Indiana, Day 3

I slept horribly last night. The bedroom Jerry and I are staying in at the rental house is right next to the family room, and everyone else stayed up MUCH later than me. Nathan and Shawn (my brother-in-law) were up until 6:30! They were being pretty loud, so I didn't get much sleep at all.

This morning, I went for a run as soon as I got up. Everyone else was still sleeping (except for my parents), so I headed out for the same route as yesterday--three miles. Today, I deliberately tried to run fast. It was really nice outside, and perfect for running!
When I got back to the house, my sister was awake and she said she was a little disappointed, because she was hoping to go for a run with me (I had told her that if she brought running clothes, I'd go with her while we're here). I had only run three miles on my own, so I told her I'd go with her anyway.

She's been doing really well with Couch to 5K training. She's been doing all of her training on the treadmill, and she said she was nervous about going outside to run. I knew she would enjoy it, so I was glad that she wanted to give it a chance. The plan was to run 3/4 mile, then walk 1/4 mile, and repeat one time. Jeanie had been doing her running segments on the treadmill at a 4.5 mph speed (a little slower than a 13:00/mi pace); so I told her that she could set the pace, and I'd just run along for company.

She really liked running outside, and was surprised how quickly the time went by. She went faster than she thought she was, too. These are the run/walk splits:
She planned on a 13-ish pace, but she ended up running under a 12:00/mi pace on the running segments! I find when I run outside, I feel like I'm going slower than I actually am. When I run on the treadmill, I feel like I'm flying, but the pace doesn't reflect that. But anyway, I'm glad she enjoyed running outside, so hopefully she'll feel confident enough to do it again.

This afternoon, my sister asked me if I had a bathing suit to wear in Key West. Um, no. The last bathing suit I bought was a size 12/14. I hate to swim, so I never have a need for a bathing suit. But I started thinking about how I should probably get one for Key West, just in case.

I'm super self-conscious of my thighs and my stretch marks. My thighs have very saggy skin, and my belly still has stretch marks. So I wanted a bathing suit to cover those things, and it's hard to find a cute one that does the job! Jerry and I decided to go to JCPenny, so I could see if they had any suits. Being December, I wasn't hopeful.

It turns out they had just ONE left. And what's kind of funny is that I thought it was pretty cute! I tried it on, and it worked well enough. I'm still self-conscious of my thighs, but if I get really desperate, I think I can pull it off. I will not embarrass myself by posting a picture of me wearing it, but here is what it looks like:
Not a bad suit for being the very last one they had! It has an optional neck strap, so I would certainly use that if I end up wearing it. But anyway, I'm glad to have it in case I need it. My other bathing suit is so baggy that you can seriously see my butt cheek through the leg hole.

We leave for Florida two weeks from tomorrow!! I cannot believe it's coming up so fast. I'm super excited!

    1. Thanks! I'm hoping I don't actually have to wear it, but we'll see ;)

  3. Cute suit! When you have time, check out "swim mini." They are like running skirts but in bathing suit fabric. Covers the topmost part of the thigh. I feel kinda cute in mine, even with all my flaws! :D

Land's End has a lot of them, if you just want to see photos. They are too expensive for normal mortals, but you could see if you liked them.

    1. That's exactly what I need--something to cover the tops of my thighs, but without looking like an old-lady swim suit ;)

  5. It's adorable! I just washed my bathing suit yesterday! I want to parasail (maybe) while we're there, so I need the suit.

  6. Very cute suit! I think it's good you got one - even if you just stick your feet in the water, it's good to have a bathing suit when you're going to a warm climate. And I have a feeling your thighs and stretch marks are not out of the ordinary - everyone has gripes with their body!!

    1. That's what my sister kept telling me--that lots of women wear bikinis with stretch marks and imperfect skin. I've never worn a bikini in my life, so I know I wouldn't be comfortable in one, but I would like to at least get comfortable in a one-piece.

  7. Super cute and I'm sure you'll look great! Your stretch marks are just a sign of how far you have come. I have a lot more that I would like too, but you shouldn't be so self conscious of them.

    1. They're probably not as horrible as I see them--but I've always been hypercritical of my body. I really need to work on that!

  8. That suite is so cute!!! OMG! I run faster outside too even though you can control the speed on a treadmill it just seems so much harder on the treadmill and I feel like I just can't keep going.

    1. I know! I think it's probably because there isn't any wind, and it feels so much hotter on the treadmill than outside. I'm always pouring sweat on the treadmill, but not so much outside.

  9. I second getting a suit from Land's End. They are a little expensive but they cover what needs to be covered without looking like I'm trying to cover, I feel good/confident wearing one, and they last forever. Well worth the money!

That is a cute suit you found!!

  10. Hope you got a better night of sleep last night. I bet you were so exhausted from the night before you slept right through the talking next door. At least I hope so.

LOVE the pink and black swimming suit. It's really cute. I bought a suit a year ago this summer, it's a size 12, and still fits. It's really hard for me to go out in public in it though. Your thighs are NOTHING like MY thighs, since I had 30 extra years of carrying around all that extra tonnage over you. And of course there's my upper arm batwings....well there's no disguising those either. Really, there's no hiding or disguising anything in a bathing suit. I was feeling more confident about the body I am left with until my experience with a couple of second grade girls last week when I was substitute teaching. They were very curious about my "waddle," that extra flesh below my chin (the leftovers from my double chin), and then they laughed as I held my arms up to give them their sight-words, because even though I had a long-sleeved sweater on, it was white and fit tight, and you could see my batwings waving about. That ruined any self-confidence I had built up over these last 20 months of maintenance. I really thought I was normal. I thought those bad spots that are left were not that noticeable and that I could keep them covered up in clothes. But 7-year-olds DO NOT LIE.

Oh well--YOU wear that swimming suit with PRIDE in Florida. You have a great body, and you have earned the right to be proud of who you are and how you look! You look GREAT!

    2. You're right, kids tell it like it is! My kids have asked numerous times about my stretch marks, and why my skin looks "crinkly". ;)

  11. Tell your sister - awesome job!!! I hope she is proud of what she's doing!

That bathing suit is adorable!! I'm sure that you will look great in it. Isn't it crazy how no matter how much better we look we still have issues with feeling self-conscious? In my eyes you look amazing and stretch marks or saggy skin are not what I would notice! Having both stretch marks and saggy skin, I understand your feelings about your body! Just wanted to give you a reminder that you are a healthy, gorgeous woman!

    1. Thank you for that! I'm my own worst critic, I know--I need to get over that.

I'm super proud of my sister--she's doing great!

  12. That swimsuit is just adorable!!! (And I hate pink, so that's saying somethin'.)

I can totally relate to your sister. I did the Couch to 5k on the treadmill as well and was dreadfully fearful of running outside. At first, I thought it was so much harder, but I think that was because I had no idea what my pace was at the beginning and I pushed myself harder than the set pace on the treadmill.

Now it's hard for me to do the treadmill. I love the surroundings of running outside so much more. I am missing it already this winter!

  13. Great post! I just ran on the treadmill for the first time last night and was SO discouraged because I found it so difficult and my pace was so slow even though I thought if I went any faster I would fall off! I've been running outside and like it so much better!

I'll keep it up though, it just feels like when I run on the treadmill I'm even running DIFFERENTLY!

    Super cute bathing suit!

    1. Yes, just remind yourself that it's a different sort of workout; and try not to compare your indoor pace to your outdoor pace. There is usually a pretty big discrepancy in my paces, too!

  14. That is a very cute suit. I said that if I ever reached goal, I'd stick to a one piece too. I'm just to modest. Hope you have lots of fun.

    1. It seems like EVERYBODY wears bikinis now, and it's very hard to find a one piece! The one I bought is actually two pieces, but it doesn't show my belly at all (I'd be way to self-conscious to show that!)
