After lounging in my pajamas for way too long this morning, I did the leg exercises that the doctor gave me yesterday. It actually took much longer than I thought--about 45 minutes--to get through all the exercises. Most of the exercises require me to do 3 sets of repetitions on each leg.
After I showered, I knew I was going to go stir-crazy sitting in the house, so I asked my friend Amber if she wanted to meet us at the park so the kids could play. She has a boy a few months younger than Noah and a three-year old little girl. The three boys together (my two and her's) are completely rambunctious. I don't know where they get all that energy!
They had a blast at the park looking at crawfish in the creek.
Eli kept begging me to go buy him some salt water taffy. Stupid Food Network... he was watching it last night and they showed how the salt water taffy is made. I thought he'd forget about it by morning, but he has a crazy-good memory when it comes to reminding me to buy him things. But the last thing that boy needs is more candy, so I told him not today.
Speaking of him and candy, yesterday we stopped at Party City to get invitations for Noah's birthday party. Eli's face totally lit up when we went by the candy section. I bet this is what Heaven looks like in his dreams :) I took his picture in front of all the candy:
To prove I'm not a totally mean mom, I did let each of the boys pick out 15 of the 15/$1 candies. I wish this store was closer to us, because it would be awesome when I just want to buy one small piece of candy. If I have a craving for licorice, for example (
But I could totally get carried away there, too...
Speaking of cravings, I had a totally random craving today for my cold "almond joy" oats, so I went to Kroger to buy the stuff to make them for lunch tomorrow. This is the ONLY way I will eat yogurt. Yogurt is my very least favorite food I've ever tried, but this is one way that I can eat it.
I mix 6 oz. of Dannon plain, fat free yogurt with 1/2 cup old fashioned oats, 1 tsp. maple syrup, 1 scant Tbsp. mini chocolate chips, 1 tsp. shredded coconut, 1 tsp. sliced almonds, 1/4 tsp. coconut extract (the extract is a MUST). I just stir it all up and eat it that way. I know most people like to let their cold oats soak overnight in the fridge, but I think they get too mushy that way. So anyway, I am excited to have this for lunch tomorrow--it's probably been a year since I last made it.
Today is the day that the Fitness magazine is technically supposed to be on shelves (although some people have seen it earlier, even before me!)
I absolutely love my team! I know I say that at least a couple of times a day, but they are so much fun. Rik was actually in Alaska running a (very tough) marathon on Saturday! And Jennifer was in NY interviewing Linda for the From Fat to Finish Line documentary.
Well, I've got to get the boys' stuff together for their baseballs games tonight. I'm looking forward to going--it's gorgeous outside today!
And just because I'm curious... what is your favorite penny-candy? (These days, they are more like 7 cents, but you know... the tiny little pieces of candy). I think my favorite is probably a Tootsie Roll Midgee. Love Tootsie Rolls!
I finally found the "Fitterati" blog winners page (I'm sure you've seen it):
ReplyDeletehttp://www.fitnessmagazine.com/blog-awards/index/252-runs-for-cookies
AND, it says the website will feature one of the 12 each Tuesday, so I'll keep looking for yours.

Yay, Katie!!
Joan
Thanks for the links! I didn't realize they were doing the features each Tuesday. That will be fun to look forward to!
Deletethat's your Party City!?? We have a few around here and the candy section doesn't look like that at all!
ReplyDeleteI have to go with Tootsie Rolls as well. I'm really not a candy person but I do love me some chocolate.
Sour apple jolly ranchers are my kryptonite. Seriously.
ReplyDeletebit-o-honey... they are delicious and rich and the perfect amount!
ReplyDeleteOMG Bit-O-Honey. I forgot about those. What a great memory!
DeleteRolo's 12 for a $1.00 at party city.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite are caramels! When I was little Publix had a little station where you could get a candy for 5 cents and I would get one (or 5) of those every time I went grocery shopping with my mom :)
ReplyDeleteI always loved the caramels when I was a kid! The little square pieces wrapped in clear plastic. I still love caramel!
DeleteMy absolute fav, if I can find it is vanilla tootsie rolls!!
ReplyDeleteI'm that one weird kid who loved getting Mary Janes when we went trick or treating. Seriously, peanut butter filled molasses-y taffy - what's not to love?! I know what you mean, though, about wishing you could buy one piece at a time - that's one of the biggest issues I've had with California. I had access to one little bit of what I craved in Chicago and it was enough. Plus, when the choice was there, I rarely wanted it - now that it's not there, it's all I think about. Here, I can't just get a little frozen yogurt or one mini anything. I lost all my weight by *not* depriving myself, by feeling balanced with healthy choices. I'm very excited to be back in Chicago and have options again.
ReplyDeleteMary, I love Mary Janes too! All the other kids hated them, and I wound up with all of theirs as well as my own. I like the ones (they are like Mary Janes) that come in black and orange wrappers--they are softer than the actual Mary Jane candies, but the taste is the same. Good thing those are only out during Halloween time!
DeleteIm not sure if its the "official" name but we called them lollys. They are the sugary little suckers. More like smarties sugar, but in a bigger sucker form. (Anyone know what im talking about?) We could by them for a dime at the pool.
ReplyDeleteAnd swedish fish. Also bought at the pool for 2¢ each. Although i asked a guy from Sweden about these once. He had never heard of them. The marketing is all lies. They are just regular American fish.....lol.
I don't know what those suckers are called, either, but I remember them! We used to scrape them with our teeth. *happy sigh*
DeleteMy favorite penny candy would be fire cinnamon Jolly Ranchers. I think they were about 2 cents each when I was a kid. Or Atomic Fire Balls. Those were a nickel.
I'm aging myself--those penny candies (Jolly Ranchers, etc.) actually cost a penny when I was growing up. YIKES! Candy bars were a nickel, except for Cherry Mash which was always a dime.
DeleteI remember scraping those suckers with my teeth too!
DeleteJaw breakers?
DeleteI have several favorites depending on my mood. Reece's PB Cups, Peanut M&M's, Sour Patch Kids (which they have for 7 cents @PC) and Jolly Ranchers! Hubby and I just did the 15/$1 deal at Party City last week. He found more things he liked than I did, but they have a pretty good selection!
ReplyDeleteI have a serious sweet tooth, unfortunately! Some of my favorites are red licorice (has to be Red Vines), sour anything, lemon drops, root beer barrels....
ReplyDeleteLOVE how your team is bonding together! I bet that will make for SUCH a fun race!
I love licorice, but Red Vines are the only ones I DON'T like very much ;) And black licorice--I can't stand black licorice!
DeleteI just got my magazine in the mail! My favorite penny candies are banana laffy taffys, the ones with the jokes :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite penny candy is probably Bit O Honey! Killer on the teeth but soooo yummy! And your team is amazing! You guys are just a happy little running family! So glad the boys had fun. Candid pics are the best :)
ReplyDeleteI like the chewy candy like gummy bears and wine gums. I made a deal with my kids for the summer - I bought them each school workbooks (the between grades ones) and they have to do one page a day all summer. Every Friday I take them to bulk barn and if they did their pages that week they can choose some candy. This also saves me from buying it at the pool where they charge way too much for candy ...
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I'm going to have to do something like that to get my kids to read. I've been telling them they can earn XBox time by reading, but they STILL don't want to.
DeleteI love tootsie rolls!
ReplyDeleteEvery Saturday for lunch we go get cheesesteaks. It's not the best diet food, but I not only lost weight while eating them once a week, I have maintained it for the last year, so it must be okay, right? They almost always have a little bowl of those mini tootsie rolls sitting there and I take one while I wait for them to make my sandwiches. I think I looked them up once and they're only 25 calories. That's my candy fix! I also eat those little thin mints they give you at some restaurants after you eat--they are also only 25 calories and CHOCOLATE! But if I buy a whole bag of candy I am in trouble. A while back I got a bag of Peanut M&M's (for the grandkids--yeah--right!) and they have been sitting in my cupboard ever since UNopened. This last weekend I kept all 3 grandkids and they made short work of the bag of M&M's. I think I ate 3 or 4, but thank goodness they're gone now! I have been buying those 99 cent (on sale) boxes of Hot Tamales and putting 20 pieces in each of 5 baggies, for a 120-calorie snack. The problem comes when I eat more than one bag of them at a time, which I have been known to do. So it's really better to just have ONE piece of candy around to eat. I also love Almond Joys (the real things)--I used to buy a bag of those mini candy bars, and eat them all myself, nobody else at my house will eat coconut. I also LOVE Cherry Mashes and Snickers. Let's face it--I never met a candy I didn't like. Course that's what led to me weighing 328 lbs. too.
ReplyDeleteI hate yogurt too--I have eaten it in recipes, but plain or even the fruit flavored yogurt--YUCK!
Ugh-I HATE yogurt. I am learning to make different things with plain greek, but other than that blah!
ReplyDeleteWe have a party city too-my boys love the cheap toys in the goodie bag section. Now if they had mini bags of chips we'd be all over that! (We love our salty savory around here.)
I am so proud of your article Katie!! Mostly proud of you and how you continue to inspire people. I am a little less than when you started out. When I get discouraged I always think of how similar we are. It really helps.
I saw it the other day while my kids were getting their hair cut! Congratulations. I hope you get to see it soon too!
ReplyDeleteI'm still a sucker for double bubble gum (don't know why, since it loses it's flavor in about 5 seconds), or another favorite was jawbreakers. I also like the vanilla tootsie rolls that another person mentioned :)
ReplyDeleteCan I just say how jealous I am that you have a Party City at all?? We had 3 in Knoxville, but apparently the franchisee decided just to lock the doors one day. And of course that day was only a few weeks before I was planning to go by all sorts of decorations for a party we were throwing. It's been big, kind of hilarious drama between him and the corporate office (and the people in the Knoxville area!) ever since.
ReplyDeleteTo answer your question, I love fruity candy so I usually go for the Now-and-Laters or the fruit flavored tootsie rolls.
Those cinnamon one's. My boss brought in some for our candy dish at work and I swear I almost ate them all! ;-)
ReplyDeletebanana laffy taffy. yum! When I was a kid we would get the fake cigarette candy, anyone remember that?... thinking back to it now I can't believe my mom would buy it for us and let us pretend we were smokers...
ReplyDeleteI LOVED candy cigarettes! I used to think I was so cool, pretending to smoke ;) The corner store by my house sells them currently, but my kids just looked at me like I had two head when I pointed them out. I'm glad that they don't think smoking is "cool", like I used to! haha
DeleteIf it's limited to "penny candy" the only chocolate thing is probably Tootsie Rolls. They're not preferred, but they'd do the job.
ReplyDeleteHahaha he could NOT look happier in that picture! I'd be grinning like that too if I was surrounded by rows and rows of candy.
