R.I.P. Nutella

Well, today I decided that my jar of Nutella had to join my jar of Biscoff spread...
I have to put the dish soap in there, otherwise I'll dig it out of the trash. True story.

My lack of self-control is starting to get on my nerves! I do really well until about an hour after lunchtime every day. I think I need to start planning some sort of activity or project to work on during that time to avoid eating a bunch of junk.

I won't be buying any more Nutella or Biscoff spread--that stuff is expensive and I totally wasted a jar of each.

I was so excited yesterday when I saw my CafePress.com order in the mail--until I opened it and saw that they screwed it up. I ordered the shirt with the writing printed on the BACK of the shirt, and they printed it on the front. I was going to exchange it for a correct one, but I realized that the color was ugly anyway, so I decided just to return it (the only color options were white and pink--I chose pink, but it's an ugly pink):
That color against my super pale skin just don't mesh well.

So I called the company and explained what happened, asking if I could return it. They said they would just give me a refund, no need to return the shirt. At first, they weren't going to refund the shipping ($6) but I said that since it wasn't my fault they printed it on the front rather than the back, I should get a full refund, including shipping--and they agreed to do that as a "one time courtesy".

I also discovered that I'm going to have to return my Bondibands :(  The ones that I just bought are made of a different fabric than the other Bondiband I have, and they're very slippery--they won't stay on my big fat head. The fabric of my black one (a gift from a reader!) has some grip to it so it stays in place. I'd like to get a couple more that are made out of that fabric.

I'm just not having much luck with new running purchases lately... Nuun, the running shirt, and now the Bondibands.

I did, however, use my new shoes during my run today and had no problems with my feet. They're the same model of shoe (Brooks Adrenaline 11's), just brand new. It was raining outside, so I decided to go to the rec center and run intervals on the indoor track. I wore the Garmin foot pod, and I swear that the calibration must be way off. I calibrated it on the outdoor track at a an easy pace, and I think the pod is only accurate when I run at that pace. When I run much faster, it isn't accurate anymore.

It said my pace on my sprints was 8:30-8:45 min/mile... and I KNOW I was going much faster than that. My heart rate got up to 95% of the maximum, and I'm pretty sure I was running at about a 7:30-7:45 pace. When I slowed down to run easy between sprints, however, it seemed pretty accurate at a 10:30-11:00 min/mile. I have no idea how to solve this problem for the future. I like doing my intervals on the indoor track, but I don't know how to get an accurate measurement.
Tomorrow morning I'm supposed to run six easy miles with Jessica, then I'll take Saturday off, because my 5K race is on Sunday. I better get my PR, because I really don't want to have to do another 5K!

    1. PR is "personal record"... I'm hoping for less than 27:17 (my previous PR), but way deep down, I'd like to get sub-26:00 ;)

    2. Cool, thanks! Best of luck to you!

  2. Oh how I remember the days of putting chili powder and water in frosting jars so I wouldn't be tempted to dig in the trash for it in a moment of weakness. Glad to know I wasn't the only one.

    1. I did that just last night! Ah, the things we do....

  3. I totally understand about contaminating the temptations so you won't eat them. That was an episode of 'Sex and the City' too! Miranda made a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and every time she passed through the kitchen she'd take a sliver. Then she put it in the garbage and STILL took some out, so then she had to spray it with Windex to stop the madness.

I can't wait to hear about your 5k! I'm not planning on running one until June. I'm itching to get out there!!

  4. Bondi bands don't work for me either!!!! They slip off the back and piss me off. Also, I've had custom shirts made where they screwed it up. Front on the back. lol

  5. I tossed my cookie butter for that reason. Nutella & I are good...for now. =)

  6. I'm pretty sure that the foot pod calculates distance based on steps and how many steps you take in a mile. Since your stride probably changes at different paces, that's probably why it got confused.

  7. I have not tried the cookie butter. I can have nutella sometimes, but jars have to be few and far between. And sometimes when they are in the house I have to have it put up high on top of the cupboards or I will stick a spoon in there whenever I walk by the pantry.

Isn't it weird how you can be okay with a food and then all of the sudden have a binge on it?

  8. I use the Bondibands too. The fashion Lycra ones slip, but work ok. The actual wicking ones are heavier material and stay much better. I need to get some more of the wicking ones.

  9. I know how you feel about the binges Katie. Ugh, my weakness is any kind of carb it seems.

By the way, I saw these shirts on Pinterest that said "Will Run for Wine" and thought of you. The website looks a little weird, but thought you might want to check it out. =)

  10. I have no self-control around nutella, either, especially when nilla wafers are near. And I only buy the solid-colored bondibands, the printed ones don't absorb much.

  11. Sounds like a tough week for you Katie. But I am glad to hear your foot/feet are feeling better. I could not have any food in the house at this point that would be a binge food for me because I would eat it all for sure. For me that would be chips and cheesies. Good for you for getting rid of your bindge food! I hope your run is great and you beat your personal best!

  12. I am so releived that I'm not the only one that has to completely distroy certain foods before throwing them in the trash. If it's in a container or jar, you better bet I'd dig right back in there unless it was distroyed by something like dishsoap! We all of those moments of no self-control. I usually get that way when I'm anxious about something. Hoping tomorrow will be better for you!

  13. I heart Brooks Adrenaline's. I had a brain fart and bought a pair of Asics and I am NOT impressed. When the Asics bite it, I am going back to my Brooks and never forsaking them again. :)

  14. I just ordered custom non slip headbands from bic bands. I have a HUGE head, I have tried ordering different ones, but Sandy and bicbands.com is amazing. She made me bands to fit my HUGE 24" head. They don't hurt, they stay in place, they are affordable, and she donates proceeds charities. Go see her!

  15. Sounds like you had tough luck all around today, at least the shoes worked! A few weeks ago I bought some chinese food for dinner at work, and i ate SO much..it was pork fried rice, crab rangoon, and general tsao chicken..all of my favorites (it was a moment of weakness). I ended up squirting a whole bottle of ketchup on half of it so I wouldn't burst my tummy! I didn't feel good afterwards, but squirting that shit ton of ketchup on that SHIT food felt AWESOME! :) I hope you felt the same way when you squirted on that dish soap..empowerment!

  16. Good for you in getting rid of the nutella! That's the reason why I don't have certain foods in my house...I wouldn't be able to resist "snacking"...all day!

I find the foot pod to be inaccurate for me, too, but the opposite way! When I walk the mall, I find that it has me going way too fast. There's just no way I'm walking a 12:39 mile...I walk pretty fast, but not that fast! I wonder what the trick is...I may try recalibrating at the track using my fastest speed to see what I get.

Good luck Sunday! I hope it's a great day for a run!!

  17. Its weird growing up I ate junk foods because I wanted to...my mom was a binger....and I don't remember having snacky foods around ...so even at a young age I would binge..... some how in my adult Hood I figured binging was hand and hand with my emotion. My binge food are chops or ice cream. I'm self destructive by nature..
Keep up the good work....good luck!

  18. This post right here is a great example of why I love your blog!!! I love that you are so honest and real about what you are experiencing. I does make me realize that when the day comes that I hit my goal weight (I KNOW I can, I KNOW I can) that I will still have to work at it everyday...and that is OK.

    Thanks for keeping it real!

  19. I understand putting the soap in the jar. I would totally change my mind later too =). Your blog got me hooked on cookie butter. I have been addicted ever since I found it. I try to just stick to 1-2 tablespoons and use it to dip fruit in. I can see how someone could easily eat half a jar in one sitting though =). I love the shirt by the way. Great idea...too bad the order came out wrong.

  20. You need a Sweaty Band!!!

    http://sweatybands.com/

I use these for running and they always stay in place. Amazingly they've also been perfect for P90X. I never have any issues with them moving out of place on my head, regardless of how much I move or sweat. I've got both the thin one and the thicker one, but I prefer the thicker one since I have a ton of fly aways around my face.

  22. Lol, I was just picturing guys trying to read the shirt and it would look like they're staring at your boobs! You should give it away to one of your skinny readers for free advertising :)

  23. The foot pod just uses accelerometers to estimate your stride length, cadence, and then compute distance and speed. I have never used one because I don't trust them to be accurate, although I have read that they're not too bad these days. They can change if you put them on a different shoe, or a on a different place on your shoe, or change your form (which may change if you're running sprints vs running easy, or running on the treadmill vs. running outside) If you're running on a track, you already have the most accurate pace/distance measurement available to you. Just use a stopwatch with lap/split buttons to time each lap and then good old fashioned math based on the track length to figure out your pace. Doesn't get any more accurate than that.

  24. I lose control after lunch too. And sometimes after dinner. I'm classifying myself as a binge eater now after reading your stories. I have all the control till I eat lunch. Then I just want to keep eating. I've tried to adjust my lunches so that I feel more full. It doesn't matter. It's horrible! I will eat whatever I can find. It's not certain foods. It is lunch that triggers it. I'd totally dig something out of the trash so I understand the dish soap! Great idea! :)

  25. I have a lycra bondi band and it slips sometimes but works better on dirty hair. I love the way they look though, so cute.

  26. My current downfall is hummus and pita chips. I could eat the whole container in a sitting, but I force myself to use my food scale (http://www.amazon.com/Escali-Primo-Digital-Scale-Warm/dp/B0007GAX04) to weigh and measure my serving at snack time. I am still in the loosing mode and counting calories, but that having to measure out the portion really helps me keep accountable better.

(I can no longer buy nutella because my boys and I will just sit with pretzels and dip them in the jar without thinking...that stuff is addicting)

  27. I went to Trader Joe's last night looking for Cookie Butter. Once again they were out--and I'm thinking that was a good thing. It's probably better if I don't have a jar in my house or I'd need to wash it out like you did. Thursday evenings have been so bad for me lately. I'm up 3 pounds this morning from yesterday! I've never been able to buy a jar of cookie butter at TJ's (they're always out of the stuff!), so I don't even know what it tastes like. But from what everybody says, it must by Heaven, and I do LOVE the Biscoff cookies. Last night I got some of TJ's biscuits that must be just like the Biscoff's. At least you can have 4 of them for 150 calories, and it can be a SMALL treat. Once in a while. At least that's what I keep telling myself.
Good luck with the PR--you've been training so hard for that marathon, the 5K will be nothing and I know you'll get that PR!

  28. That is so disappointing! I hate when exciting purchases don't live up to my hype, haha. And so proud of you for doing what you had to do with the spreads. I can see myself trying to keep them by justifying the costs. Rock on!

  29. Good luck on your Sunday run, Katie! You'll do great, and I can't wait to read about it!

  30. Katie-
I don't blame you at all about the Nutella!!! I was wondering how you could resist it when you were talking about it recently!!! I guess that is why I can't but stuff like that!!!
It's too bad your shirt didn't turn out how you wanted it, it was a cute idea!!! What is a "yasso", by the way?????
Are you doing the Big Heart Big House this year? I just got an e-mail from them, it is April 15th, which I thought was odd, since it was in October last year. I haven't decided if I am going to or not yet.
I got some peanut butter GU today, and I am excited to try it!!! I also got these waffle cookie things that are made for eating while running, which I am also excited about. I also got new running shoes!!!! Yay!!! I hope they are OK to wear on Sunday for my 14 mile run, since I gave my old shoes to the running store to donate, so they are all that I have now.

I used to publish ALL comments (even the mean ones) but I recently chose not to publish those. I always welcome constructive comments/criticism, but there is no need for unnecessary rudeness/hate. But please--I love reading what you have to say! (This comment form is super finicky, so I apologize if you're unable to comment)
