So much candy

The last thing I felt like doing today when I woke up was run, especially at tempo pace. I decided to do it on the treadmill, because the treadmill feels so much easier than running outside. My tempo pace is 8:02-8:18/mi.

Jerry turned the treadmill around so that it now faces the shelf I hung for my computer, and I love it!

I decided to watch the pilot episode of Pretty Little Liars. I'd heard that it's an addicting show, so I wanted to give it a try.

At first, I started running at an 8:00/mi pace, but quickly changed it to 8:07. It took no time at all for my heart rate to get into the middle of Zone 4, which is where it should be for a tempo run. The run felt really hard though, and my heart rate kept creeping up. About two miles in, my heart rate was well into Zone 5.

So I started nudging the speed down a little, until my heart rate was back into Zone 4. At one point, I had to set it at 9:10/mi, which is nowhere near my tempo pace. The last mile, I was able to get back down into the low 8:00's, but I couldn't believe how tired my body was feeling today. It was a miserable run.

On the bright side, however, I really like Pretty Little Liars. It definitely keeps me wanting more, and I ended up watching two more episodes this afternoon.

Jerry tried out his new grill for lunch today. He cooked Italian sausages and corn on the cob. I sauteed some bell peppers and onions for the sausages, and the whole meal was delicious!

I cut up a leftover sausage and threw it in with the peppers and some leftover rice in the fridge to bring to my parents' house for dinner tonight.

The kids and I put together a gift for my dad. I saw something similar to it on Pinterest, so I bought my dad's favorite goodies to piece it together. I think it turned out pretty cute!

Yes, my dad actually prefers the Big K Diet Cola over Diet Coke or Pepsi ;)  Also included are Nutty Bars, Snickers, Milky Way, Butterfinger, Baby Ruth and Twix. My dad's sweet tooth is quite possibly as big as mine!

It was really hard not to just say "screw it" and eat all of the food that was at my parents' house (fried fish, french fries, lasagna, and garlic toast), but I knew I'd regret it later if I ate it. And the food I brought with me was really good. Dessert was even more tempting. A double-decker chocolate cake with homemade buttercream and a ton of candy...

Another Pinterest-inspired creation
I'm glad I didn't cave and eat it. There will be other fish frys, and other cakes, so I don't feel like I missed out. Lately, I've been feeling this lack of self-control, and today I felt very in-control, so that's a good feeling!

Good for you for sticking to your goal and eating what you brought. How you refrained from eating even a small piece of that cool cake is beyond me. The back of that cake would have been missing a patch of the Kit Kat fence before it even made it to the table. ;-)

When you finish Pretty Little Liars, you need to check out Weeds--very addicting. (However, don't watch it in front of the kids because there is some adult content in there that you probably don't want to expose your sons to just yet.) ;-)

  2. Good job for sticking to your plan! I, unfortunately, did not. My husband decided he wanted to go out for dinner tonight and I said "screw it" and ordered what I wanted. The leftovers? My "screw it" lunch for tomorrow. *sigh* and I wonder why my weight is barely going down these days.

  3. I've been looking for something to watch during my workouts over the summer while all my shows are on hiatus. I will have to check out Pretty Little Liars for sure.

That's so awesome that you resisted all that numminess! Food addiction is so damn hard. I've been in a rut lately with food...bored with the usual stuff. So I found your recipe blog and we've been making lots of your stuff! The crockpot italian chicken penne was SO good. I wish I'd found that blog sooner! I know you hate greek yogurt, but have you ever tried the cream cheese? I think it's made by Green Mountain or something. I substituted it in the recipe and it was delicious! Tastes just like the real stuff but saves you some cals/fat, etc. Anyway, thanks for that blog, it's going to feed me for a while! :)

  4. When I started Pretty Little Liars I ended up watching the entire first season in one sitting - by the end of it I'd been up for like 36 hours. That show is ridiculously addictive.

  5. Argh I know what you mean by "miserable run". Yesterday I went to do a quick loop and it was just awful. My body was NOT feeling it and I wanted to stop after running only 20 feet! Glad I stuck through it though.

Looks like the new grill is a great success! I love Pinterest, so many great ideas about everything and anything under the sun there :)

Hi Katie - Girls on HBO is another good one - a little raunchy at times but the writing is really, really smart in my opinion.

Way to go on sticking to your guns! I was okay - there were some delicious oily fried potatoes and onions that I should have said no to but didn't - up a pound today but could have been worse I suppose - will drink lots of water today :)

  10. Great job getting the run done!!
I'm the same - I always think it is easier to run on my treadmill! (years of running on it, I guess!)
I'm impressed that you were strong and didn't eat all the crap yesterday - way to go!!

  16. Hey Katie,

Quick question-- how do you avoid blisters on your feet after long runs? Lately, even running a 5k gives me this feeling of rawness on the lateral plantar surface of my feet. I haven't gotten any blisters yet, but I feel like they're on their way. Any tips/advice?

    1. Hey there Gloria! I used to get blisters until I switched shoes. It could be that your shoes are either too tight or just not the right fit for your foot. I prefer a wide toe box on my shoes, because then I don't blister.

I know that some people use Body Glide, or something similar, before putting on their socks--but I honestly don't know how that works, because I've never tried it. Sorry I can't be of more help!

  17. I tried making that cake once =) but I didn't have enough kit kat's so all the m&m's fell out haha!

  18. I like the idea of the peppers and onions on the sausage! We have those quite often but just plain.

My girls made the kit kat cake not too long ago too.

I need to get into the midset that I don't have to eat everything every time we go somewhere. Cake two times in one day is a bit much.
