A fun meet-up

The Tigers had a great opening day yesterday--the terrible weather we were supposed to have ended up being pretty nice! It was windy and chilly, but we didn't get the snow/rain mixture that was predicted, thankfully. Opening day is a very big deal around here--thousands of people go tailgate in Detroit all day. I had been thinking of going, but when the forecast called for crazy rain and wind, I decided I'd rather take care of Lucas ;)

Taking care of an infant yesterday was SO much fun--I miss when my kids were that little! We may not have gone to the game, but we wore our Tigers shirts and watched the game at home:

Nathan, Brian, and Becky had a good time in Detroit, and I obviously had fun with Luke. It was a great day!

In February, after I got back from San Diego, I organized a meet-up for Detroit/Toledo area From Fat to Finish Line fans. (In case you missed it, From Fat to Finish Line is the name of the documentary that I was in; and there is a Facebook group that formed based on the film. The group is all about supporting each other on weight loss/fitness journeys. It's open to anyone!) The first date that I'd picked for the meet-up had terrible weather, and we had to reschedule to today. Thankfully, the weather is beautiful today, so we met up at the State Park at 9:00 this morning.

I was nervous, because I was the one who organized it; so, I wanted everything to go smoothly and everyone to have fun. Jerry is off work today, so he was able to go with me (and that helped with my nerves, which was nice). We had a good turnout, and the group that showed up was fantastic!

First, we went for a 5K walk around the State Park. There was no wind at all, so even though it was about 40 degrees, it was sunny and felt nice. Then we all went to Cracker Barrel for breakfast. It was great getting to meet and chat with new people! Everybody was SO nice, and I would love to do it again. We may make it a monthly thing, which would be fun.

I was already excited about the From Fat to Finish Line meet-up in Vegas this November, but after today, I'm even more excited. I can't remember exactly what I've written about it, but it's basically a huge weekend get-together for fans of the film, Facebook page, and/or concept of From Fat to Finish Line. It takes place during the Rock 'n' Roll race weekend in November.

This is actually the third year of the the meet-up, but it will be my first year going. After going to San Diego and meeting so many nice FFTFL "tribe" members there, I wanted to meet as many as possible--and Vegas seemed perfect for that opportunity! I've also wanted to go to Vegas with Jerry for a long time, because he's never been there (I've only been there once, when I was 21 and I went with my mom).

So, we decided that we are going to make a fun vacation out of it, and I can't wait! There will be a few organized events for the FFTFL tribe. (By the way, the Vegas meet-up is open to anybody as well--the info can be found in the FFTFL group on Facebook. Angela was able to get discounts on hotel rooms and the races. I think there are a couple hundred people going!)

Well, I'm meeting up with a blog reader, Emily, this afternoon, so I'd better get ready. Fun day :)

  1. Thanks again for organizing our meet-up Katie! It was so fun to meet new people especially with similar stories. I didn't realize our story was so similar until I read your blog. I also lost 125 lbs. but it was 1987. (yep, I am old) I have maintained my weight loss for all these years with the exception of a 20-30 lb flux in weight gain. On the low end at the moment. You truly are an inspiration and I can totally relate to your struggles and your awesome accomplishments!!! You are truly awesome and don't let others have you think differently Katie!!!

    2. It was so great to meet you, Bridget! That is amazing you've kept off that much weight for so long. Very inspirational! I hope that you're able to make it out here again for another meet-up :)

  2. Thank you so much for putting the event together! I am a quiet person too and always a bit anxious meeting new people. I was especially nervous because I am soooo slow. I've lost about 70 pounds and have done a ton of races but I still don't consider myself a "real" runner. So meeting up with a running group was nerve racking! But i'm so glad I went. I can't wait to meet up with you all again. It was such a great group!
I tried to add you as a friend on facebook, but your privacy settings prevented it. (I totally get it!!) But feel free to add me if you want! :) Looking forward to the next meet up!

    1. Wow! What a great accomplishment Mandy! I believe we were all nervous and anxious to meet yesterday. Of course we were nervous for no reason as it turned out AWESOME!! :) I wish I lived closer to you guys, however, I will certainly make the drive across state if another meet-up event is scheduled. It was worth the drive!!! I felt amazing after our meet-up. I am sure we still have lots to share and learn from each other. Good luck!! You are a runner regardless of your speed. As I read on-line, we are much faster than the folks sitting on the couch. :) Have a Great Week!

    2. Sorry about that Mandy, I keep pretty tight privacy settings on Facebook--I sent you a request!

I'm so glad that you decided to go to the meet-up even though you were nervous. I was SUPER nervous! But everybody was so nice. Don't ever worry about being "too slow"--you are certainly a "real" runner, no matter your pace!

  4. I am a longtime reader and HUGE fan of your blog and Fat to Finish Line!!! Your story is crazy-inspirational!! I'm pretty quiet in the comments, but I did leave one a while back. I live really close to you (Riverview) and if you guys ever meet up again, I'd love to join you all! I just requested to join the Fat to Finish line page so, hopefully, I'll get accepted. Anyway, keep up the awesome work on the blog, you are inspiring to people that you don't even know!!
