Thanks so much for all the great book suggestions! I am a super slow reader, so those suggestions will probably last me a lifetime. For those of you that asked, I am on Goodreads. It may look like I don't use it very often, but the truth is, I just don't finish very many books. I start new books all the time, but if it doesn't hold my interest enough for me to want to continue reading it rather than watch TV or read blogs, or other distractions, then I just don't finish. The perfect example of a book that held my attention is The Hunger Games. I absolutely LOVED that series!
Why does it look like his half is bigger?! I was SURE I took the bigger half... |
Jerry and I split a huge cookie, and once I took a bite, it wasn't very good. I shouldn't have finished it, but that is such a bad habit of mine! I wasted those calories on a cookie that didn't even taste good.
That night set me back this week as far as my weight goes. As of yesterday morning, my weight was the same as it was on Wednesday, despite the fact that I ate pretty well from Wed-Fri. I'm back at it today, so hopefully I'll at least see a little drop when I "officially" weigh in on Wednesday.
My mom bought "cheese" in a can for the kids. I've never understood the appeal of that stuff! It looked so disgusting, but my kids think it's awesome. They thought they were cool to spray the cheese right into their mouths. Yuck!
The fireworks display that the park put on was actually pretty impressive. Jerry and I sat together on the floor of the boat to watch, and it was nice to just be together. Thankfully, the kids had a good time so they weren't complaining non-stop, like I expected. The sunset was gorgeous, too:
We got home a little after 11 p.m., and Jerry had to work on Sunday, so we went right to bed.
Today was technically the first day of my running "break". Remember how I said I was going to take a whole week off? Well, I only lasted until 2:00 pm today, lol. I started to feel a binge coming on, and I knew that if I ran, I would stay on track. So I promised myself that if I felt my knee hurt in the slightest, I would stop.
I had to do the dreadmill again, since Jerry was at work and the kids were here with me. I turned on Season 10 of The Biggest Loser (Ada's season) on Netflix--the marathon episode. It was different to watch it this time, now that I kind of "know" Ada (even if it's just by phone and Internet). It was such a motivating episode to watch while I was running! Seeing her run her fastest mile on the treadmill and then run a 4:38 marathon was super inspiring. Watching that made the time on the treadmill fly by for me today.
Today's run was scheduled to be 50 minutes easy with 8 pick-ups. So I set my Garmin for 5 mins 30 seconds of running easy, and then a 30 second sprint... repeated 8 times, and then a 2 minute cool down. I did my sprints slower than last time. I did the first one at 10 mph and it just felt too fast--my muscle cramped up a little, so I took it down to 9 mph and 8 mph for a couple of them. It looked like this when I was done:
After running, I felt a million times better, and my knee didn't bother me at all. Lately, it only seems to hurt when I run outside. So I successfully avoided a binge, which is a big accomplishment!
Nice work in diverting a binge!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea to rent season 10 on Netflix - I kind of want to see that episode again too, now that we kind of know Ada. Plus, I remember being inspired the first time around by her run.
Looked like a beautiful day on the boat! Hope all is well :-)
Sounds like a happy family life summer! :)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on successfully skipping a binge! I was just thinking today that I need to keep myself busy from the time I get home from work to the time my husband gets home. That is my dangerous time where I will eat all of my calories for dinner and then when my husband gets home ... actually eat dinner. Ugh. I'm working on it though.
ReplyDeleteSounds like the fireworks were a fun time! I hate when I eat something that isn't that tasty ... I'm getting better at that though too. :)
I do the same thing! Eat a bunch of stuff before dinner, and then I eat dinner on top of it. A bad habit for sure.
DeleteCongratulations on avoiding a binge. You really have to know yourself to see it coming and stop it from happening.
ReplyDeleteGood for you, Katie!! I finally got back on SparkPeople today after a long break, but reading your posts every day totally inspired me to get back on track. I DO THE EXACT SAME THING WHEN I BITE INTO A JUST SO-SO SWEET!! Ugh! What a waste of calories but sometimes it's just so hard to stop!
ReplyDeleteCheese in a can? Blech! I agree. John always likes to take it w/ us camping. Why do I even allow myself to put that crap on a cracker?!
I am SO IMPRESSED with your running (as always) - I sort of think the interval training is way over my head in the math department, though! I have no idea how you end up nailing it every time.
My teenaged daughter left for camp yesterdy. The one snack required (only for camp) is "squirt cheese" and club crackers. It goes back to when I was in high school - you only got squirt cheese for road trips and camp. Perhaps this explains my hips, just a bit. [And tell your boys squirting it directly in your mouth is fine - just shove a cracker in there after.]
ReplyDeleteDang it. Now I want some.
Haha, I love spray cheese. I never buy it though because it's kinda expensive.. not to mention how unhealthy it is!
ReplyDeleteI was shocked at how expensive it was! The name brand one was over $5. My mom bought them the Kroger brand, which was like $3.50 or something--still way too expensive me to buy. That's what their grandparents are for, I guess ;)
DeleteI HATE when I waste my calories on something meh! I read a lot, but I'm a slow reader. I get a lot of time to read waiting for the subway, riding home etc. All my friends are shocked it's taken me over a week to read the 2nd 50 Shades book!
ReplyDeleteI don't understand how some people read multiple books in a week... I always take about 3-4 weeks to get through an average-sized book!
DeleteYou are doing so well!
ReplyDeleteAs far as kids and school - I have 5 kids and 3 we home school, I am not looking forward to school starting again - the time needs to slow the heck down! :)
I don't know if anyone else has suggested this yet, but if you liked The Hunger Games, you should read Divergent! It's similar to The Hunger Games, and so so good. You'll love it.
ReplyDeleteI requested that at the library :) It seems to be popular, I'm number #24 on the list!
DeleteI used to eat cheese in a can as a kid and now the thought of it makes me literally throw up in my mouth! So disgusting!! That stuff should be illegal. Another thing we did as kids was pour like a cup of sugar in a baggie and then add a packet of koolaid mix and ate it - THE WHOLE THING!! Ugh!!! My stomach hurts just thinking about it!
ReplyDeleteOhmygoodnessgracious, I cannot even imagine the thought of the Koolaid mix + sugar! I LOVE sweets, but that would be too much for even ME ;) I bet it was fun to eat that as a kid, though!
DeleteI LOVE LOVE LOVE cheese in a can. It's dangerous to have it in my house.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing your stats. I'm such a stats and graph nerd. If you liked the Hunger Games, check out Gregor the Overlander - same author as Hunger Games. Yes, it's YA too, but it's really fun. Your boys might like it too.
ReplyDeleteI actually really enjoy YA books--probably because it normally takes me forever to read books, but the YA ones are quick reads for most people. I will check that one out :)
DeleteSo happy you figured out how to avoid a binge. I go shopping when I feel a binge coming on. Shopping is not nearly as healthy as running and it costs too much. My boys still love that cheese in a can. Still! And they're all grown up. Yuck! I'm not much of a cheese fan -- except when it's melted on top of pizza!
ReplyDeleteI've decided to make the Biscoff cheesecake in a pan for our 4th of July party tomorrow. Hopefully I'll try a thin sliver of it and everybody else will eat it all so I'm not tempted by leftovers. Anyway that's my plan.
Cheese in a can YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, my kids like it too. Food squirting out of a can is pretty exciting. Maybe someday carrots will come that way lol. My favorite anything out of a can is Reddi-wip!
Good job avoiding the binge! Keep up the good work! Wooot!
Kate, thanks for sharing. I found out about your blog after reading the July/August 2012 issue of Fitness Magazine. I really enjoyed reading your recent post. I like how you are learning to really keep things in balance. Its very encouraging! I plan on visiting often!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for reading, Monique! :)
DeleteGetting away from the snacks and running always helps me avoid a binge. If I eat those calories, it's like the run never happened!
ReplyDeleteps - Are you on Team Peeta or Team Gale? I'm totally on Team Peeta.
That's a hard question! Based on the book, I was more on Team Peeta. But I really didn't like the actor who played him in the movie, so I kind of switched over based on that ;)
DeleteI can honestly say I have never had cheese in a can! I'd rather be able to sink my teeth into a nice hunk of sharp cheddar or mozzarella...
ReplyDeleteKatie, I thought of you this morning. I made banana bread last night for this mornings breakfast. Usually that's not a binge food for me, so I thought it would be cool, but then I went and mixed in chocolate chips which ruined the whole "non-binge" thing it had going for it.
ReplyDeleteThe awesome part? As I was inhaling my second piece I bit into the saltiest non-mixed portion of the batter, stuck in the middle of my bread. I have been baking for years and have never had that happen! It totally ruined the banana bread for me and delivered me from countless calories. So, my sub-par cooking skills totally saved the day ;-)
Also, the hubby loves cheese in a can. I don't get it either.
Ooooh, chocolate chips will turn any non-binge food into a huge temptation for me ;) That's awesome that you didn't stray too far off track before biting into the unmixed batter!
DeleteLol i use to eat cheese n a can over wheat thins ....those were the days! Good job on ur workout n ur boat ride sounded nice.
ReplyDeleteWheat thins or chicken-in-a-biskit crackers -- OMG that brings back memories. Special occasions (seriously?) only...what was I thinking?
DeleteI've never understood cheese in a can, but my sister has always loved it. She will put it on just about anything. BLEH! haha
