Fetch

Well, I lied. I ended up eating two pieces of Eli's cake yesterday instead of just one. But the rest went in the trash!  I wish I could say that I regretted the second piece, that it tasted terrible and I only ate it because it was there. But honestly, I truly enjoyed the second piece just as much as the first. I'll always be a die-hard sweets fan!

Speaking of which, someone asked me a question about my daily treat, and I've actually never been asked this before... She was wondering why I save my daily treat to eat at nighttime. A very good question! The reason I do this is because when I eat my treat, I want to really really enjoy it. If I had eat a piece of cake at Eli's party, I would have been distracted by conversation, kids yelling, music blaring, my tight jeans, etc, which would not have satisfied me at all. At home, in the evening, I'm comfy in my pajamas and the kids are in bed and I can sit and relax and TRULY enjoy my treat.  Also, it gives me something to look forward to during the day!

The past couple of days I've been working on a batch of tea wallets to put for sale on my Gockets page. I've put them on there already, so I retitled the page "Shop" for lack of a better word. Anyway, they took soooo much more time and work than I thought they would, so that is the only batch I'll be making! But they are super cute and a great way to use up the fat quarters of fabric that I had.

I also was ironing the initials on a couple of Gockets, and Estelle was completely fascinated. She kept stealing the velcro strips from out of my bag of supplies. Then she just sat and watched me like a hawk. Apparently, she's taken on the job of quality control manager.

I've been trying to get a video of her playing fetch. I swear that she knows as soon as I turn on the camera and she walks away. But she plays fetch like a dog would! She has a drinking straw that she plays with, and she'll bring it to me or Jerry over and over over again to throw it. So we'll throw it, she chases it, and brings it right back.

Unfortunately, she likes to do it mostly in the middle of the night. She'll bring her straw onto the bed and then meow until we throw it for her. And repeat about 10-15 times. It used to be amusing, but it gets a little annoying after a while. She has us trained very well ;)  Does anyone else have a cat that plays fetch?

Tomorrow starts marathon training!! I still haven't registered, but I hope to this week. My first week of training is pretty simple. It looks like this:

Monday- Run 3 miles easy.
Tuesday- Run 3 miles easy.
Wednesday- Run 3 miles easy.
Friday- Run 6 miles (long run)

Tomorrow, I'm actually going to be running 4 miles, because I'm meeting Jessica. I've only been running three times a week since surgery, so I'll have to add a fourth day. I'm going to try and stick to the schedule as much as possible so that I'm super prepared for the race. I'm still having issues with my knee (although not as bad as it was), and I'm just praying that it will get better on its own.

Lifetime Movie Network just reminded me how pathetic I am... "You're watching 'KILLER MEN SUNDAY' on LMN."   LOL, how do I get sucked into these movies?!

  1. Katie, my sister's cat plays fetch! He comes running whenever my niece is doing her nails. He'll take her nail file out of the bag of supplies, bring it to her and she throws it through the kitchen. He then runs and slides after it, grabs it with his paws, puts it in his mouth and brings it back to her! My dog doesn't even do that! Molly runs after the toy, picks it up and proceeds to play keep away! It's amazing! I'll have to find the video.

I had a bad food day today. We got together for brunch at my sister's house for my dad's birthday and we had bagels (every Sunday after church we do that at my Mom's anyway), but my sister made zucchini quiche and I made a chorizo, peppers and onions tortilla (in Italy it's called a frittata). Then came dessert and I made chocolate mousse stuffed chocolate cupcakes with chocolate fudge frosting. You would have loved them!

  2. I got sucked in to LMN earlier today, too. Until the Tara Reid movie came on. That one was just so bad we actually changed the channel afterward. Haha!

  3. My cat, Kacie, totally plays fetch too. She especially likes to play with bottle caps but since we have a toddler running around they are just perfectly sized choking hazards so now she just brings us random things. I am the same exact way with my treats! After my son is in bed, I sit in my room by myself and eat something delicious so I don't have to share a single bite!

  4. my cat played fetch with those foam balls, have you tried using pipe cleaners? Wrap it around your finger and then toss it..it will bounce...My cat loves it

  5. Our cat loves to play fetch too! Estelle is such a cutie. Isn't that middle of the night, sad, "play with me" meow kind of annoying? Ha ha :)

    Yay for marathon training!!!

    1. Yes, that's the one :) I love his programs. I like that there isn't any speedwork in it, because my knee has been bothering me (usually when I try to do some speedwork). What marathon are you running?

  7. Love Love Love. Lifetime Movies and Lifetime Movie Network--I swear that can suck me in for hours, or (let's be serious) days :) I'm training for my third half--but the training doesn't start officially until Feb. 19th. I really want to do a full marathon, but as I'm in law school right now, I really don't have the time to commit. I think that is really funny your cat plays fetch...I pet sat over our winter break and one of the cats would eat the dog food and the dog treats, it was super cute and completely bizarre! Happy Sunday!

  9. I had a cat years ago that would fetch Hershey Kisses wrappers (about 4 rolled into a ball). We'd throw, she'd chase, pick it up and drop it at our feet. The cats now will chase them but not bring them back. Plus, the cats now will only play with the original milk chocolate ones, no other flavor would do. I tried wrapping them inside out but no go.

  10. Our crazy cat Jake plays fetch. Usually with his toy mice. He will bring us one and drop in front of us until we throw it. And like yours, it continues for several rounds. We adopted a dog a few months ago and she doesn't even like to play fetch. Weird, huh? Love your blog!

  11. Aww she's so cute. Both of our cats fetch but the chubby one not as often. Our tiny Izze is a fetching freak and will drive us nuts several times a day wanting to fetch her furry mice toys or one of my hair scrunchies. She lives for fetching the scrunchies. Weirdo.

  12. My kitty Jazmin (passed away in 2005) used to LOVE straws and she would do the same thing. Before bed though we would put them in a drawer so she couldn't drive us crazy. Those tea wallets are so cute. Such a good idea! I used to toss tea bags in my purse and would end up with tea leaves all over. YUCK! My Mother and I decided to do our first marathon May 2013. My boot camp coach is going to give us a training schedule to start this May. It's funny you said that about Lifetime movies......my husband last night said they're evil because once you turn it on you can't turn it off. You're hooked after one minute, then you have to watch the next one because the preview showed all through the current movie. I was cracking up because we started watching one mid way through and I wasn't feeling it so I turned it.....he was like "REALLY? We have 15 minutes to see what happens and you change it?" LOL.

  13. Estelle is adorable! I had cake this weekend too! I hope you can take a look at the cake I made for the party!! I'm pretty proud of it! :)

  14. I save my treat until the kids are asleep too! Otherwise they want some also, then I end up sharing my treat. Even if I tried to hide they always find out!

Treats are so much better when enjoyed in peace and quiet : )

  15. I'm trying to talk my hubby into letting me get a cat. Estelle cracks me up! I have been wanting a Gocket for awhile but it just hasn't been in the budget, I'm looking forward to ordering one on payday! : ) Good luck with your runs this week, I hope your knee doesn't give you any problems.

  16. My cat plays fetch too! She loves to play with those teeny beanie babies they used to have at McDonald's. It's super cute. She loves to throw them up in the air too ... I think she was a dog in her past life.

I love your blog! I've had 3 knee surgeries ... and gained about 30 lbs in all after them so I want to get back into running (because that helped me stay in shape through college). And your blog is seriously a great inspiration. Your 100 lbs difference section almost made me cry thinking of how similar we are ... well were.

Have fun on your runs this week and I hope your knee feels better!

My hubby and I just bought a "dreadmill" ;) But I'm pretty excited about it!

  17. Kate I've had knee pain after running too. Generally it is caused by weak hips, quads, or hamstrings. The best thing you can do is be sure to stretch after running and try some strenthening exercies. You can just google many and most of them can be done at home. The only equipment you need is you!

Don't know if this will help but when training for a marathon staying injury free is so important. Good luck!

  18. Hello Kate!
Your blog is such an inspiration, keep up the good work and maybe after reading about my own running journy you'll have some advice?

  19. Katie-My kitty that looks a LOT like Estelle also likes to fetch, her favorite thing to play with are pipe cleaners!!!
Have you considered the "first" marathon training schedule? I used it last year for my first marathon, it is only 3 days a week, so it is less likely to cause over-use injuries, google it!!!!:-)
Maybe (my Estelle look-alike kitty) is now laying on my back as I lay on the floor typing this on my phone!!!! She is so silly!!!! She lays directly on my butt everynight as I am reading before going to sleep in bed too!!!!

  20. Fluffy Girl, I'm not sure if you will see this, but if you do, could you send me an e-mail?? When I click on your name, it just tells me that your profile isn't available, so I'm not sure how to get in touch with you!

Katie,, your opening Line " I lied " made me laugh .. I do the same thing,, " Ok I am not gonna eat anymore of this ".. than I do! LOL,, but if I know you,, you will be back on track,, no questiones asked,, thanks for being Honest !

I am so excited for your marathon trianing,, and Katie I am no expert as I have only done one full and had a terrible experience,, adn swore I would never do it again,, but low and behold I am planning on another,, Just not this year. But one thing I have not heard you speak alot about during your runs is nutrition . I Know you have done a few long runs,, But your marathon training is going to take you up to about 20 miles for training. And something you really,, really have to tune in is your nutrition during the run. This is so important to also help get you to the finish . I know that you will research and figure out what you need to do . This is really the hard part for me,, as running with stuff in my stomach is so hard for me,, but you can train your body to do this very important part of completeing and getting to the finish Line,, good luck with your training,, and also you are right in your thinking of doing this while you have a training partner,, I would have never made it to the finish without mine,, thats for sure. <3
    keep me posted :-)

  22. Your kitty is so cute! We have a black and white kitty named Yenko. He is 15 years old now, but when he was younger he used to fetch. I bought a big pack of the terry cloth ponytail holders and we would shoot them across the room at him. He would jump really high in the air and catch them and he would also fetch them. He was *so* fun. He isn't as active now, but he still likes to wake us up at night just to be petted. :-)

  23. Thank you Katie, I am another one of the many that have found thier way here from Pintrest. You are an inspiration. Thank you! I've been all over your blog reading your posts and experinces. I can do it too! and it is starting now. :)

  24. Hi Katie,
I just love your tea wallets and your Gockets. I have become obsessed with Pintrest and Mi-Made.com. You are so creative. I was so inspired by your blog that I started my own. I decided to write down my thoughts including my struggles, daily motivations, and hopefully accomplishments. I can't wait to post pictures of my jeans before and after. That photo you have of them on the floor is one of my favorite. Thank you...

  25. Two of the three cats in my house love to hunt-straws, pencils, pens, and a piece of weather stripping that I have no clue where it came from. And they love to chase and fetch their little toy mice. One of them cries when she's bringing something to me. So cute.

Love reading your blog. Getting my nerve up to hit the road and start running.

  26. Hi Katie,

I love reading your blog - your story is such an inspiration to anyone who is just starting their journey. Does your old (non-sparkpeople) blog still exist? Are you will to provide a link to it, or did I just miss that information?

I just started training for my first 5K - I'm hoping to run a minimum of half of it. Good luck with your marathon!

    1. That's great you're training for your first 5k!! I'm sure you'll do a great job (and then get hooked on it, haha)

My old blog is no longer public... but I'm working on turning it into an e-book, so that it's easier to read. I'll let you know if I do!

  27. I have a cat that will play fetch! And he too will bring his toy into mine and my husbands bedroom in the middle of the night to play. He will also wake me up by getting right in my face and meowing because he wants under the covers. He has his humans trained well!! haha

I love your blog and you are such an inspiration to me! I've not yet tried running but I live in Central Indiana and am contemplating signing up for the Mini to get me motivated to get into shape and lose some weight.

Thanks for sharing your story with everyone :)

    1. The Mini is SO MUCH FUN and it's perfect for a first-time half-marathoner. It's very walker-friendly too, so you don't have to run it. You should give it a try! But I would register soon--it may even be sold out already.

  28. One of my college roommates and I had a cat named Lucy that used to play fetch with one of those cheesy fair snakes that you win. She LOVED IT! It was quite hilarious and always made us laugh. How weird is that, though?!

Glad you enjoyed the 2nd piece. Yum, buttercream!!!

  29. My cat has a long cord (like a cord from the blinds) on a stick that he loves! He will grab hold of the end of the cord with his mouth and drag it all over the house. It is soooo loud at night. He runs up stairs and it hits every corner then he will drag it on or under the bed. :-)

  30. Just be sure Estelle's cigartte ashes don't fall into your fabric, it could start a fire. LOL! LOVE your cat stories.
