A birthday shopping trip

I guess skinny girls would like to go on a birthday shopping trip to the mall for cute new clothes--but THIS girl decided to go to Trader Joe's and Whole Foods ;)

First, my dentist appointment. I had to get a cavity filled, and I really was dreading getting my mouth numbed. When I got there, the dentist said that it was just a very small cavity, and not too deep. I asked if I could do it without getting numbed, and he said sure. He said that when the drill starts going, it kind of heats up and that can cause some twinges of pain, but if that happened, they could stop and then numb me.

I don't know where the bravery came from, but I chose to try it. I was so scared that the drill was going to hit some nerve and just shoot horrible pain through my body, but I felt a couple of uncomfortable twinges (like nails on a blackboard kind of feeling) and I asked if it would be done soon. He said yes, and I stuck it out for another 10 seconds (less than 30 seconds total) and the drilling was done!

He quickly filled the cavity and I was done. In and out of the room in less than 5 minutes--and I didn't have a numb mouth. Awesome!

Then Jerry and I drove to Trader Joe's. I'd only been to Trader Joe's once in my life and that was in Minnesota while visiting my brother--so I didn't get to buy anything because we couldn't bring it home with us. I was very excited to check it out.

We spent a while browsing, and I don't know if I just happen to be a cookie magnet, but that store has a LOT of cookies!! We ended up buying three different kinds of cookies. I looked for Cookie Butter, but they were sold out :(   I did find something that looked almost as good though...
That, dear friends, is dark chocolate FILLED WITH Cookie Butter!! I haven't tried it yet, but I will let you know how it is after I do.

The rest of the loot:
Cookies, wine, chocolate covered espresso beans, cookies, beer, peanut butter, wine, and more cookies... and more wine. Going with Jerry was not a smart decision--he's such a bad influence! Actually, the only things he picked out were the beer and the cheese puff things.

After we left Trader Joe's, we went to Whole Foods. First, we drooled over the desserts shopped for a few minutes, then brought our few purchased items to the car. Then we went back in to get some lunch from the salad bars. I chose the hot food bar this time, and after taking little spoonfuls of lots of items, realized that I mostly just had different shapes of pasta covered in different types of cheese. Whoops. But I couldn't very well put it BACK.

We got a chocolate peanut butter brownie to share for dessert--thanks to you all who told me that I just HAD TO celebrate National Peanut Butter Day by eating my weight in peanut butter (that IS what you were implying when you told me it was National Peanut Butter Day, right? RIGHT?)

After lunch, I felt sick. And we drove home.

It was the brownie that did me in. It was SO RICH. I also bought a cupcake to have for my actual birthday tomorrow, and thanks to the brownie, the cupcake doesn't even sound good right now. It's sitting in the fridge, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it tomorrow. It's maple-walnut flavored.

Today has definitely been a day of indulgence. But tomorrow goes back to normal!

  1. How can you celebrate your birthday properly without a little indulgence? I manage to spread out the celebrations for way too long, regretting it later on! I am so glad I don't live near a TJ's and that I'm not a member of any warehouse clubs. I do enough damage walking into the store to grab one bagel!

Did you work out all of the kinks in your blog?
(P.S. I had roasted cauliflower tonight!)

  3. Ah, that's so awesome that you went to Trader Joe's! The closest one to me is about 2.5 hours away, so I also haven't been for "real." :(

  9. We drove up to Ann Arbor a few weeks ago and got the cookie butter! TJ's also has killer frozen pie crusts. And wine, soooo much good wine!

If we were closer, I would be broke!

You are so brave to go without getting numbed! Every time they aske me that at the dentist, I'm like "Hells no!!!" Ha ha.

  15. I never get numbed for a filling. I would rather deal with the few seconds of pain than being numb for the rest of the day. I don't think I've been numbed for a filling since about 4th grade when a filling fell out the day I was leaving for summer camp & I talked my dentist into refilling it without numbing me since I was going to camp.

I do have a high pain tolerance, however, I'm not stupid. I have a couple of crowns and I did let them numb me while they ground the tooth down for those! LOL

    Happy Birthday!!

  18. One thing I really don't like about living in Japan is that it's much harder to maintain a specialized diet (dairy free, gluten free, organic, etc). In Seattle Dan and I would make our weekly trips to the Trader Joe's and Whole Foods down the street. I wish so bad I could find almond butter, imitation cheese and coconut oil here! Hope you're having a fun birthday week!

  22. Happy Happy Birthday! Have you had TJ's corn pasta before? If so, how did you like it. Something about the color freaks me out and forbids me to buy it but if I had an endorsement, I might feel better about it! :) That cookie butter candy bar is made by Satan...no other explanation!

  23. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Sweet Katie! Enjoy your day. Sounds like you had lots of fun the day BEFORE your birthday, but don't forget to celebrate on the REAL day too. My D-I-L will be 30 in August, and my oldest son will be 40. I guess that makes me very old too. Oh yeah, and hubby will be 60 this year, all their birthdays are in August. Should be quite a party this year.
I'm half afraid to go back to TJ's and see if they have that cookie butter back in stock yet, it just sounds too good to resist. And now you found dark chocolate filled with cookie butter??? OMG! Be afraid....be very afraid. It sounds delicious. My keyboard is getting all wet from my drooling. Seriously!

  26. I don't know if we have a Trader Joes in Utah but it sounds like someplace I should avoid! That cupcake is total "food porn" Katie! LOL
Hope you're having a great day, I've decided it's now a birthday week that I get to celebrate, not just a day :)

  27. I love Trader Jo's. If you like yogurt they have the best greek yogurt around. I only let myself get one or two because they are high calories, but they are so good. The kids usually help me eat it anyway. I love that you did your birthday shopping at grocery stores! My favorite part of having a birthday is the special meal that I get to share with my family! I am not sure what I should have my husband make me when I turn 30 next month?? What are you having?
