My Squirrels

I'm going to stop saying that I'm going to write more often. I have every intention of doing it, but time just goes by so fast! I had been meaning to write an update post about my new year's resolutions, but last weekend turned into a little bit of a nightmare, so I want to write about that.

First, you all know how I feel about my squirrels. I have a huge tree in my backyard right off of our back deck, and we've had about six squirrels at a time living in that tree for years. I've seen many generations of squirrels, and I love seeing the cycles--pregnant mom, then tiny babies. It's SO CUTE to see mom "training" her babies. From what I can tell, she makes them stay in a certain area on the tree and they watch her as she comes to the deck to get nuts from me. After about a year, the babies are brave enough to come up to me on their own.

It's hard to tell without a reference with a larger squirrel, but this is one of the babies when mom says it's okay to go play

One of the things I love most is that the squirrels trust me. It's very difficult and takes time to earn their trust, but eventually they recognize my voice and my hand signal that I have nuts for them. I keep peanuts (in the shell) out at all times, but for hand-feeding, I have walnuts, pecans, and hazelnuts (all in-shell), as well as shelled walnuts and pecans. Yes, they are spoiled!

Here is a short compilation video... (I hope this works--I feel like I don't even know how to compose a blog post anymore, hahaha)

I used to name them, but eventually it was hard to tell some of them apart, so I just started calling them all "Buddy". They frequently come up to the back door and look inside the kitchen to see if I'm around. Whenever I see them, I open the door and hand them a nut. It feels like passing out candy to trick-or-treaters! Whenever I cook dinner, they see me through the skylight in the kitchen and I can see them come down from the tree to the deck.

At least once or twice a day, I go outside with my "nut sack" (hahaha, I will never NOT laugh at that--it's a little bag I made to hold nuts). The squirrels sit on the railing (sometimes four of them at a time, which you can see in the video above) and I continuously hand out the shelled nuts. I watch them eat and then they reach their hands out for another. I love that they hold onto my fingers while they pick up the nut with their mouth. This time I spend outside is something that I look forward to every day; I go out there with no distractions and just interact with my beloved squirrels. It's therapeutic for me.

I know that to a lot of people, it seems ridiculous to love squirrels this much. But they bring me joy! Lately, I've had so much heavy stuff on my mind; feeding the squirrels is one of the only moments during the day where I can shut out the noise in my head and focus on the present.

Last Friday, it was *insanely* windy (not to mention cold). Well, Chick (my cat) hates storms and the wind was freaking him out. He was standing outside of Noah's door in the hallway and meowing loudly, so I started to walk over to him to comfort him. As I was walking past my dining room, I heard a loud crack from the backyard, and looked outside to see (what I thought was) a large branch coming off of my squirrel tree.

We've lost a branch here and there through the years, but this looked big. As I stood there, I saw the ENTIRE TREE tip over and uproot. This tree was massive! Maybe 80 feet tall? (I'm totally guessing). I just started yelling, "Holy shit, oh my god!" over and over again while I panicked a bit. Noah was the only one home and he was sleeping.

The view from my window 😞

Where I like to sit and feed the squirrels

My first thought was my squirrels. I was so worried about them, and I knew that one of them had babies very recently. I immediately ran outside and started looking for the babies. I knew where all the hidey holes were, so I just went from one to the next, searching. I was about to give up when I heard a loud squeaking noise (it's a baby squirrel in distress cry) and I followed the noise. I saw a tiny baby underneath a huge branch and my heart sank. I thought the branch was pinning it down and I was so scared that I wouldn't be able to get it out.

Thankfully, I was able to reach under and grab it. I held it against my chest to warm it and he stopped his cry. I started looking for any siblings nearby and didn't see or hear any. At that moment, my next door neighbor came over and I told him what I was doing. He said, "Did you see the front of your house?"

I had run outside right after the tree fell, so I didn't know what he was talking about. He said that a utility pole fell on top of my garage, and the wires were hanging over our driveway. That was obviously a big deal, but my first priority was finding the squirrels. I went back to where I found the one baby and dug around inside the tree. Right as I was about to give up, I found another baby. I continued to look for babies and their mom. As I was doing that, a police officer or firefighter came into the backyard to tell me that he taped off the street in front of my house because of the power lines. I still hadn't even looked at it yet, so I went inside with the babies and put them inside of a winter hat to keep them warm, then I walked out to look at the garage.

Baby boys, a week and a half old

Sure enough, the utility pole had come down right on top of the garage and punctured a large hole in it. There was also a dead tree across the street that had fallen into the road, blocking the road off. My electricity went out, of course. And interestingly, my neighbors' still had power. It was just my house that lost power! Between the tree, the branch, and the electricity, it reminded me of the subreddit r/fuckyouinparticular, because nobody else in the neighborhood had damage.

I had no idea what to do about the squirrels. It was still crazy windy and cold outside, so even if mom came back for them, she had nowhere to put them, considering the tree was on the ground. With all that was going on, I called Jerry and ask if he could come home from work. He left work and when he got home, he said he called wildlife rehabs on his way home and lined something up for us. I was SO grateful! The woman from the rehab told us what to do--absolutely do not try to feed them or give them anything to drink, and it was absolutely crucial to keep them warm. She suggested putting one of those disposable handwarmers under a blanket.

She said we could wait until morning when the wind died down and try to get the mom to come back by playing a loop of the baby squirrel in distress cry (I found it on a wildlife rehab site). If that didn't work within an hour or two, we could bring them to her.

Without electricity, it was SO COLD in the house that night. The thermostat said 51 degrees on that first night. I put the squirrels (still in the hat) into a small box with a handwarmer underneath them. I was worried about the cats finding them, so I slept with them right next to me.

In the morning, it was still very cold, but I tried doing what the rehab woman suggested with the squirrel cries. There were no squirrels in sight, which was disheartening. I felt *horrible* about taking the babies from their mom, but I decided to bring them to the rehab. They were only about a week and a half old, so they needed to eat. The woman at the rehab was so kind and I felt very confident that the babies were in good hands with her. She texted later that night to say they were eating and doing well.

Jerry and I, on the other hand, were freezing. The thermostat got down to 45 degrees that second night! The energy company still hadn't come to fix the pole. On Sunday, I called my brother, Nathan, who is a lineman for the energy company and told him what was going on. He called his supervisor and after some digging around, it turned out that someone had marked the job as "complete" on Friday night. So they didn't even know that we still had no power!

On Sunday evening, they came out and restored power temporarily. They still had to replace the pole, but they at least got the wires back up out of the way. Jerry had to put a tarp over the hole in the garage roof. We were so excited to get warm and sleep in a warm bed! (Interestingly, we discovered that when a Tempurpedic mattress gets super cold, it becomes hard as a rock.) We contacted the insurance company about the wind damage, who sent an adjuster out a couple of days ago to assess.

Once all the chaos was back in order, I kind of had a little breakdown. I am completely devastated about the tree. I'm sure the squirrels will probably still come around, but it's just not the same. I loved sitting out on the deck and watching the squirrels in the tree. It was also home to a lot of them. I can always plant another tree (and I will) but it'll be at least 15-20 years before it'll be big enough for squirrels to inhabit. And you all know how good I am at growing trees. 🙄

For a few days, I didn't see a single squirrel at all. Today, there were three that kept coming up for nuts. Usually there are about six. I just feel like my spirit is crushed. I'd already been having a tough time mentally, but this was a huge blow. I'm not sure I did the right thing with the babies, but at least I know they are safe. I haven't seen their mom yet.

Anyway, that was quite the weekend. Right now, it's windy and snowing, and I just want the weather to warm-up!

Hello Fresh (this is *NOT* an ad!)

I'm sure you've all heard of Hello Fresh--a company that delivers the ingredients and recipes for meals. I don't know much about it except for what I've heard on advertisements. This is not a sponsored post or an ad of any kind; my mom just gave me part of a kit, so I thought I'd mention it.

My mom's friend orders Hello Fresh (for a single woman, it actually makes a lot of sense). I've never bought into these meal programs because 1) I'm a stay-at-home mom, so I work the grocery shopping/cooking into my days, and 2) It's crazy expensive.

Anyway, my mom's friend was able to send a free kit to a friend, so she sent it to my mom. My dad is... well, not the most open-minded person when it comes to trying new foods, so my mom shared with me. First, she made a recipe and brought over the leftovers (a LOT, because my dad didn't want it). She also gave me a four-person meal of beef tostadas.

The recipe that my mom made was AMAZING. As I ate it, I realized just how easy it would be to make on my own, so I'm going to buy the ingredients to do that. (I didn't think to take a picture, but trust me--it was delicious!)

Tonight, I made the tostadas. I actually wasn't impressed with the amount of time (and dishes) it took to make this recipe. With a meal kit, I'd hoped it'd be super fast and easy. It was easy, which is great for people who don't typically know how to cook, but it took a lot of dishes to prepare and the prep work was--well, more than I would typically like.

I made the kids do all the dishes after dinner. Hahaha ;)

Aside from that, it tasted pretty good! I definitely liked the dish my mom made much better, but this one was good, too. I could recreate it, but it's not at the top of my priority list. Here are the cards that show the recipes, so you can see how the meal delivery system works. The ingredients shown are what are delivered with the recipe.

Here is the one that my mom made. It's called "Pork, Mushroom and Carrot Bibimbap". I've never heard the word "bibimbap" before. But just trust me that it tastes really good!

They send you all the ingredients, but nothing is prepped--so you have to do all the prep work yourself. To me, this wasn't helpful at all. Since I do the meal planning and grocery shopping, I will already have the ingredients on hand. However, for someone who doesn't have the time to meal plan or shop, this wouldn't be super convenient. On the bright side, it made a pretty large amount of food! (I used two kits' worth, so it was four servings.)

Anyway, the family liked it (although it was kind of greasy) but I don't think I'd get the ingredients to make it again. The Asian dish that my mom made, however, was SO GOOD that I'll definitely be buying the ingredients to make that again!

This morning, Little Duck was cracking me up. He insisted on being in my "progress photo" for 75 Hard. He's grown quite a bit over the last month, so apparently, he wanted to show that off ;)

During my morning walk, I took Joey to his favorite place... the access road that goes through the marsh across the street. I like going there because I can let him off of his leash and he LOVES running through the brush and into the marsh and bouncing all over the place. Right now, the path is the most overgrown I've ever seen it, however. I hope that someone mows it soon.

Anyway, here is Joey in all his glory:

I finished up the shelves in the garage today! Yesterday, I finished building them and then I primed them. Today, I painted them. I used the same paint that I did on the walls, so it's not very exciting, but I didn't want to have to buy more paint unless necessary and they are going to be loaded with the junk in the garage, so does it really matter that they are the same gray color as the walls?

I'm just really excited to have them done! Here is a before and after photo of the wall. The before is a true "before"--when I hadn't even started working on the insulation or drywall. It's taken from the same angle as the one from today. A huge difference, right?!

Tomorrow, I'm going to put things on the shelves and hopefully get the garage back to normal! I promised a couple of people that I'd make squirrel picnic tables for them, and I can't wait to have my tools back :)

The Best Video I've Seen All Year!

Over the last couple of days, SO MANY PEOPLE have recommended this video to me (which I've shared at the bottom of this post). Being a crazy squirrel lady, I can totally see why. A very high-tech squirrel obstacle course? YES.

It's kind of a long-ish video (about 15 minutes), but it's totally worth the watch! I was a little impatient at the beginning when he was talking about bird feeders, but it really highlights that squirrels are serious problem-solvers.

I love that not only is the video adorable and very clever, it shows that squirrels really do have their own personalities and they are very smart. We currently have about six that are "regulars" around here--squirrels that we've named and that visit us daily or at least frequently, and take nuts from our hands.

It was interesting in the video where the videographer mentions that after several tests to see what nuts squirrels like most, they always chose the walnuts. My squirrels are the same! I've offered peanuts, almonds, hazelnuts, pistachios, pecans... but their very favorite is the walnut.

If I have time to sit outside and hand feed them, then I'll give them the walnuts in the shell (their favorite). Or, if they come to the door and I am busy, I'll just leave them a little handful of the shelled walnuts.

I have a squirrel "lunch box" on my deck that I always keep filled with raw, unsalted peanuts (in the shell) so they can come take them as they wish. And the birds can't get into it.

Anyway, the squirrels all have their own personalities, and it's so fun to see their personalities come out as we get to "know" them. And they are super smart! The whole video shows just how smart squirrels are.

Thank you to all of you who thought of me when you saw this! (I would totally love to make a squirrel obstacle course, but that is just a whole level of skills that I don't have right now--all those contraptions!

An Easter Surprise (so funny!)

This morning, I got up at around 7:00 and got dressed to go run. I went in the kitchen to get some water, and I happened to notice one of my squirrels outside on the deck, eating something that looked odd. I was curious what it was that she was eating, and I grabbed the camera just in case it was something interesting.

Well, it was interesting--it was hilarious.

To backtrack, last night, at around 11:00, Joey started barking. He never barks unless someone is on our property, so we thought it was odd. Just then I got a text from Nathan saying that if I heard someone outside, it was probably "the Easter Bunny".

I forgot about it until this morning, when I realized exactly what it was that the squirrel was eating.

(Here is a photo journal of my ideas as to what was happening...)

So, last night, the "Easter Bunny" left plastic eggs with candy and even money inside of them for Noah and Eli to find when they woke up. Thankfully, I got up early, at around 7:00, otherwise I would have missed out on all these photo ops.

I took a bunch of pictures, and then I collected all the eggs--poor kids!--so that the squirrels wouldn't get ahold of any more. I wish I'd have thought to leave eggs with walnuts inside for my squirrels--next time for sure ;)

I did good with Day 3 of 3  for my challenge today--I'll write a little recap tomorrow and I'm going to set some goals for another 3-day challenge. I really like the short challenge of just three days.

Happy Easter! I hope the squirrels made you smile :)

The Positive Side of "Lockdown"

I'm going to try to keep this short (I say 'try' because I always say that and then my posts are insanely long). Today was the most GORGEOUS day--it got up to 75 degrees and it was sunny.

You know what was SO odd to see, though? People outside. I'm not saying that's bad--I think it's great!--but I've never seen so many people out walking dogs, riding bikes, going for walks, playing ball, etc. Usually, my neighborhood is dead.

Eli had to make a quick video of him catching and then throwing a baseball. It was really cool what his baseball team did in a group chat! Since they can't play ball now, someone suggested a game of "virtual" catch... One boy started it with a video of him throwing the ball (he throws it but you don't see where it goes). He names someone from his team in the video (like, "Hey, Eli, catch!" before throwing).

Then the next video is of that person (we'll say Eli). His video is of him just catching a ball (so it looks like he's catching it from the previous kid) and then throwing it (as if he's throwing it to the next person). Eventually, with all of the videos together, it'll look like they're playing catch. Awesome, right?! When the video is put together, I'll ask the parents if I can share it here.

This whole lockdown has had such an impact on every single part of our lives. Some of it is negative, of course, especially if you or someone you know has contracted coronavirus. However, I've seen so much positive come out of it, too. Like the people who were outside taking advantage of the nicest weather we've had so far this year.

(My kids' schools announced that they won't be going back for this school year... I expected that, but it's still crazy! This whole thing hasn't really hit me yet.)

Every day, my kids have had me drive them to the park to play baseball (they can't walk or ride bikes with all of their equipment). I got a brand new car a few days before all of this craziness started, and I've barely driven it. I have to say that I love not having to drive all the time! I haven't been able to hang out with my family, but I've been video chatting here and there and that's something I never would have done before.

I got a FaceTime call from Luke and Riley a couple of days ago, and it melted my heart. They are so adorable, and getting so big! Luke is potty trained, and Riley basically started potty training herself. They've been playing outside every day.

I did see my brother, Brian a few days ago. He asked me if I wanted some wood that they had leftover from building the house, and I was thrilled! It was odd when he came over because we had to stay a good distance away from each other, but we at least had a conversation.

He told me that he stopped at my parents' house first, and my dad saw all the cedar boards in Brian's truck and told Brian he wanted them for his fence. And Brian gave them to him! I couldn't believe it. I had been so excited to get the boards. The next day, however, my dad said that I could have them because they weren't the right size for his fence. So, my dad brought them over and I talked to him briefly too, from a distance.

I've loved having the time for hobbies. I've been knitting, crocheting, woodworking, sewing... I never used to have much time for it because I was always driving the kids around or working on more important things. A couple of the things I've made are gifts, so I can't share them until I give them to the recipients. But I love how they turned out!

I also made some masks (I think I already posted this?). We can use them for going to the grocery store or other "necessary" places.

(See? This post is long already!)

I'll end with this photo of my squirrel picnic table being used today! Hahaha, not exactly how it was intended, but I believe Rumples is pregnant--she's huge. So, if you can't fit on the bench seat, might as well sit on the table. (She sat there and ate every walnut, and I even brought her another handful, which she ate as well.)

The bench seat reminds me of when I was pregnant with Eli. I went to Olga's with my mom and we were taken to sit in a booth. It never occurred to me that I wouldn't fit! I sat down and my stomach hit the table to the point where I couldn't sit there. (Being 270 pounds at the time didn't help, either, I'm sure.)

This coronavirus has done a number on eating habits, too--good and bad--but I'll save that for another post!
