Curls

I am so glad I didn't chicken out on posting that journal entry yesterday. I loved reading all of your kind comments, and I thank you for sharing your own stories about your struggles with binge eating. If nothing else, we've learned that we aren't alone!

This morning, I did Pete's ABC circuits again. I really wanted to just have a lazy morning, but I knew I had to get it done. I made plans to meet up with Renee and Jessica for coffee/tea mid-morning. I've really been struggling with what to eat for breakfast lately, which is very odd for me--usually breakfast is a no-brainer, because I have thousands of ideas in my head. But since starting Weight Watchers, I've had to re-think my food choices. A typical bowl of my oatmeal and toppings would be over 10 points!

Sadly, my almond butter is 6 points per serving, which bums me out. That's actually one of the reasons I quit doing Weight Watchers a couple of years ago; I missed my nut butter. I have a container of Justin's chocolate hazelnut spread that I've been wanting to eat, but haven't been willing to spend 5 points on. I still haven't caved in to the peanut butter, however. Only four weeks and three days to go ;)

For any of you who may be doing Weight Watchers, what are some of your favorite breakfast foods? I'm open to suggestions (but I despise yogurt, any and all of it). I usually eat eggs for lunch. I never have a problem coming up with something for dinner, either. It's the perfect time of year for Pumpkin Cranberry Apple Baked Oatmeal for breakfast, but it's 10 points!

After I showered this morning, I was about throw my hair in my usual go-to braid, but I didn't want to meet up with Renee and Jessica always looking like a slob. So I figured I would take the time to do my hair (which involves blowing it dry and then straightening it, a very long process because my hair is long and thick). I have no idea what made me think of it, but I thought it would be funny to wear my hair curly.

I have naturally curly hair, but I never, EVER wear it like that. I either throw it in a braid, a messy bun, a ponytail, or, when I'm going out and have to look decent, I straighten it. I felt like such a nerd while I messed with my hair this morning--putting gel in it (do people even use gel anymore?), "scrunching" it, and then flipping my head upside down to blow it dry. I'm sure there are better ways to style curly hair these days, but I have no clue! The last time I wore my hair curly was probably in high school.

Jerry was getting out of the shower when he saw it, and he kind of flipped out a little: "What the heck? How did you make your hair that curly?" I told him my hair has always been this curly, don't you remember? He didn't. Hahaha. But he loved it, and I was surprised, because I told him I was only doing it that way to be funny. It was certainly easier to do than straightening my hair, that's for sure... but I think it looks better straight.
So I went to meet with Jessica and Renee--I thought they would laugh when they saw me, but they said they liked it too! Oh well, I guess I have options now ;)

Tomorrow is my long run, and it's a step-back week (mileage is cut)--I "only" have to run 12 miles! And I'm going to have some company for a portion of it. The local newspaper is writing a story about my Ragnar team, and they want to come get photos of me running.

I sent them the pictures that Stephanie took, because let's be honest, I have make-up on and my hair done in those ones ;)  But the reporter didn't want to use them (not sure why), so a photographer is going to come take pictures tomorrow. And I will NOT have my hair done, or make-up on or be dressed to impress... I have to actually run 12 miles, so I'll be practical. It's supposed to rain, too--but after running 20 miles in the rain last Friday, 12 should be a piece of cake.

  1. Katie! I LOVE the curls!

I can relate. I have naturally curly hair, too. It's actually super easy because all I do is brush it after my shower, put mousse in it, scrunch it and let it air dry. I'll straighten my bangs sometimes, but other than that it takes all of 5 minutes to do!

    Have a great run, tomorrow!

  2. I an partial to curls, being a Curly Q myself, but in all honesty it looks beautiful.

  3. I wish I had enough curl in my hair to do that. I think you look great with it:) I think a ponytail with it curly would be cute too.
Love your blog. You are so inspirational! Keep up your great work and give yourself credit more often:)

  4. I like it better curly too!

  5. OMG! If I had hair that naturally beautifully curly, I'd wear it that way a lot!

My go to breakfast is oat cereal with blueberries. I rarely used to eat cereal, but now I find it easy, brainless, and tasty. I like Kashi Heart to Heart and also Barbara's Oat Squares. I put about 1/4 cup of blueberries in it. I love rice milk, so use that over it. Blueberries can be expensive out of season, but since I don't use a ton, they last a week, and I figure I'm worth it! Plus with all the anti-oxidants, they're great for you.

Other good ones: nut butter on an English muffin. Or toast a muffin, then put an ounce of swiss cheese sprinkled over it and then microwave for about 20 seconds. I also love peanut butter toast, but I know that's a no-no for you right now. Pepperidge farm makes really cool bread for toast now -- pumpkin spice, apple caramel, as well as the usual cinnamon raisin. One or two slices make a great breakfast, though a bit low on protein. Some mornings I'm late and will grab a banana and string cheese or a hard-boiled egg. Or a Luna bar (peppermint chocolate is to die for).

Hope you get more good ideas!

  6. Can you tell me a little about your garmin. I want one but not sure about what price they run. Do you have any suggestions on ones you've tried?

  7. HA! I have curly hair too but it's ALWAYS in a ponytail!

As for weight watcher's breakfast - very often I will do 1 egg plus 1 eggwhite whipped up really well. Then I do a breakfast scramble with tons of veggies - whatever is on hand. This morning I had tri colored bell peppers and some carrot shreds. I sautee the veggies first - sometimes if I'm feeling spunky I'll make one slice of bacon first so I can sautee the veggies in the bacon drippings (costco has very low sodium bacon and I LOVE it). The veggies are all free - one slice of bacon is 1 point and the egg plus one white is only 2 points. That is a 3 point breakfast - I'll add some fruit for a carb and I'm good to go. On running mornings I make a bowl of oatmeal and a piece of turkey sausage. The oatmeal fills me up without making me want to puke on a run. Oh and by the way - I LOVE your hair curly!

  8. I like your hair either way. Personally, I like curls because it's easier. Just scrunch & go! I actually used to perm mine to get it to look like yours in that picture, for the ease of care. (I stopped because it is expensive to get a perm!)

  9. I have curly hair too. I used to wear it up a lot, but I cut it short so it doesn't go up. I never straighten it because I'm too lazy! yes people use gel! I currently use smoothing cream, mousse, and gel. your hair here looks much better than mine does normally!

  10. I'm on Weight Watchers too. I don't know what your total point limit for the day is so my comment may not be helpful if 10 points takes a big chunk out of your total points. However, I've started to allow myself bigger point values for meals, as long as it's healthy, filling food. My guess is that oatmeal would fill you up until lunch so spending 10 points would be okay? And maybe add a fruit to your morning if you need something to tie you over until lunch? Just a thought. All the best.

  11. I LOVE your curly hair. I have a cousin whose hair is curly like that and I've been jealous, oh I don't know....always!

  12. I eat a Western Alternative English Muffin (2 points plus) and 1 Tbsp of Peter Pan whipped peanut butter (2 points plus) or eggs and veggies scrambled and wrapped in a 1 points plus tortilla, sometimes I add cheese or avocado.

    ReplyDelete
  13. so jealous that your hair curls like that! Its amazing!!!!

  14. I am on WW, and I tend to either have eggs and salsa (or mushrooms and tomatoes) with 1 oz of shredded cheese, or a one egg french toast with 1 tbsp of maple syrup. When I want cereal I have multigrain cheerios or another fairly high fibre 3 pt cereal. If I want more protein I'll have 1 oz of cheese and maybe a slice of raisin toast with my cereal. Most of my breakfasts are around 5-8 pts.

I have curly hair too, and only just started to straighten it again, I was getting tired of the curly look (after 3 yrs of no straightening).

  17. Katie, for breakfasts, I love the following two recipes...maybe you might like one of them!! (I'm not sure of the points though, sorry)

    Protein Pancakes: (makes 8-10)
    12 egg whites
    1 cup quick oats
    1 cup cottage cheese
    1.5 teaspoon cinnamon
(mix well, ladle onto griddle and cook like pancakes)
I top w/apple butter or apple sauce
    Per pancake:

Breakfast Cookies - no flour, no sugar, and no dairy added!

I have also added flax seed, chia, or hemp hearts for extra protein and eat 2 of these with some fruit for breakfast!!

    ps...love your hair!

  18. I always just throw mousse in my hair after I wash it. It's also very thick, wavy and slightly curly. I tried straightening it but like it natural. It's also easier. :) So I love your curls!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I love the curls in your hair! I have the opposite problem. Mine is thick but stick straight! I have to use a ton of hairspray to even get it to hold for an hour! It all relaxes out and is straight again. But however you want to wear you hair you look great!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I like your hair like that, but I like it straight too. :) You have pretty hair. My hair is also naturally curly, and like you I often have it pulled. I rarely straighten it because it just frizzes out again when I get hot or sweaty and it's always so humid here. One of my fav breakfasts is one of the lenders thin bagels (I like everything or just plain wheat) and I cook an egg and then put a slice or two of provolone (I get the ultra thin 40 calories per slice) on it and have a sandwich. Sometimes I have turkey bacon on it. This morning I just had plain steel cut oats with a pat of butter and an orange. I love apple butter and I'll have that on toast sometimes and I love cottage cheese with blueberries or strawberries mixed in.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Love the curls! I do a banana pancake with 1 banana, 1/4 cup oats, and 1 egg. You kind of whip the banana with the egg, and then add the oats. Cook like a pancake 5 minutes in a frying pan on medium, and then flip. It's good plain, or with a little bit of peanut butter, which melts and ends up spreading out a lot, so you don't need much. I also do smoothies with a lot of ice, almond milk, and protein powder, which ends up not being too bad calorie wise.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yeah I have curly/straight options too. Men love curly hair. Waayyyy sexy! I use infusium 23 leave in treatment to make my hair curly. I decant into a squirt bottle--it's like water consistency--spray it all over, lightly scrunch the hair. If you touch your hair too much, it makes it frizzy. Do your make up now or wait twenty minutes. Bend over, blow out with diffuser. It's soft and curly, not hard and crunchy.

Also you need to try PB2. It will change your life. Forever.

    1. Katie has a bunch of PB2 recipes! That's how I found it! And I know what you mean about frizzy- if I touched my hair too much or God forbid it was humid out, hello Diana Ross!

  23. I have the exact same hair type and I too would rather straighten my hair than leave it curly. My breakfast choice is not exciting, cereal and a banana. I work very early and don't have a lot of time to spend on breakfast.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I have the same type of curls as you... Got them from my Dad's side... And my mom always whined when I straighten it that 'people would pay hundreds of dollars for your hair!'. Now, I embrace it and the options! I think you look great with it curly and should do it more often!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Those protein pancakes listed above sound amazing! Many of my ideas have already been posted- which is great :) But, I also like to make a slice of whole wheat toast, 1/2 tablespoon smart balance spread, and 1/4-1/2 cup berries all smooshed together. Then, I top the buttered toast with the berry mix and it's a "cheap" and light pastry :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They are delicious, Allison!!! They are filling and the topping choices are unlimited!! I hope you give them a try and like them!! :)
I'm so going to try your idea of smooshing berrys on the buttered toast... sounds divine! Glad you shared that!

  26. Hi Katie

I am a brand new runner (wanna be anyway) I find your story truly inpirational and can't wait to learn more about how you lost all the weight and became a runner - my two goals at the moment! :)

  27. Love the curls!! My hair is naturally curly and it never looked better than right after Charlie was born, but after going grey, it changed and was straightening out in the back while remaining curly up front. When it was long I did use the flat iron but seeing myself with straight hair was totally foreign and I felt like I stuck out like a sore thumb (probably exactly how you felt going curly!). I pretty much did the same thing you do, so it's easy and maintenance free, but my short style is even easier! No KNOTS!!!

As for breakfast, I am a carb queen, so I do the whole wheat double fiber bread with pb or apple butter.

  28. Hi Katie,
I have been pretty much lurking... :) First- thank you for your post the other day about binging... I could see myself in some of the emotions you expressed. I still at times struggle with those emotions and have to keep myself "in check". I have lost almost 40 lbs. since Jan. so I can relate to the daily struggles you describe. Second- your hair looks really lovely curly! Lately I have been allowing my hair to be more natural myself but mine does not have as much curl as yours does- it is nice not o have to "fight" it every morning isn't it?
As for your ideas for breakfast- what about flat bread thins with laughing cow cheese and maybe a slice of lo fat turkey? I have found that for me (I count calories) oatmeal is by far the most affective breakfast for me when I want to lose- but I use a good quality /gluten free oatmeal by Red Mill - a little fruit and/or lo fat milk and I'm good through lunch! :)

  29. I have naturally curly hair also and I just wash, mousse, curl spray and go. Until a few years ago when I got the Brazilian straightening thing I didn't even own a brush. I love my hair straight but I do not have the patience to do it so it is 99.9% up in a messy bun. It is only straight when I get it cut/colored. I wish I had the patience because right now it is dyed rainbow....yes I am 38 but why not right?

  30. Darling! I was putting gel in my hair this morning and I'm pretty hip. All the cool girls are going curly. You are adored in Virginia!

  31. I have the exact same hair and a rarely wear it curly. The funny thing is that my boyfriend loves it curly and even asked me to wear it that way last year on his birthday lol. I prefer it straight... I feel much more confident in my looks when it's straight for some reason.

Also, my go-to breakfast lately has been overnight oats. I am loving them right now... my combination is: 1/2 cup of oats, 1/4 cup of milk, one small container of vanilla yogurt, tbls of flax then leave it in the fridge all morning... in the morning i top it with a tbsp of coconut. So good!

  32. I'm hooked right now of homemade egg mcmuffins.. if you use light english muffins, 1 egg and canadian bacon it's only 4-5 points depending on the brand of canadian bacon you use.. .(I don't use cheese and I don't miss it at all) and very filling.. I make a batch up on the weekend and (h)eat them up during the week. Quick, easy and satisfying..

  33. Love your hair!

I love scrambled eggs loaded with veggies for breakfast. Pretty filling and not too high in points.

Another thing you could do, since most fruits are "free" is have mixed fruit with a little bit of fat free whipped topping (really low in points) and a piece of toast (I personal love Bagel Thins). That would be about 4-5 pts, I think.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Love the curls! I'm a curly girl too; and also too lazy to straighten! My go to breakfast is eggs and toast, so nothing original!

  36. I'm on WW and have a whole post dedicated to breakfast ideas: http://bethsjourney.com/whole-foods-weight-watcher-breakfast-ideas/

Lately I've been having steel cut oats (4 pts/cup) with pumpkin, cinnamon, and half a banana. I usually add cottage cheese or egg whites for some extra protein, but it's super pointsplus friendly, and filling!

  37. I bet your hair gets real curly when it gets wet huh? Those pictures of you running for the paper will show you with your new curly "do", if it rains! Be sure to share the link with us when the article is in the paper. I love it curly. I have fought curls all my life. But now I just wish I had some hair. Mine was always thick and full. But when I hit 60, I started losing it. I read that is very common, even in women! Who knew? It's sad. Enjoy your youth and that beautiful head of hair!!!

  38. Thanks for inquiring about breakfasts because I'm loving all the replies! One of my faves is a smoothie that I just recently learned how to make. I call it my Magic Smoothie. Just do a search for it on my site, if you want.! Cheers~

  39. oh, I forgot about ww bfast ideas! Thomas' english muffin (light), with egg whites and slice of cheese (2pt cheddar) = 6 points + and super filling. I'm also obsessed with smoked salmon and toast!

  40. Love the Curls!!! You totally rock them! I'm so jealous, my hair is naturally straight and I can't get any curls.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Your curls look beautiful, Katie!! I too, have curly/wavy hair, and went quite awhile blow-drying and straightening, but my husband would ask me to sometimes just leave it curly. So for the past few years, I've been switching back and forth - depending on how much time I have in the morning, and what the weather's like! If it's very humid or rainy, I definitely go with the curls, because that's the way it'll end up! At first it felt weird, but now I'm comfortable and like it both ways :) I like DesignLine curl lock, because it doesn't get crunchy. I usually just spray a little water and scrunch again the next day, and it still looks good.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Your hair looks nice curly! At least you have options now that you know your husband likes it!

As for breakfasts, well, my favorite has always been an egg sandwich (5 pts). 1 slice cheese (1 pt), 2 slices bread (2 pts), 1 egg white (0 pts), 1 whole egg (2 pts), and spray butter ( 0 pts)... with salt and pepper of course. Another one that has become my favorite is a poached egg on toast (2 pts). Poach the egg then put it on 1 slice of toast with butter spray and salt and pepper. If you like sunny side up eggs, this is great without the added oil or butter calories. I don't like "frying" my eggs in cooking spray, just not the same. But the poached egg satisfies that craving. I love eggs! My husband hates them and makes fun of me all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Wow Katie, I think you always look adorable but I love your hair curly! Yes people do still use gel :)! I have naturally curly hair too but I never dry it I just put gel in it and scrunch it and go! I don't know if you can do that but it would make your morning a little quicker!

  44. Love the hair.

I eat an oatmeal, packet Protien Shake, Veggie egg white omelt cereal with half a cup of milk.

  45. I have recently started wearing my hair curly and I have the same feelings about it! I get so complimented but I don't really believe it! Ha ha.

I do weight watchers and my standby breakfasts are: Trader Joes Oatmeal Complete (brown sugar) which is 5 pts a packet and fills me up.

I also do 2 hard boiled eggs (2) and raspberries or strawberries (0).

High fiber english muffin (3), egg (2), and 1 slice RF american cheese (1) for a sandwich.

Total raisin bran and fat free milk (4 and 2 I believe)

Hope it helps :) Breakfast is ROUGH for me because I don't like eggs very much!

  46. You are so lucky to have the best of both worlds when it comes to your hair. I try to straighten mine but it just turns frizzy after a few hours. Do you put anything special on it when you do straighten it?

I just usually mousse it, scrunch it, and let it dry then put it up in a messy ponytail or clip. I wish I had short straight hair like all the other Moms around here (they wear it so cute) but when my hair is short I look like Annie. =/

    ReplyDelete
  47. I love your hair curly. I am SO jealous!!! My hair is stick straight and takes FOREVER to curl and then only holds the curl for what seems like 5 minutes before the curl fall out and its straight again!.

I found this website on Pinterest. This lady has lots of good and easy recipes that she has figured out the WW points for each recipe. I have tried several recipes and loved them.

  48. Make Ahead Egg McMuffins:(12 ea @ 5-6 points +)

    8 egg whites
    4 eggs
    12 Weight Watchers english muffins
1-2 cups total of cut up veggies like onions, garlic, peppers, grated zuchinni (whatever makes you happy) cooked until softened
    12 slices Canadian Bacon (cooked)
    spices to your taste

I mix the eggs and veggies together and put into a big pan. Then bake in a 350* oven for 20 min or so. Cut them into 12 portions and put one portion on each muffin with a slice of bacon. Cool and wrap them and put them in the freezer and pull one out whenever I feel like having one, defrost it in the microwave and sometimes put a peice of cheese on it. They are about 5 points, and an easy "on the go" kind of breakfast.

  49. If I`m not eating eggs for breakfast than I eat homemade granola with milk. I`ve been toying around with the recipe lately, the latest being a peanut butter cookie granola(http://thenagamonster.com/peanut-butter-cookie-granola/)
I think that regular oatmeal looks good and is so good for you, but I can`t get past the mushy texture:(

  50. Katie, your hair looks beautiful! I have curly hair too and also NEVER wear it that way. I also never take the time to flat-iron so it usually ends up in a ponytail or bun - every single day!! :) I wish I could justify spending the $$$ on those hair straightening treatments. I'm curious about them but they are SO expensive. I'm racking my brain on breakfast for you .... what about protein smoothies? I'm not sure how that falls in terms of points. I've also heard about these pumpkin pancakes that are LITERALLY just pumpkin puree and a couple of other ingredients - no flour or anything. I'm going to look into them.

  51. Curly hair is great! I used to have really thick and naturally curly hair, but when I was pregnant with my second son, my hair got a lot thinner and will not hold curl at all. I really miss having that quick option...so enjoy it!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I have naturally wavy/curly hair and the easiest way to style it for me is to blow dry it without scrunching or product, I don't try and keep the curl intact at all at this point I just dry it with my head upside down (for volume atthe roots)- and then when it is dry I flip uprigth and take a spray bottle of water and just spritz my hair so it is a little damp and then schrunch it and I find I get great non-frizzy curls and I also don't get that wet separated look I get from using gel which I don't tend to like very much. Easy peasy and it looks great.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I HIGHLY recommend the Weight Watchers brand oatmeal. They sell it in their stores and it comes in a package of 6 single servings. I REALLY like the brown sugar/cinnamon variety, mixed with blueberries and bananas/raisins. At only 3 points plus, it starts my morning off wonderfully! :)

  55. I love the hair.

  56. Embrace the curls! I think it looks great, personally. I fought my curls my whole life and spent the last 6+ years "burning" it with a straightening iron. After I had my daughter I decided I didn't have the time or additional energy to mess with it anymore, so I chopped a good 4 inches off (to start fresh) and am growing it out. I can't get over how much easier it is...I get out of the shower, scrunch it dry with a towel, but a bit of "Be Curly" (Aveda) on it and I'm done. As it dries I'll shake it out and separate the curls but my entire shower, drying off & getting dressed, makeup (if I wear it) takes me 20 minutes. That's a crapload better than when I used to blowdry my hair then flat iron it.

Anyway, I think you look great :)

  57. 1. I absolutely LOVE the curls! It looks really good on you! I have curly hair too, when I fix it that way, and I do it just like you described! I have an Aussie "Scrunch" spray that works well too.

    2. For Weight Watcher breakfasts, my normals are:
Puffed Wheat cereal (you can eat a large volume for low points) with fruit
    Cheerios with fruit
    Egg and cheese on toast
    Green monster smoothie

    ReplyDelete
  58. I love your hair curly! I have horribly straight hair that doesn't do anything, even gotten it permed to have hair like you. Love it! I don't do weight watchers, but I have to eat on the run(I love sleep, so I chose sleeping in and eating on the way to work @6AM) But my breakfast of choice is smoothies. Wild berries

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think it's hilarious that you asked if people still use gel - my hair is also naturally curly and I use mousse and gel and hairspray every time I wash it and scrunch it and let it air dry. Otherwise it's a frizzy gross mess! haha

I guess I'm stuck in a time-warp but that's just how I've always done my hair and how it looks the best! Curls are cute on you! I don't even own a hair dryer or straightener! haha

  60. For breakfast I have been doing 1/4 C oatmeal made with milk & half of a banana mashed up with cinnamon or pumpkin butter.

I also will have a bagel thin (3) with a slice of american cheese (2) and a hard boiled egg(2). That actually tends to keep me satisfied until lunch.

Another that amazingly keeps me satisfied is a bagel thin with anywhere from 1tsp to 1Tbsp of Nutella (I don't use much because it is so high in pp) and a banana sliced put on top and eaten like a sandwich
