A super speedy interval run

I just finished doing intervals on the outdoor track at the high school, and I'm psyched at my pace! I was feeling kind of down about last week's intervals when I did them indoor--my pace was under 8 minutes per mile. But then I realized that I calibrated my foot pod wrong, so I wasn't as fast as I thought. But today, I redeemed myself!

I did quarter mile intervals again, and here is my pace for my "fast" splits:
7:43
7:38
7:46
7:47
7:56
7:44
ALL of my intervals were at a sub-8:00 pace! I've never done that before. In the fall, when I was training for that 10k, I was doing speed work. My usual pace for my intervals then was about 8:15.
Now, I know this isn't very impressive to some of you super speed demons out there, but for ME, it's pretty awesome, and I'm still feeling 'high' from my run. I'm starting to think that maybe I actually WILL get a PR at my 5k race next month. But tomorrow I'm going to do a super easy (read: slow) run, probably on the dreadmill (we're supposed to get dumped on with snow tonight).

Renee sent me a text this morning asking if I wanted to take the boys to McDonald's for lunch. She has three boys, and they are off of school also. I took Noah and Eli, and Alicia joined us with her two girls as well. Renee and Alicia are going to run the Leap Year 4-Miler race with me on Wednesday.

At McDonald's, I ordered Happy Meals for the boys, but I just kept staring at the menu and trying to find something that didn't sound GROSS to me--and I ended up not ordering anything. I haven't eaten McDonald's food since August 2009, and I have honestly developed a disgust for it. And not in one of those self-righteous ways, either. You all know that I admit when I think junk food is good! I'm not at all disgusted by Mrs. Fields cookies topped with a fuckload of buttercream frosting--but McDonald's just grosses me out!

The kids played in the Playland area for a while, and then we headed home. I made a salad with "Franch" (French+ranch dressings)--oh, how I missed that dressing when I was doing the challenge! I really do like the balsamic vinaigrette I was making, but not as much as Franch.

On my way home from the high school track, I decided to stop at Kroger and get a treat as a reward for my awesome splits today ;)  I bought something I haven't had in a while...
I LOVE Cherry Garcia! This isn't a whole pint (I could never eat just one serving from a pint!) It's just a little baby cup for 220 calories. Worth every calorie, too! I'm going to eat that and catch up on my shows tonight. My DVR is nearly full.

  1. Holy fastness, Batman! I'm no speed demon here, so those numbers are impressive! Did you feel like dying after each lap? YOU'RE BACK!

  4. I'm with you on McDonald's...well, other than the fries. ;) And I'm also not self-rightous or anything--I will eat just about any other crap fast food, just not McD's.
I also like cookies with a fuckload of frosting! Ha--love that word.
Congrats on your speed--I am so not a runner, but even I know that your pace is good. :)

  5. My fast speed is 10:00. :)

I developed an aversion to McDonalds as I got older and healthier, that still surprises me.I always liked the fries - never the meat. Now I feel sick if I eat them.

My favorite BJ flavor is heath bar crunch and unfortunately it doesn't come in the mini size. I rarely buy it but when I do the whole pint is usually gone in one sitting.

Ever since reading about Mrs. Fields dream bars on your blog I want to try one. But I don't live near a store!

  6. I'll stop at McD's for drinks but not food. My kids are not pukers, but vomit EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. we eat there. We occasionally eat out other fast food, but seriously they usually want quesadillas & I can make one in 3 minutes at home.

  7. McDonalds food disgusts me also. Earlier this month, they decided to stop using "pink slime" (leftover beef trimmings) in their burgers. So gross. I do actually like McDonalds coffee though.

    Good job on the run!

  9. I agree with you SO completely on the McDonald's. I can't even ever decide what to get if I am on the run and am stopping for the kids. Every now and then I'll get a fruit and yogurt parfait but mostly coffee and soda. That pink slime freaked me the hell out and I already didn't like their food any longer. Gah....

I also agree on the assload of buttercream. That is ALWAYS a good thing. Yumm!

  11. Ummm give yourself some credit, girl! That's AMAZING!!! You are such an inspiration to everyone on a journey! Whether they are trying to lose 100+ pounds, 50 pounds, or 10 pounds or less! :) Keep up the great work!

  12. Those tiny cups of Ben & Jerry's are saving my ass right now, I can't stop at a 1/2 cup either when I buy the pint container, so I have been buying the little guys. B&J's is my single biggest weakness, and having the tiny cups allows me to have it without going insane on it. Although the Cherry Garcia is my favorite, I would like to see them make all the flavors in the little cups!

  13. Yay you earned your ice cream! I'm currently trying to stay off dairy so no ice cream for me :( but come summer that may have to be amended! My fastest 5k is 31:24 and I would love to run one in 29 or 30 min. I want to be able to do it in that time and ENJOY it. Usually when I run a 5k I'm trying too hard, hurt the whole run and can't breathe after, haha!

    1. I HATE 5k races for that very reason! They're like a 3-mile SPRINT, and that's not fun at all. I just really want to knock this PR goal off my list and stick to longer (more enjoyable) races.

  14. Has it started snowing where you're at yet? Nothing for us, but the news sure is running with SNOWSTORM 2012 ~DUM DUM DUM~

Have you ever had Schwan's ice cream? Their ice cream is AMAZING...and their frozen yogurt is AWESOME! I have some chocolate frozen yogurt in my freezer right now...but probably not for long. ; )

  15. I just bought one of those mini cups of Skinny Cow Fudge Somethingorother this weekend! 120cal!

I am SO with you on the fast food thing. I have discovered that unless I am binging, I have very good self control. Fast food is just not worth anything more than a tiny burger and a small salad. I don't think I've had an order of fries in the whole past year that Ive been changing my lifestyle. In fact, I took my girls to the PlayPlace on Monday (Family day here in Alberta) and I bought myself a pita from the across the parking lot and ate it at McD's!

I am so envious of your running! Maybe I'll give it another shot one day soon. Anything to allow fuckloads of buttercream one day ;)

  18. I am rolling as I read your blog this morning! :D Now, I admit that I don't swear often. I'm not offended by other people swearing, I just rarely use swear words myself. But when I read, "I'm not at all disgusted by Mrs. Fields cookies topped with a fuckload of buttercream frosting--but McDonald's just grosses me out!" I nearly laughed out loud! I can not say I have heard of the word 'fuckload' but let me tell you that the next time I splurge on some buttercream frosting, it will be a fuckload of it and I will fondly think of you and thank you for the new word you have added to my vocabulary! ;)

  22. OMGosh! I tried this ice cream today and wow, its sooooo good!! Thank you for the tip! Also, I read your blog daily and absolutely love it. You are honest, out spoken and yet so kind & loving. You are the true meaning of inspiration. (((Hugs)))

  23. Well done on your splits Katie. I'm yet to run all the way anywhere! I've tried and failed one of the couch to 5k challenges, I ran and walked for the first 10 minutes, then had to walk the rest of the way because I was exhausted. It was the next day I came down with the start of a chest infection so I wonder if that had anything at all to do with it! I will begin again as soon as my lungs don't feel like they are led.

Australian McDonalds have a completely different way of working! Our burgers are like 10% of the calories that they are in the states, there is 100% beef and chicken in the meat part of the burger, it still has pickles but 'fuckloads' of vegetable matter that hasn't been processed. They also sell real fruit as an option for kids menus and yogurt etc)and salad some with no meat and some with 100% chicken strips crumbed or just grilled). Do you guys have McCafe? Besides the usual menu, over here they have a small section dedicated to a barista that serves up fair trade coffee, soy based drinks too and other foods that cater for a sweet tooth and also have allergy in mind, like they have 3 or 4 items that are Gluten Free, or diabetic friendly. In saying that, we rarely eat there anyway, I would much rather Indian curry!

  24. OH YEAH---Cherry Garcia---the reason for breaking any diet--anytime! But you didn't do that--only 220 calories. Wish I could find those little tiny servings of Ben & Jerry's, all they have is the bigger pint sized ones at my local grocery store. And those are a little more than 220 calories!
