The "feels like" temp was a very toasty 10 degrees this morning, so I was looking forward to a pleasant run ;) Haha, honestly, though, I love running in the cold. I did underdress just a bit, though. I wore my Cold Gear tights, a long-sleeved tech shirt, a fleece jacket over it, my new furry ear warmer headband, and gloves.
In retrospect, I wish I'd have worn another layer over my running tights. My legs (and especially my butt--why is it that my butt is always the coldest part of me when I run?!) were cold even when I returned. I had three miles at an easy pace on the schedule, but I ended up doing four. We had plans of going out to dinner tonight, so I figured burning a few extra calories wouldn't hurt.
It definitely felt like 10 degrees out there! I did an out-and-back route, and just when I turned around, the sun came out. The sun really didn't do anything to warm me, but it at least looked warmer. I finished four miles at a pretty steady pace, and felt great!
A hot shower felt really good after that. I got to work cleaning up the house a little, because Noah had invited a friend over. Once his friend got here, the boys were SO loud. Jerry and I tried to have a conversation, but we couldn't even hear each other, so we ended up just sitting on the couch and reading all afternoon. I'm about three-quarters of the way through Gone Girl, and it took me a while to get into it... but once I got to the second half of the book, I was completely blown away by the major plot twist! I'm charging the Kindle right now while I type this, otherwise I'd probably still be reading ;)
Jerry and I took the boys to Red Robin for dinner. Noah was asking earlier this week if we could go out to dinner, and I suggested that instead of "Pizza Fridays", we could take turns choosing a place to go out to eat once a week. The kids really liked that idea, and today was Noah's turn to choose. He chose Red Robin. A burger didn't really sound very good to me, but I looked up their menu online and a bowl of clam chowder sounded awesome--probably because it's so cold outside today, and clam chowder is one of my favorite soups. It was 16 PointsPlus for a bowl of the soup and the garlic bread that came with it, which is more than I usually spend for dinner, but not by much.
I wish I could say it was worth it, but it wasn't at all. I wasn't expecting it to be mind-blowing, because Red Robin isn't exactly known for their clam chowder, but it was lukewarm and just not very tasty. I had planned on ordering fruit salad with it, but I was so cold that it didn't sound very good when we got there. I felt pretty chilled to the bone all day today! Can't wait to get under my electric blanket tonight :)

I just can't get warm today! I think the high was 0 here. I was a wimp and did an indoor workout.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's cold! Hope you had a good workout :)
DeleteI love soup in the winter! Sorry it was disappointing :(
ReplyDeleteI was never a big soup person until I started losing weight, and now I eat it all the time, even in the summer. I love soup!
DeleteI have a pair of winter running underwear, they are like boxer briefs with some leg (but they are womens). They have a lining in them. I got them at an end of season sale at the running store and they were still quite expensive but I do like them. They definitely keep my butt warmer! I only have the 1 pair and yes, sometimes I do wear them for more than one run without washing them!! (hey, I have to do what I have to do!!)
ReplyDeleteLove clam chowder! I can't remember the last time I had really good clam chowder.
I love that you admit to wearing them more than once without washing! Hahaha, once in a while I have to pull my running tights out of the hamper to wear them a second time, and I always feel gross doing that... but hey, we do what we have to ;)
DeleteWell it looks good in the picture at least!
ReplyDeleteNot at all worth the calories I wasted on it!
DeleteMy legs are always the coldest part for me, although my thighs and not my butt :). Just our body's way of keeping our core warm I guess.
ReplyDeleteI really liked Gone Girl. There were so many twists and turns, I stayed up all night to finish it when I read it last year. The ending was interesting for sure.
The book was great, but I was hugely disappointed in the ending. I wish it had ended any other way than it actually did.
DeleteI've never heard of Gone Girl. Of course between work, blogging, and studying for my Lifestyle & Weight Management Specialist cert, I rarely have time to pick up an actual book. Disappointing.
ReplyDeleteI've never actually eaten at Red Robin. I now know not to get the clam chowder should I ever go.
I used to love Red Robin before I lost the weight, but I just don't think the food is worth the calories anymore. Their burgers taste great, but obviously not at all healthy ;)
DeleteI hear ya when you talk about being disappointed in soup at a restaurant. We went to Red Lobster for lunch one day last week and I got soup and salad. I was good and got the red wine vinaigrette dressing, so the salad (I believe) comes in at less than 100 calories. So then I splurged with a cream soup. I KNEW I loved their clam chowder, and then I saw the potato/bacon soup on the menu, and got it instead. It was not nearly as good as clam chowder, nor even as good as potato soup I've had elsewhere. I have never been a fan of Red Robin....and I sure won't order the clam chowder.
ReplyDeleteI've actually never had Red Lobster's clam chowder, but I bet it's good!
DeleteMy booty is always cold.. even in the summer. Weird!
ReplyDeleteMine is, too!
DeleteI'm trying to shop for really good winter running tights right now. I want a piar that I can wear without having to layer over it, but I have the same problem as you...my butt is always freezing! The search continues!
ReplyDeleteHave you tried Under Armour Cold Gear? I wear them all winter, and love them. When it's windy, I might add a second layer, but they work pretty well!
DeleteHi Katie~ I'm a "lurker" (& a couponer.) I was just on a couponing site and thought of you. It referenced a place called "Cafe Press" (i'm in no way affiliated with them, and as a matter of fact, have never been to the sight.....anyways, they had the most adorable water bottle that said "I run because I really, really like dessert." I said to myself "that would be perfect for Katie @ Runs for Cookies! :O)
ReplyDeleteI love Cafe Press! I actually designed my own water bottle on that site that says "I run for cookies and wine" ;)
DeleteWhat would you have worn over your cold gear tights? I'm still trying to figure out this winter running. I ended up doing 8 miles on the treadmill this Sat cause we had snow and ice and I wasn't sure how to find 8 miles of cleared/not slick areas to run. Nor would I have known what to wear in 9 degree weather :( I have a cold gear outfit, but that's just one layer. I need to learn the technicalities of cold weather layering!
ReplyDeleteI would just wear a looser pair of yoga pants or moisture-wicking running pants over the tights. It's best to just experiment and see what YOU like best. In that temp, you definitely need to layer up!
