoon, on the way home from La Pita.

Lunch at La Pita was fun! Jerry, the kids, and I went, along with my parents, my sister and her husband, and my older brother and his fiancé. It would have been perfect if my little brother was able to make it, but we couldn't get a hold of him. I was a little nervous about eating out while on Simply Filling, because you never really know how things are prepared. So I ordered my favorite meal there--the chicken kabob, which comes with rice pilaf, hummus, salad, and garlic sauce (I subbed baba ghanoush for the hummus).

I counted the chicken and salad as Simply Filling (0 PP--even if they used a little oil, I can use 2 tsp. of oil a day without counting it). I ate half the baba ghanoush, and skipped the rice and garlic sauce. I also had a small pita bread. I felt satisfied when I was done, and not super full, like I usually feel when I leave there, so I'm happy with how I did.

Almost as soon as I was done eating, though, I got a pounding headache. My throat was really sore, too. The whole way home, I was feeling pretty miserable, and couldn't wait to get into some comfy clothes and lie down. I could really use a decongestant, but I hate taking them, because they make me super jittery. So I just took ibuprofen for my sore throat, and that actually helped me a lot last night.

Yesterday was the first day since starting Simply Filling that I really had the munchies. I kept going back and fourth from the fridge to the pantry, looking for something to snack on, even though I wasn't hungry. I kept it under control though, and I'm glad. Yesterday's food log:

Breakfast: Peppermint Patty protein shake
Snack: cottage cheese with peaches (and string cheese, not pictured)
Lunch: La Pita chicken kabob and salad; baba ghanoush (4 PP), pita (3 PP)
Snack: granola bar (3 PP) and an orange (not pictured)
Dinner: oatmeal with cinnamon raisin peanut butter (5 PP)
Snack: popcorn and beer (2 PP)

Today, I spent most of the day in my pajamas reading my book. I thought about skipping my run, but my cold isn't in my chest at all, so I knew there was no real reason to skip it. (As a general rule of thumb, I'll still run if the cold is from the neck up, but if it moves to my chest, then I'll rest).

I had a three-mile tempo run on the schedule. The roads are still totally covered in snow and ice, so there was no way I could run for speed outside. I just decided to do the treadmill. Surprisingly, it didn't feel too difficult today, even with my head cold. I managed a sub-8:00 pace for the whole run.

Now, if only it felt that good outside ;)

Today's eats:

Breakfast: oatmeal with Justin's Maple Almond Butter (6 PP)
Lunch: grilled turkey and cheese sandwich and an orange
Snack: single serving bag of Twizzlers Nibs (6 PP) and a latte
Dinner: mahi mahi, peas, and a baked potato
Snack: beer (2 PP) and popcorn

Today is the last day of my first week on Simply Filling, so we'll see what the scale says tomorrow. I used all of my weekly PointsPlus and all of my activity PP. I didn't do any bites, licks, or tastes of things and not count them. I followed the plan the best that I could, so hopefully I get good results, because I REALLY like the plan so far!

Thank you for the continuous comments, well wishes, and prayers for Mark! I am so excited to go check the PO Box and bring him the cards. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to wait until I kick this cold, though, because I wouldn't want him to get sick.

  1. Your food for the last two days looks delicious. It must be time for my breakfast cause I'm getting hungry. Do you eat immediately upon getting up in the morning or do you wait until after your run? I usually wait a little bit, depending upon what time I get up! I think you've said before, but they always say, "Your mind is the first to go when you get old!" So I've forgotten.

I picked up a card for Mark yesterday and will mail it today. I'm glad I'm not too late, I know when you even have a simple cold, it's best not to expose someone who is as ill as he is, to something like that, it could be life threatening. It's a wonderful thing you're doing! Thanks for caring Katie!!!

    1. I prefer to eat after a run, but during the winter, I tend to run later in the day, so I'll eat first. Usually, I put the kids on the bus, eat breakfast, and then run.

Thanks for getting a card for Mark! He's going to LOVE it. And it's never too late; I hope that he continues to get cards throughout his illness.

  2. What is that beer?! I've never seen that before. Is it good? I am kind of a beer brat and love full flavor beers and the super light ones usually don't taste that great. I'm curious to know how that one compares to others!

And you're food looks really good. I can't wait to see your results from your first week on SF!

    1. Labatt 52... and I'm guessing you probably wouldn't like it ;) I'm not a huge beer drinker, and when I do drink it, I like beers like Bud Light or Heineken Light. Jerry is a beer snob, and he calls my Labatt 52 "carbonated water", haha.

  3. Single serving size of Nibs?! I need that in my life, because I can eat a whole regular bag, for real. Why oh why are Nibs so much better than Twizzlers?

    1. I KNOW! I absolutely LOVE the Twizzlers Nibs, and can literally eat the entire 1-lb. bag by myself in a sitting. Jerry said they just got these single serving bags in the vending machine at work, so he brought one home for me.

  4. For a large part of 8th grade my right ear was plugged up. I think I got water or something in there, I don't really know, but I couldn't hear for shit. Of course I didn't really tell anybody though. Anyways, one day it "popped" and it was like I was a whole new person. So many sounds, haha!

Gotta agree with Jerry on the beer. ;) Although I suppose its a good beer if you don't really like beer because its got just that slight beer flavor. :P

    1. Jerry would be thrilled if I shared his interest in beer, but I'm just not a beer person. WINE, on the other hand... ;)

  5. Hope you're feeling better! When I was younger, I had so many ear infections with colds that, whenever I would get a cold, my ears would fill up and I wouldn't be able to hear. My mother told my first grade teacher that would happen when I got a cold, but the teacher didn't believe her . . . until I came down with a cold and the teacher spoke to me. I looked right at her and had no idea she was speaking to me - I couldn't hear her. This was well before the days of tubes in ears. She didn't doubt my mother after that. I still have the problem to this day. Misery!!

Also wanted to mention your love of grapes whenever you have a craving - I remember you saying last year (around this same time, I think) how helpful grapes were in curbing your cravings, but I haven't seen you mention them lately. Not sure where they would fit in with your eating plan . . . I would imagine 0 points.

Good luck - keep up the GREAT work!!

    1. The last few times I bought grapes, they haven't been very good :/ It's disappointing! But I've been eating a lot of oranges, lately :)

I used to publish ALL comments (even the mean ones) but I recently chose not to publish those. I always welcome constructive comments/criticism, but there is no need for unnecessary rudeness/hate. But please--I love reading what you have to say! (This comment form is super finicky, so I apologize if you're unable to comment)
