Easter candy temptations

My legs feel like they are going to snap in half at the knee right now. I'm lying on the floor, and I just finished playing solitare (with real cards, not the computer). Chandler decided that he would settle all 23-pounds of cat right under my butt, on top of my legs. I managed to get my camera from the table and take a picture while holding the camera over my head...
Taking that picture was much harder than it looks, believe me.
Speaking of the cats, Jerry just showed me Paolo's "trick". Paolo is the first long-haired cat we've had, so the hairballs are new to me. But apparently, if you scratch the underside of Paolo's neck and his chest (which he loves) he then coughs up a hairball on cue. I didn't believe Jerry when he told me, so he showed me. Totally gross, but hilarious at the same time.

Today I was scheduled for a 4-mile run. I (once again) was really not wanting to run. I decided to go to the rec center and run on the indoor track so that I could see other people and hopefully it would go by faster. There were a few people walking on the track. I brought my iPod to listen to the radio, but it didn't distract me enough.

I actually started counting my laps, thinking that the foot pod was all wrong and I had actually run 5 miles when my Garmin said 2 miles--but after counting laps, I realized that the foot pod was right on target and my run was just going by really slowly.

Alicia came up to the track with a friend when I had 1.25 miles left. They were just ahead of me, so I just kept pace with them for the rest of my run. I really hope that taking the weekend off of running helps me to be excited for Monday's 16-miler. Our 15-mile run was so good that I felt like I loved running!

Jess and I decided we're going to La Pita (like usual) after our run Monday, but we're going to skip the side of garlic sauce that we always order with the pita bread while we wait for our food to come out, and we're going to ask for our bread to come WITH our meal rather than before. That way we won't load up on pitas and garlic sauce and then eat a huge meal.

I ate really well yesterday and today (tons of veggies and fruit). Today I've been craving Easter candy. I went to K Mart with Jerry so he could buy a new lunch cooler, and they had these HUGE Reese's peanut butter eggs. I really wanted one, but resisted. Then I saw these Reese's Pieces eggs, and those looked really good too. But I keep reminding myself that I have GOT to get my weight back down before this extra 5 pounds turns into 20 and then 50 and then 100.

We got a storm this afternoon and our power has been on and off all afternoon. I better post this while it's back on!

By the way, thanks so much for all of your votes on the Fitness magazine blog award! I can't believe how quickly I've caught up to a lot of the other bloggers. I'm sure it's just a promotional tool for the Fitness website, but it's still fun to be in the running :)

  1. Oh My STARS! I saw those HUGE Reese's PB eggs! For some reason EVERY type and size of R's PB jump out at me while I'm shopping! That might have to be my treat for Easter, unfortunately NOT the huge one.

Love the picture of your cat. Love, even more, the fact that you had a camera at hand!

Great job getting your run in! Can't wait to hear about your 16 miler.

  2. Running has been in my sh** list lately too. This week I decided to cut out run of my three mile runs, and hike for an hour instead. I dunno if it's the monotony, or what!

My kids would rather have cash than candy, so I've lucked out there! However, we are going to hide about 100 plastic eggs around the house, each with clues leading to the "special egg." We are pretty excited to watch them figure it out LOL!

  3. the easter candy is killing me!!!!

Just curious/ a thought….are you counting the calories for your GU's too? those are what? abt 100 cals? could be some sneaky calories added to your day! I hope you don't feel like that was mean! I've been training for a half marathon and feel like i've been too free with my diet lately and I was thinking about that stuff on a run the other day.

  4. Katie, you are so inspiring! I am a freelance writer and beginning runner...and I hope you don't mind, but I mentioned your blog in an article I wrote. If you want to take a look, here's the link: http://www.examiner.com/recreation-in-salt-lake-city/are-you-itching-for-that-runner-s-high. Anyway, thanks for blogging and keeping me motivated!

  5. I have avoided the Easter candy so far, but I can't guarantee someone else doesn't bring it into the house. Then all bets are off.

  6. Just found your blog through Hacker Half marathon. I am always looking for Michigan based blogs!! I really enjoyed your write up of being on Dr. Oz.

The Easter candy has made it into our house too. Yikes!!

  7. Have you ever considered listening to audio books while you run? I often get so absorbed in the story that I want to keep going just to hear the next part of the story. Just a thought ...
Way to go on not buying the candy. The longer you go sugar free the easier it gets.
BTW thank you so much for the link in yesterday's blog post - I LOVED the movie and I agree that the message of adding the good (instead of the focus on what to eliminate) was really powerful.

  8. I have to avoid having Easter (or any holiday) candy in the house until practically the day of the holiday or I turn into a hot mess of out-of-control. I managed to get through Valentine's just enjoying one homemade treat a friend gave me. I'm hoping to be equally successful for Easter :)

Good luck on your run next week! I have a 10K tomorrow that I'm both excited for and nervous about. I still haven't quite gotten to the point of being able to run a full 5K, so it will be a lot of walk/run intervals tomorrow, but I still get nervous. I can't imagine 16 miles!! That's simply amazing.

  9. That garlic sauce and pita, I can't leave it alone!!! :) It is so good, and I will really miss it when Hub gets new orders and we move this fall. That and the Fatoosh ( I probably didnt spell it right) dressing. *drool* ... now I want mid eastern food.

  10. Yay for the willpower! That's awesome -- I've been trying to be good all week, but today and tomorrow, I am letting loose and enjoying it. I know that, come Sunday, I will be right back on board.

Also, I thought about you today. I bought chia seeds and I am SO EXCITED to try your cold oatmeal recipes. I always want to try it, but never think to do it ahead of time, and I've never had chia seeds before. I also wound up getting PB2. All sorts of newness for me!

Good luck on your 16-miler when it comes up! I had a 7-miler today and I ran the whole thing (still getting used to the giddiness of being able to fully run long distances)!

    2. You will rock it! I just keep telling myself that it doesn't last forever and that I can push on until the end! Good luck! :)

  11. Oh my goodness ... those darn Reese's eggs! I work next to a walgreens and when things get slow or we just have cravings we walk over there. I've been good lately and if I am REALLY craving one I will buy 1 (and only one), but this week I was having some cravings from that TOM and bought a king size (2). Oh well ... it's a slight set back.

I like the idea of books too. I like to read on the eliptical and that always makes the time fly. I was thinking about listening to comedy on my ipod too, because that's a nice distraction too.

I LOVE your blog, but maybe part of the reason why you're feeling burned out is because you feel obligated to write about it. I don't have any tips for that, but just some food for thought. (No pun intended)

    Good luck with the 15!!!

  12. Easter candy is deadly to me . I think Easter has the best candy options of all hoidays. Just my opinion. Enjoy your rest weekend. You will do great Monday.

  13. Are those pajama bottoms from Target? They look just like a pair that I wanted SO BAD, but didn't fit. I almost bought the with the theory that I would fit into them eventually, but then decided it wasn't a good way to spend monday.

I really really really needed to hear you say you skipped the Easter candy. It has been the death of me this past month. I have to go to Target tomorrow and it will be hard for me not to buy any, but now you've motivated me to pass it up and keep going!

    P.S. I'm jealous you have a K-Mart. :)

  14. Funny you should mention Easter candy, I'm actually making home made Reese's eggs tonight! I'm using a recipe form a vegan cooking blog called Chocolate Covered Katie. The recipe is here: http://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/2012/03/29/copycat-recipe-reeses-peanut-butter-eggs/
I'm in a mini running rut. Since I just got back form vacation I'm trying to get back into my groove. I went out for a run and ran 1 mile! Gahh when I left I was running 7.5! I know I'll get back into it but it was so disappointing. Did you ever have braces? When I want to curb cravings, I walk around wearing my old retainer, lol! I don't want to mess with taking it out, cleaning it, eating something, waiting for the food bits to come out of my teeth, and putting my retainer back in. So I just stop snacking. Easter candy was hard for me to avoid in America too!!!

    1. P.S. I'm too cheap to eat the holiday candy I bought because then I would have to replace it! I still have half a bag of Dove Promises from V Day, but since I gave it up for Lent, I haven't had any. I think I might keep just 1 Reese's egg when making the kids' baskets.

  16. You're not missing out much on the giant Reese's egg. :/ My husband bought me one, and the peanut butter to chocolate ratio is just terrible. And the chocolate isn't soft like in the smaller eggs. Not as yummy as it looks.

Good luck on your 15 miler!

    1. Ginny Jenny, I would kiss you if I could!! The peanut butter to chocolate ratio is CRUCIAL, and if that isn't right, then I don't want it ;)

    2. Too funny! I completely agree. That is why I love the mini Resse cups (binge food) but not the regular size one. It's just something about the ratio. :)

  17. Sweets are not usually my treat of choice but I LOVE EASTER CANDY! My husband doesn't care about it that much so if I buy it - I east most of it. I bought some yesterday for next weekend and broke into a few of the bags - Dove coconut cream eggs! LOVE! I did control myself and I think I can avoid the bags until next weekend now - it's like I had to taste everything just to make sure there was nothing wrong with it:)

  18. My cat only weighs 7 lbs but she insists on sitting on my bottom half of my legs while I am on the computer, man do my legs kill after she gets off and she's such a peanut!

  19. I am encouraged by you, and at other times I want to stab you with a fork! (not really though! Haha) I ran 4 miles today but it took me 30 minutes longer! Oh well, at least I was able to run the whole thing from start to finish without stopping. Congrats on the blog nomination!
