Okay, I haven't exactly turned 30 yet, but I did commit to something crazy today in the spirit of turning 30 in a couple of weeks. I'm going to be running my first full marathon in 18 weeks. Yes, that would be in May. Did I mention training starts this Monday?
You might remember a few days ago when I said that Jessica and I decided to wait until next spring to run our first 26.2. I was so relieved and content with that idea. And then this morning, I saw on Facebook that Jessica and Alicia threw around the idea of doing a full marathon this May. And of course I couldn't sit around while they were training and NOT do it myself. So I talked to Jessica, and she said we have to do it together--because neither of us wants to do our long training runs alone!
The marathon we'll be running is the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon in Cleveland, OH. My only goal is to finish, without walking. It'd be nice to finish in under 5 hours, but I have no clue how I'm going to be feeling, so I don't have a time goal.
I haven't technically registered yet... it's expensive ($100) so I'm going to ask for that for my birthday :) But I'm hoping that by announcing my intentions here, I'll actually follow through with the registration. A full marathon scares the shit out of me! I keep reminding myself that The Biggest Loser contestants do it, so I certainly can do it, considering I've been running much longer than them.
I went for a run this morning where it actually felt like winter instead of spring. I love running in the cold! If you dress for it, it shouldn't be uncomfortable at all. But check this out:
See what looks like white dust on my shoulders? Yep, that's my sweat. My sweat soaked through the fleece and FROZE to the surface of it--how cool is that?! I only did three miles since I'm going to be running seven miles on Friday.
So today is Wednesday, which means "Wednesday Weigh-in"... and I surprisingly weighed exactly the same as last week, even with the pizza I ate yesterday! The last of the Cookie Butter is gone, which is a good thing (even though it makes my spirit a little sad).
I still haven't binged since before surgery. As of today, it's been 58 days! Even though I haven't binged, I've been taking little bites here and there (namely of Cookie Butter), so my goal this week is to just eat my meals and snacks as usual, without the little nibbles and spoonfuls of stuff. As we learned yesterday, a spoonful of peanut butter is 225 ish calories--yikes!
Oh, and quite a few people have asked me if I've tried Better 'N Peanut Butter. I did try it, and unfortunately, I thought it was TERRIBLE. My sister and I each took one bite and threw the jar in the trash. I do love my PB2 in lots of things, but sometimes I just need "real" peanut butter. My favorite is Smuckers Natural!

You are adorable!
ReplyDeleteHi Katie, I was wondering if you have any advice to deal with portion control. It seems to be my downfall.
ReplyDeleteThanks in advance!
Yay! Your first marathon! I have heard great things about that one!
ReplyDeleteGood for you on not bingeing. I struggle with that!
Wow, how exciting! I put it on my calendar and on the May 21st I expect to have lost 20 more lbs. One size smaller. I want to start running at some point, haven't decided when yet. I need to lose a lot more weight first. Maybe by the time you run you're Marathon I'll be ready to start training for a 5K!
ReplyDeleteAnn
Good luck with your marathon training. That's exciting stuff!
ReplyDeleteI had considered doing the HM in Cleveland, but I don't think I'll be ready by May. I'm super slow, and I'd probably end up on the vehicle. I decided to just work on increasing my mileage for now. The HM in Akron is still up for consideration, though...it's not until September.
That's awesome- you can totally do it! You're so lucky that you have a running mentor. It's definitely something I want to get more into :)
ReplyDeleteThat's so exciting!!! Maybe I shouldn't mention I have an extra jar of cookie butter. ;)
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your marathon! This is the year I'm going to do my first 5K. I haven't ran in 2 years, but I'm starting agian tommrow. Thanks for the extra push of motavation I was looking for you rock!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome Katie!! I can't wait to see your finish line photos.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you should sell t-shirts. We could be your virtual race team and you could make back your registration fee. :)
Smuckers natural is my favorite too!! I'm so proud that you are doing a marathon, seriously you are so inspiring! I never would have been able to run that mile without thinking that in order for me to reach my goals like Katie, that I need to step it up!!! You have a lot of bravery and courage, I want that too!!! :)
ReplyDeleteWAY to go on being binge free for so long. You ROCK!
ReplyDeleteDang, a full marathon!! Can't wait to read about your training and congrats on day 58 :)
ReplyDeleteAhhhh! I am excited and freaked out for you about the marathon, you can totally do it!!! Like you said, if the Biggest Loser contestants can do it you can do it for sure. I think turning 25 was harder on me than turning 30,(I'll be 33 in August). I don't know why but being half of 50 really messed me up! Ha Ha. Oh and the fake peanut butter IS disgusting, or at least I think so. I spent $6 on a jar and threw it away after one taste too. Yuck! : )
ReplyDeleteHow exciting to be training with friends for a marathon! You have experience running other distances, this will just be several of those. It's been on my personal bucket list to do, not necessarily running the whole thing. The older I get (I'm more than 10 years older than you), the more I try to talk myself out of it. The Biggest Loser contestant last season who was over 60 that completed it reminded me that age shouldn't be an excuse, so it's back on my mind again.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why, but remembering how old I am got harder to me after 30. Now I have to do the math!
How exciting You can definitely do it Routing you on over here!!!
ReplyDeleteYou are truly an inspiration!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on committing to your first FULL!! So awesome! And having training buddies makes it so much more fun and the long runs that much easier.
ReplyDeleteAnd I fully agree about the Better n PB. Disgusting. The consistancy was wrong and the taste was NOTHING like PB. Yech.
you can do a full marathon! I am so excited! However..remember 5 hours of straight running is a long time..so if you have to stop and walk..it is ok..the goal is to finish!
ReplyDeleteYAY! I'm doing my first Marathon April 28th - the Country Music one in Nashville. I'm scared too but I've been training on the actual course here in Nashville, so that makes me feel a bit better. I started training on the 2nd, so I'm on my 2nd week so far and have already run 35 miles in Jan already! LOL I have another 6 tomorrow and 14 on Saturday! It's nut how many I'll have each month with this training schedule I'm using.
ReplyDeleteWe'll both be Marathoners this year!!!
Congrats on deciding to run the full marathon! I know you'll be great!!
ReplyDeleteQuestion about running in the cold- when the sweat that turned to ice in turn make you freeze? Or did the fleece still keep you warm?
I am in midwest, and typically I don't run if it's 30 or below that and I'd like to!
Wow!! My goal is to run a full next year, and I'd really like to run the Walt Disney World marathon...they run through all of the parks! So, I'm aiming to be ready by next January. :-) We'll see. I'll have to talk my husband into letting me go to Florida (and WDW no less!!) without him and our son.
ReplyDeleteI registered for this last night! http://runforyourlives.com/
Yeah, I'm a zombie. I couldn't help myself! :-D
Awesome Katie!!! You will be fine doing a marathon!!!! One word of caution, you might want to sign up soon, a lot of marathons sell out pretty quickly, and then you are out of luck!!! Have fun with the training!!!!
ReplyDeleteI was talking to someone the other day that said that "natural" PB was disgusting, because it wasn't sweet!!! It is amazing how far our tastebuds can change, I used to eat "jif" type PB, but now when I try it, I don't like it as well!!!
~Laura
Yay! I'm doing the Cleveland Marathon, too! It'll be my first marathon. I did the HM last year. It's a good course and a huge (but well organized) race. The HM sold out last year, but I don't think the marathon did. If it did, it was at the expo. I'm excited to read about your training!
ReplyDeleteKelly (KJDOESLIFE on SP)
Good luck with your training!
ReplyDeleteI'm excited for you as well! I hope to accomplish that goal in 2013. I wish the HM I signed up for was during my 40th year of life, but I don't know of any yet that I would like to do sooner. I'll have to look!
ReplyDeleteDo you think you would love Peanut Butter & Company's Dark Chocolate Dreams? It's my crack. I had it for the 1st time at PB & Co. in NYC. Listen to this: the dark chocolate peanut butter, cherry preserves (with huge whole cherries) and shredded coconut on fresh white bread! YUM! My husband had the cinnamon raisin kind with cream cheese and sliced apples on white. Delicious as well!
Way to go for signing up! Thanks for your mention of sparkpeople. i looove that site. i've been counting calories, this is my third day. My first day I watched what i ate and limited my portions and was STILL over and realized WOW!! This is my second day of no pop. I ALLLLLLLWAYS have a coke in the morning and with lunch. Im happy.. but remember that headache you had after you tossed coffee? Yup. I got one. lol and not to mention feeling starved because im not use to the lesser of calories yet. I can't wait until im use to it. Im thankful i found your blog.
ReplyDeleteYour inspiring!
@Frickin' Fabulous at 40
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the Peanut Butter & Co's products!! I have the Dark Chocolate Dreams, the White Chocolate, and the Cinnamon Raisin. The White Chocolate one is my FAAAAVORITE.
I'm so glad I found your blog! I'm in the midst of losing 100 pounds, so it's great to see those went before me and be reminded that success does (and will!) happen from hard work.
ReplyDeleteI found you through pinterest, and have spent 2 days off and on reading your blog, your story, and how far you have come. I am so impressed, and so inspired. I have half a dozen "before" photos. I do not have 100 lbs to lose, but 71 lbs is not that far off.
ReplyDeleteI ran cross country in jr high. I will be 29 this year. I have decided that by the time I am 30, I WILL weigh my goal weight.
I have already started running again. Sure, that mile might have been 80% walked, and it may have taken me 17:25 to do it, but I DID IT. It is a start.
Thank you.
How exciting to be doing your first full marathon!! I'm registered for the Half in Indy in May. I'm sooo not going to be able to run the whole thing, but it has been the #1 best motivator to get me running. i'm progressing SUPER slow, but I am progressing. unfortunately, i'm much slower to progress than you were when you first started. It's taken me over 8 weeks to get to the half mile point, and it's An UGLY slow half mile at that. But, I'm gonna keep plugging along, and even if I have to walk over half of that dang mini-marathon I'm gonna cross the damn finish line!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering if you could do a post on what to wear while running for different weather. I seem to shy away from going out during the winter in Buffalo because I never know how to dress & I dont want to get to far from home & be hot or freezing.
ReplyDeleteAnd way to go on being Binge free. I still havent gotten past 2 weeks without having at least a mini binge. It is such a hard habit to break.
Deb
Yes, Better N' Peanut Butter is terrible. My sil likes it, so I gave the jar to her. I'd rather just have the real thing every once in a while. Peanut Butter and Co. is awesome! I love the maple one. Soooo good!
ReplyDeleteBest of luck with your training!
ReplyDeleteCleveland was my first marathon too! It's flat and fun. Just go out slow and take it easy and enjoy yourself :)
