I run for gelato!

I don't know why I always dread my long runs, because I end up having fun! I really wasn't looking forward to today's 12-miler, because the last 12-mile long run I did was AWFUL. I couldn't get that out of my mind all weekend as Monday was approaching.

I made sure to drink minimal wine on Saturday night, and yesterday I ate pretty lightly all day--nothing that would upset my stomach. It was hard to do that, because I went to Jennah's Pampered Chef party and they made CAKE. And she had cookies. And a tub of frosting for the cake. I had a little of each, but restrained myself from loading up a cookie with frosting for the road.

I woke up at 3:45 this morning to drink a quart of water, then went back to sleep. Woke up at 5:30 to eat breakfast and allow it enough time to settle. Jessica met me at my house at 8:00, and we drove to the Metropark. I parked in the center of two parks that are connected with a paved trail, so that I could pass the car mid-way through the run and get a drink. I brought some Gatorade and dates and a gel packet (which I didn't end up using).

We had a good laugh because Jessica had to pee before we started, but the bathrooms were closed. So she went in the woods. And as soon as she was done, we saw (right in front of our faces) a porta-potty. We just completely missed it for some reason!

The first few miles went by pretty quickly. We passed by the car after about 4 1/2 miles, so I drank a little Gatorade (yuck). Then we kept running to the other park. I liked the second park better, and we saw a few people there. We were running at a nice, easy pace, and at mile 7 I ate a date. Jessica bought a hydration belt with a 20-oz water bottle on it, and she let me try running with it to see if I wanted to buy one. It was actually really nice and I didn't even remember it was there after a couple of minutes. I'm going to buy one too.

We got a little bit lost, so I turned on the navigation tool on my Garmin, and it told us how to get back to the start (a nice feature! I've never used that before). After 10 miles, my knee and my feet were starting to hurt. And I was thirsty. After 11 miles, I was completely ready to be done, but I plodded on. I was feeling pretty achy at that point.

We finally finished the 12-miles, and it was such a relief to stretch after that!
I was so relieved to be done. We decided to head up to Whole Foods for lunch, and we got lost doing that as well. Ann Arbor is so confusing! We probably spent about 30 minutes driving around trying to find it, and we finally did. It was worth the hassle to find... I had a big slice of pizza for lunch, followed by carrot cake gelato for dessert. That gelato was HEAVENLY...
Oh, and we didn't bother to change into fresh clothes. I smell about as good as I look in this picture, trust me ;)  And since the gelato wasn't enough to refuel the 1300 calories I burned, I got a dessert to eat tonight, too. A chocolate peanut butter brownie. I had this once with Jerry, and it was orgasmic. Totally worth running 13 miles!
We're going to go to Whole Foods again after our 13-miler next week, too. I almost wish I never ventured into Whole Foods, because their desserts are to die for! It's so hard to pick just one thing. But at least I'm looking forward to my long run ;)

Lisa at Workout Mommy posted an interview with me on her blog today if you'd like to check it out. There are a lot of others that have been featured on her blog, and I loved reading some of their stories as well.

  1. I have never actually gone to Whole Foods for lunch! I always go in, grab some produce, and run back out. Maybe after some of my longer runs, I can steal your idea and give it a try. ;)

I look so forward to my long runs. I run alone, and it's such good quality time with ME. I have my music in my earphones, and I go at my pace. If my phone rings, I can ignore it without feeling guilty. By now, most of my friends know that early Saturday mornings, I'm on the road and they just wait for me to call them. It's a good time to think over any problems, be happy about my running progress, or think about the blogs I just read -- true story. I have totally told myself to keep going on a long run because of you and some other bloggers I have begun to read. I always say, "Katie wouldn't stop at mile 5 - so keep going!"

Look at your impact through blogging! Bet you never thought of that. :)

  2. OMG! Frick the gelato, those brownies look out of this world! Should I give you my no-bake peanut butter bar recipe? You would love them- peanut butter, butter, confectioner's sugar, graham cracker crumb layer with a layer of melted chocolate chips with pb stirred in on top. The heavens really do sing after you make them. I will totally turn down sex for a good dessert! (Who wants to expend any energy after eating it?)

I'm training for a half marathon in April and I get the same feeling when I see all those calories burned! I'm on a weight loss journey as well, 20 pounds gone and about 50 more to go! Your blog inspires me to keep going :)

  5. Ann Arbor IS confusing!!! I've had to go there for several different reasons and every time I feel like I'm in an endless maze of one-way streets! Glad you found your way...the next time I'm in Ann Arbor I'll have to try and find the Whole Foods store.

  6. Aside from the lean cut of your silhouette I would never have known you had run 13 miles.

I WILL scrub that peanut butter deliciousness from my brain. I WILL!

  8. Katie the next time you get lost in Ann Arbor you can always Facebook me or I can e-mail you my phone number :-). I live here. Which WF do you go to? The one off 23 or the one off 94? I live behind the one off 94.

    1. I like the one off of 94, but for some reason, my GPS always takes me to the one off 23. So we were trying to find it by memory, and I guess neither Jessica nor I have the best memory ;) We couldn't remember which exit to get off at, and then there was construction and detours... I think we'll have no problem finding it next week!

  14. Whole Foods has the BEST desserts! I used to live close to one and I would get the chocolate raspberry tart, yummy. Thankfully there isn't one close to me anymore because I was ventering in for a treat a little too often.

  15. Hey Katie! Do you always eat back your calories you burn? There is so many opinions-just wondered your method.

    1. On my long run days I do. But on other days, I usually eat half of what I burned during a run. So if I burned 300 calories, I would only eat 150 of those on top of my daily calories. But long run days are special--I work hard, and I reward myself with something that I REALLY want :)

  17. I miss Whole Foods so much! There's a great one in Seattle that was close to my old house. I'm visiting the states next week (a week in Hawaii, then 2 weeks in the Pacific Northwest) and Whole Foods and Trader Joe's are definitely on my visit list! That's quite the run you ladies did today, awesome! I found a great pin on pinterest that I like to think of during that last mile when I just wanna quit- no matter how slow you're going, you're lapping everyone on the couch! Haha so true! :)

  18. OMG. Whole Foods is bloody awesome! I found one 'near' us about 2 months ago...it's only an HOUR-ish drive! (why oh why are there only THREE in Canada?!)

  19. Way to stick your run out. Was it cold, windy and snowy out by you? (it was a cold and windy 8 mile run for me in MN today). Let me know if you find an electrolyte replacement that tastes good. I hate gatorade, powerade, etc. I did try coconut water today and I could not stand it! Thank goodness I tried it before I left the house. I had a few sport beans left so I took them out with me in case I needed them. I tried my amphipod fuel belt for the first time today and loved it! Even carrying around the extra weight/skin around my midsection, it did not move at all while running. YAY!

I first met you on Sparkpeople. I let life sidetrack me but I'm back and this time I'm doing it. I was thrilled to find you blogging and inspiring still!

    THANK YOU!
