Reader Mail

I received this email from a reader named Linda, and I thought it was amazing--I just had to share it! (With permission, of course.)

Katie, I am a long time reader of your blog, since about 2011. Had to show you this pic of my husband, Kirby, who just completed his 40,000th mile of running/walking today.

He began running in 1976. He's run four marathons, race-walked in one marathon and one half-marathon. He doesn't compete anymore, but at age 75 he does still walk 6-8 miles three days a week, then a longer walk of 8-10 miles on Saturdays. We live in Louisiana where it gets miserably hot in the summer & he still walks!

This makes me so happy--it reminds me of Floyd, the man that I've seen walking while I'm out running once in a while; he walks every single day, and he always has a kind greeting for me! A HUGE congrats to Kirby--that's such an amazing accomplishment and that smile says it all :)

Handmade With Love: Readers share their handmade items for sale

I feel terrible for getting this posted so late! I was hoping more people would contribute as they have in the past, so I kept waiting. And then as you know, last week was killer--all week long. But, better late than never!

Occasionally, I like to promote my readers' small businesses where they sell handcrafted items. As you know, I love anything DIY and crafting, so it's fun to see what others put out there. I love making things and people are always telling me that I should make things to sell--but it is very time consuming! I only bring this up because when people look at the price of handmade items they are usually in sticker-shock. When you add up the materials and the time that the artist spent working on a project, you can definitely expect to pay more. I never question paying more for a handmade item--simply because I know just how much time (and usually several mistakes and re-dos) go into it ;)

These readers are so very talented! I'm excited to share their small businesses with you. I was hoping to get this post up right after Thanksgiving so that there would be plenty of time before Christmas, but I just don't know if there will be enough time now. However, there are lots of fun gifts that are great for any time of year! (And for no reason at all.)

Here goes...

Amanda at Green Artist Designs

My business is called Green Artist Designs. I am an artist, designer, & photographer who does a variety of things! I am trying to grow my online business so I can be a stay-at-home mom. I create unique wood burning art, custom pet portraits, greeting cards, art prints of my paintings and photography work, handmade rustic ornaments, and so much more!

Readers can use code RUNSFORCOOKIES at checkout for 15% off anything on my website! I also offer free US shipping on all orders. :)

Green Artist Designs can be found on Amanda's website here.

I have a store on Etsy and have been there since 2006. I now run the store solo after my Mom and business partner passed in 2012.  I make handmade jewelry that is mostly Victorian or old world vintage style.  I love romantic feminine designs and I hope my pieces reflect that style.  Attached are a few of my designs but I have loads more on my Etsy site. Thanks so much!

My son loves playing in the sandbox but I didn't love getting sand all over the car and house. Other products on the market meant to remove sand left something to be desired so I decided to make my own. The Beach Buster glove makes it easy and convenient to remove sand from skin and objects. Simply slip on the glove and swipe it over the sand. The glove is filled with talc-free baby powder to make sand removal even easier, even on skin covered in sunscreen or bug spray. When the baby powder is gone, the glove opens so you can refill it, making it long-lasting.

I'm Kayla, the lady behind this small business. I named my business after my daughter Adeline. I have been selling my handmade goods for almost a year. I'm a stay-at-home-mom just trying to find my passion as well as get beautiful pieces into others' hands. I create polymer clay handmade earrings, keychains, bracelets, and necklaces. Creating earrings and keychains is so fulfilling and I cannot wait to see how Addy|Anns grows!

- Kayla Baldwin, (Mom of 1 about to be 2, dog mom, and wife). You can find my Etsy store here and I post almost all of my updated work on Instagram. I'm offering a discount code for Runs for Cookies' readers: just enter RUNSFORCOOKIES10 at checkout.

I make custom tumblers, keychains, pens, dog tags, ornaments, shirts, and more! I make these all myself, and I use resin, vinyl, glitter, and other supplies. I love crafting because of the joy it gives me when people receive their items, or they are gifted to them. I love seeing others happy!

You can find Liz's Etsy shop here.

Modern day life runs quickly and I find my mind doing the same.

Creating a beautiful, comfortable, simple environment has been a goal of mine. No one likes clutter, but I need to have inspiring items around me to soothe my mind and drain away anxiety. Items that are not only useful, but beautiful are my favorite. The spark that pulls your eye and your attention when you are relaxing on the couch watching your favorite show or sipping your favorite drink in the backyard on a warm summer evening.

I strive to create useful, beautiful products like this as naturally as possible.

I welcome feedback and questions about any of my products or methods.

My ETSY shop is Eleventh Avenue Crafts. I have had a super busy month and surprisingly have sold out of items! But you can check out my recent items to get an idea of what I make. I am closing my shop for the rest of the year and will open back up in January. I have a discount code that will be good the entire month of January. Please use RUNSFORCOOKIES for 15% off. Sorry I have nothing to offer right now!

And there we have it! Aren't there some seriously talented people out there?! These pictures just represent a small handful of their items, so make sure you check them out :)

Reader Email

I've had a super busy weekend! I had planned to write a post today about things that I eat (since a lot of people have been asking about it lately) but I haven't had time to look through my food logs and/or photos, so I will work on that this week.

My anxiety is still pretty high (just generalized anxiety; it's not something I can pinpoint) so I'm going to take today off of writing a post and just share some fun news from a blog reader. Check this out!

Hi Katie,

I had to share our new kittens we adopted from a local rescue a month ago. They are such sweet girls: Chloe Bell (all black) and Evie Binks (black with white).

- Kim

Aren't they SO cute?! (Kim, I'm so glad that you chose to adopt from a rescue! And I love that you adopted them together. Enjoy these little sweeties--they grow so fast, don't they?)

Remember, I would love to post happy news from Runs for Cookies readers once in a while, so if any of you are excited about something and want to share your news, please do! Just email me. I'll never post anything without asking permission first. I just know how excited I get to share news sometimes, but not everybody has a blog to do that--so I'd be happy to share it for you ;)

Reader Emails

Posting "Reader Mail" recently was pretty fun, and I'd like to do that now and again. I'd had the idea to do posts about news from readers (things people may want to share--like an engagement, a new baby, buying a house, paying off debt, adopting a pet, etc), as well as bargain finds from readers (cool things you may have picked up at a garage sale or thrift store), or other topics that I write about on my blog. (Over the last decade, my blog has gone from mainly weight loss and running to a smorgasbord of DIY, thrifty finds, recipes, mental health, pets, and other stuff.) So rather than making several separate posts like that, I may just post emails from readers now and then if it relates to something I generally write about. (And don't worry, I will always ask permission before sharing something.)

Anyway, here are a few reader emails to share!

This first one is a recipe from a woman named Lynette. She had seen my posts about all the peaches I bought and wanted to send me her favorite peach recipe. It sounded so good to me that I made it the very next day! It turned out to be delicious (my family ate it all within 24 hours) and I asked her if I could share it here. Here is what she wrote about it, and the recipe itself:
"It is a simple recipe but oh so good. And it is almost impossible to ruin. I accidentally scorched the marshmallow mixture once and I really did not want to throw it away. I carefully avoided the scorched areas and to my surprise, the recipe was still perfect. If you do not try it this year, I encourage you try it sometime. I love that it uses fresh peaches because you can really taste the peaches."

Peaches and Cream

44 large or approximately 4-1/2 cups mini marshmallows
2T lemon juice
2T orange juice
1-1/2 cups fresh peaches, peeled and sliced peaches (I usually slice the peaches into wedges and then slice into small bite-size pieces)
1 cup whipping cream, whipped

Melt marshmallows and juices over low heat. Refrigerate until partially thickened. Add peaches and whipped cream. Pour into 9-inch pan with graham cracker crust. Refrigerate.

For the graham cracker crust, I just use 1 pkg + 2 crackers of graham crackers (made into crumbs), 1/4 cup melted butter and 1/4 cup sugar. I apologize as I am not sure of the exact measurement of graham cracker crumbs.

If you try this recipe, I hope you like it as much as I do.

Best wishes,
Lynette

Well, I tried it and loved it! I did a terrible job on the crust (it did not stay together--from what I read online, I don't think my butter was melted enough) but that didn't change the taste at all. I imagined this in a pie plate, but I chose to use a square baking pan instead (just easier to portion out). I hope that it looks how it was supposed to, haha--but it was easy to make and it was definitely the perfect summertime dessert! Thank you for sharing. (I bet this would be good with pretty much any summer fruit--strawberries would be delicious)

Here is a printer-friendly version of Lynette's recipe!

This next email is from Elaine in Nebraska. She actually sent this for a Transformation Tuesday post, but she didn't have a "before" photo. I only post transformations with before and after photos, but the organizer in me loved this "after" photo of her spices--so I wanted to share this regardless. Despite the fact that I love to organize, my spices are a total mess right now--this inspired me and I hope to get mine organized like this soon. Thank you for sending this, Elaine! It looks so nice and neat.

"Hi Katie-

I'm heeding the call for transformation pictures. Alas, no "before" pictures, but it's not too difficult to visualize a jumble of spice jars of varying sizes and ages. I wasted so much time trying to find what I needed when cooking a meal, and finally had had enough. I ordered these spice racks, but the labels that came with them really didn't match everything that I had, so I went with 1-inch labels from an office supply store and made my own labels with my label maker. Under each label, I wrote the "best by" date in pencil, so I have a clue as to how old my spices are, and can update as needed. Lastly, I alphabetized them! Such a small but rewarding project to finally tame those spices!

--Elaine from Nebraska"

This email is from Karen, who wanted to share a thrifty find that she and her husband bought. I love finding used items that are perfect for what I've been looking for; I've furnished pretty much my entire house from Facebook Marketplace!
"We got this single floor lamp from Craigslist for $75.00, and put it in our living room. We got this pair of buttercream yellow floor lamps from Craigslist and put one on either side of the bed, and we only paid $75.00 for the pair. We didn't talk anybody down--we paid the asking price. We love all of them!

- Karen"

Reader Emails

I had no idea what to title this, because it's a very random post--I have a couple of things I wanted to share, but they didn't really fit in with things like "Transformation Tuesday", so I'm just going to put them in a post on their own!

(Please read this post about submitting things for various posts, if you're interested!)

First, this is a "Motivational Monday" sort of share from a reader named Karen. She's been reading my blog for a long time and is always so kind. I was thrilled for her when she sent me this email--her excitement was shining through. (She gave me permission to share this, of course)

Karen turned 62 years old in May and you would never know it from looking at her pictures. After buying a pair of jeans and being unhappy with how she looked in them, she became determined to lose the "muffin top" before her birthday. Here is what she wrote:

"I wish I had a 'before' picture from 15 months ago when I bought these Silver brand jeans from Maurices. I had a big muffin top that I planned to hide under a jacket or hoodie. The jeans were tight and I didn't feel good about myself. I got majorly back into my stair workout--I sweat my ass off on this workout! I actually love it. I've never done another workout that I didn't come up with excuses or procrastinate. I say out loud to myself 'push it!'. My muffin top is gone and for a person my age, I feel strong, like a mean bitch! I need to do more weight lifting but this is the best cardio I've ever done. When we get older, we can still get tougher. I am constantly working, but still working out."

If you read my post called "Boy Cookies and Girl Cookies", then you know that my beloved Aunt Mary Jo passed away early this year. I wrote about my memories of her in that post and I included a beautiful picture of her from when she was young.

I didn't know this, but a reader named Laura read the post and was inspired to draw a portrait from that photo. She messaged me on Instagram and asked if I'd like to have it--I was blown away at how amazing it looked! I thought it would be a perfect gift for Nancy, my cousin (Aunt Jo's daughter). Check this out--the original photo is on the left and Laura's drawing is on the right:

Laura hasn't been drawing for very long--shocking, right? It's so funny how she picked it up, too--she read my post about when I wanted to learn a new skill and I bought some drawing supplies and drew a picture of a cat based on instructions from a book. I didn't have interest in pursuing it further, but it sparked something in Laura, which she explains in her email below.

"I starting my art journey in August of 2018; my medium is pastel and sometimes graphite. It actually all started with your post about goals and “learning a new skill”. You had a blog post and picked up art posting this adorable cat you drew.

That inspired something in me and I remembered how much I liked to draw as a kid. I recalled really loving using pastels and decided that I would pick that up and see if I could make any progress. I bought a box of pastel pencils and then discovered this awesome website called colinbradleyart.com that offered tutorials. I signed up and immediately loved it, especially doing animals.

I was not very good, but I kept at it and got better. I started doing more and more types of pets and in the past couple of years even did a few commissions. I love animals, so drawing them seemed like the best of both worlds. That is my typical subject, but every once in a while, I see a picture with a story that moves me and I attempt that. So was the case for your Aunt Jo.

I was so touched by your blog post and then when I saw that photo you posted at the end, I thought, 'I want to draw her for your family'. I was very pleased with how it came out even though that is not my typical subject. I am so happy you like it and I hope it can bring some joy in such a sad time.

I don’t have a website yet as I typically post my art on Instagram. My entire art portfolio can be found there on @laura.m.art or @CustomPetPortraitsByLaura to see only my pet work. I can be reached on either of those accounts if anyone is interested in having a pet commission done or just has an art question."

                - Laura Mulcahy

Here is the progression of her work: 2018, 2020, and today:

I highly recommend checking out her work on Instagram. I'm still stunned that she hasn't been doing this her whole life! (And if you are looking to have a pet portrait drawn, she packaged the drawing so carefully--it arrived in perfect condition. I would definitely recommend her work!)

One of the ideas I mentioned in the post looking for submissions/ideas is to write readers' fun news--I really like this idea, so I hope people will submit things! I received this fun news from a reader (also named Katie) who I met during one of my trips to the Pacific Northwest. Here is what she had to say:

"Attached is myself in my new (to me) little Minnie Winnie, a.k.a Littles. I was very fortunate (and grateful) that COVID-19 didn't adversely affect me. I am a software engineer and it was no problem to work from home. I even went into the office some because our office was so small that I was the only one going in. I say it was because my company has decided that working remotely is working out so they have decided to let the lease go on the office and we will be working from home all the time.

So...I got a home on wheels! This has actually been a dream of mine for a long time but Frankenstein, my dog, and I will now be able to travel while we work!! I am going to start small but hope to take a cross country trip to go spend a month "wintering in Louisiana" this spring! I am super excited and looking forward to it. I also attached a pic of my travel buddy!"
