This is random, but cute enough that I have to share: Eli decided that he wanted to eat his cereal out of a bowl that he made in art class. I had no idea how well it would hold up, but it seemed to do okay ;)
It kind of makes me want a whole collection of dishes made by my children...
I only had three miles on the schedule today, and I felt like going to the rec center to run on the indoor track. Not sure why, but it sounded like a good idea. I enjoy running there when there are a few other people around, because it keeps me motivated. Today, however, there was only one woman walking the track.
I was happy to have my foot pod (correctly) calibrated, and as I ran, the pace that the Garmin showed felt 100% right to me. I went faster than I probably should have for an "easy" run, but I tend to do that when I run by myself. It was so quiet in there, and since it was only three miles, I didn't bring my iPod.
After I finished with my run, I showered and decided to head out to Dick's to possibly buy an outfit for the marathon. And yes, I know that it's not a good idea to run a race in new clothes, but I've never had a problem with my running clothes making me chafe. I can't wear shorts, because the loose skin on my thighs would flap in the breeze and hurt like hell--nice visual, huh? And I almost never wear tank tops because of the skin on my upper arms (it also "flaps"). The only chafing problem I've had is from the seam of my sports bra, which I remedied by wearing my bra inside-out. It works!
Oh, and speaking of sports bras, I have to share a little tip that I learned from Jessica. Since we've been driving to different places to run, we've had the problem of having nowhere to store our car key. Jessica solved that with an elastic hair tie, and I think it's brilliant!
First, you loop the hair tie through the key (or key ring) |
Then do the same thing around your bra strap |
Anyway, when I got to Dick's, I was disappointed with the selection of Under Armour stuff. They didn't have any capris (or even pants)--they only had shorts, which I can't wear. I tried Dunham's after that, and they didn't have much either. So I think I will shop on Amazon tonight!
I recently gave an interview to Healthy Page about my weight loss. I hadn't seen the site before, but when I checked it out, I was impressed! Lots of great info and they feature different health, fitness, and wellness sites--and I was honored when they asked to include Runs for Cookies. You can read the interview about my weight loss here.
Thanks for the key idea! I tucked mine into my iPhone arm strap (not a good idea) and noticed it was gone as I walked thru Churchill Downs, as I looked around freaking the heck out, I spotted it about five feet back. My response, in front of this old man was "oh shit, I wad about to freak my freak" I almost felt bad for saying that, however, when the old dude broke out a personal power bar from his hydration belt, I wanted badly to steel it and cus him. I was completely unprepared on all aspects of the mini including nutrition.
ReplyDeleteSo again thanks for the brilliant idea!
I love the cereal bowl! Too cute.
ReplyDeleteThat was a great interview! This is my FAVORITE part:
'If you could say one thing to other women out there who are wanting to lose a large amount of weight, what would it be? How would you motivate them to know it IS possible?
I know how overwhelming it is to see that you need to lose 50, 75, 100, or more pounds. It feels like it will take forever to get there! But if you had started a year ago, you could be at your goal right now. So a year from now, you could be at your goal or you could be thinking back, “I should have started a year ago!”'
I'm always saying something along those lines! A quote I saw a long time ago that became a favorite is "A year from now, you'll wish you'd started today". I found myself saying something similar the other day. I was realizing how quickly the year is passing by and said "there is no reason I shouldn't be at my goal by now if I'd just stay consistent with running/eating right".
Right now I'm super determined (and motivated...for now ;)) to see this through. I'm going to be 40 in 3 1/2 years and I've held myself back long enough. I have not been overweight my whole life - really just since I've had kids. They are growing up fast and I want to be a healthy example for them.
I so agree Lisa--I keep thinking "oh my gosh it's almost mid May....if I kept with my plans in January I would be one serious sexy beast!" I think that's great to keep in mind when trying to lose weight and be healthy.
DeleteMy sweatpants have a drawstring waist. My car key is on a separate ring, so I just remove the key ring, loop one of the strings through it, and then tie and double-knot my sweatpants. It keeps the key secure against my body, and I barely notice the key moving.
ReplyDeleteI take my key and string it through my shoelace and then double tie it. Don't even notice it's there!
ReplyDeleteHave you ever tried Kohl's or Target for their workout wear? I'm still wearing a pair of C9 capris and I love them. With my 30% off coupon, I'm hitting Kohl's tomorrow!!
Target does have great workout gear.
DeleteI also LOVE target's C9 capris! 90% of my running gear is C9. I even love their "loose" tech t-shirts!
DeleteI 4th Target's C9 work out wear. I'm also wearing some awesome capris right now from Kohls that stay put when I run which makes me so happy!
DeleteI do buy Target's sports bras (I'm not at all picky about those). But I am very partial to Under Armour for my running clothes. I've tried a lot of other brands, and it just doesn't last long or feel comfortable to me. Normally, I am NOT a clothing snob (obviously! Most of my clothes come from garage sales) but when it comes to running clothes, I prefer UA.
Deletei do the key through the shoelace as well. i'll undo the shoelace a couple rows, then slide the key along the lace to where it's sitting on the tongue of the shoe, then re-lace and tie; so that way i won't worry about it accidentally falling off :)
ReplyDeleteGreat article on Healthy Pager. I'm always inspired by your story no matter how many times I read it :)
ReplyDeleteI really liked the article! I'm so glad that more people are getting the chance to hear your story and be inspired by it! Good luck finding a new outfit! : )
ReplyDeletePlease show us all your purchases on amazon!
ReplyDeleteJust ordered the heat gear pants through your site! Can't wait to try them on!
ReplyDeleteLove the heat gear line! That's what I am going to get for my marathon--hopefully something colorful, too ;)
DeleteCool key tip!! Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDelete~Ang
I always put my keys in my car's gas tank sitting on the gas cap! Shh, don't tell! :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a good idea too!
DeleteI love that my arm iPod band does have a place for a key, but such a smart idea for when I want to run naked (without any extra gear) ;)
ReplyDeleteLoved the article. You're awesome, as always!
I love the interview! You're a wonderful inspiration to others! :)
ReplyDeleteThat bowl is beautiful. Maybe that could be a summer project for the boys--make you that set of dishes! Heck, I'd buy a set too!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea on where to carry your key! LOVE IT! And also wearing the sports bra inside out to avoid the chafing. Gosh you're just full of good ideas today Katie!
When I saw the Crocs ad on your page today I almost swore. I just ordered two pairs on line, cause I couldn't find my size at the shoe store in the style and color I wanted. I love them. But if I'd have know they were advertising on your blog I sure would have ordered them by clicking on the link here.
I read the whole article on health page, and they gave your blog a great little plug at the end. Like Lisa E, I like when you point out that even if the amount of weight you need to lose is overwhelming, if you just start, in a year you could be there. And you will still be here in a year anyway--so why not lose the weight? I didn't paraphrase that very well did I? But it reminds me of the woman who was lamenting that if she went to medical school, she would be 40 in four years when she graduated. A wise person asked her, "And how old will you be in four years if you don't go to medical school?"
Life is what we make it! House (that cantankerous old doctor on Fox) just said "People Don't Change." But I think he's wrong. I'm not a big fan of House anyhow, I would hate it if I had a mean doctor like him. People DO Change--you are proof of that!
P.S. I love the pictures they choose to use on Healthy Page. WOW--you are skinny and gorgeous! Pictures don't lie!
ReplyDeleteCheck out dicks online, their selection is much better. I've been having trouble finding the workout clothes I'm looking for on amazon lately, which is sad cause they usually never fail! Good luck finding a cute outfit! You'll have to post a pic!
ReplyDeletekey idea is genius! Thanks for sharing. Boo on Dick's for not having pants or capri's! I'm with u flappy. Don't like shorts or tanks!
ReplyDeleteGoing to read Healthy Page now!
I love the bowl!!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Katie!!! I read you nightly and wanted to say hi! I feel like we are family haha!:)
ReplyDeleteAnyways, my partner works for Nike hq and so I now wear all their drifit running gear and I have to say it's the best! So supportive and comfy at same time. Also, I got a couple of their running shorts to wear over Capri tights and the shorts have an itty bitty pocket right inside the hem for a key:) so thought you might need to try out Nike;) lol
Good luck Sunday! I'll be cheering for you from Portland!
Amber
Do you have a Sports Authority? They usually have a ton of Under Armor stuff and I agree with the previous comments, Target is awesome for running clothes. I buy almost everything there.
ReplyDeleteNo, I live in a pretty rural area, and I actually had to drive 30 minutes just to get to Dick's! We don't have much of anything around here ;)
DeleteGreat article! I really enjoyed reading it...you really do give great, realistic advice that everyone can identify with.
ReplyDeleteAnd hey, the pictures were pretty good, too. ;) No, seriously, you look great in them, and I'm so tickled that you're able to use them so that others see just how truly beautiful you are!!
Eli's bowl is too cute! The blue reminds me of the sky. What is it a painting of? I totally agree; having a set of dishes made by your children.
ReplyDeleteVery clever about the key. I bought a Spibelt to hold my keys and cell phone, and a few tissues in case the nose wants to run too. ; ) I love the belt.
Dang, I think you run fast! Zoom, zoom
Dick's stink (those words look nasty together)regarding their women's stock of UA garments. The last time I was in the store I told a manager how disappointed I was in their inventory and gave specifics of what they should carry...and they were the same items you were looking! Speaking my disappointment probably was a total waste of my breath, but I felt better for the moment.
You did excellent on your interview!!! Great insight and advice...as always. Well done!
The painting is just a bunch of colors blended together--not an actual picture. He was VERY proud of it!
DeleteI also have a Spibelt, but I have a problem with it riding up. I like it to stay low around my hips, but it never stays there! Do you have that problem?
"Dicks stink"--LOL!
The key thing is a great idea. I've always just stuck mine down in my bra, but your idea is much better. At least you know it will be there when you are finished running.
ReplyDeleteI love the Old Navy compression capris. They are just $23 (regular price). I've found them for as low as $14 on sale. Zappos has workout wear too, and it's free shipping and free returns, just like their shoes.
ReplyDeleteI have Old Navy workout wear also! Forgot about them! I buy the ypoga pants a bit small so they don't fall down when running!
DeleteMy running pants have little pocket on the inside that is perfect for keys - you'd think it would irritate but it doesn't. If ever I buy a pair of running pants without a pocket I'll simply sew one in.
ReplyDeleteKatie, would compression clothing be of any help to you? It may help with any chafing bits and I know when I run my stomach wobbles which irritates the life out of me. I don't have compression clothing but I do have one of those slimming garments that is a bra and goes right over my bum too. I wear this on top of my sports bra sometimes and it really helps - I figure compression gear would do the same?
Great post as usual Katie, it's great to come on here regularly and top up on inspiration.
Thanks
Linda

Linda, I DEFINITELY need compression bottoms--that's what I always wear. My skin really is very loose, and the only thing to hold it tight and keep it from going all over the place is compression clothing. Plus it makes me look thinner ;)
DeleteThe bowl is so cute! I have some that my kids made, they definitely wouldn't hold liquid. Make sure it's food-safe though :)
ReplyDeleteYou are so inspirational, I visit every single day. I'm almost at the end of my journey, you've helped me a lot!
Have you seen those paint it pottery type of places? It's a great family outing and you could each do a bowl. We used to do it, we always dated the bottom and it's cool to look back and see what we did. It gets pricey so it was a treat for us.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with a cute new outfit :)
Hey Katie!
ReplyDeleteI've been reading your blog- I'm sort of beginning my weight loss journey now. Since I read your post about adds, and you said you get a percentage of the profit from amazon if people search things in your amazon tool bar and buy them from there, I've been making ALL of my amazon purchases that way. I hope it worked! Do you get commission of subscribe & save purchases too? I hope so!
I use a mini-carabiner on my spare keys when I run -- I double layer sports bras, so it works best for me if I loop it over my bra straps and then tuck it in between them. No movement, and it's guaranteed to be there when I get home!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to give you the BEST place to buy running clothes and shoes...www.runningwarehouse.com. They have really great sale prices too! And, FREE 2 day shipping and FREE return shipping! I'm so addicted to that site, I buy something probably every week, eek! I'm a complete Nike running clothes addict, but have a few UA things I like too (their hipster running underwear is awesome, as I don't like to go commando under tights). And every time you order more than a certain $ amount, you get free stuff, remember to add it at the bottom of your cart, I have so many free reusable grocery bags from them I've never had to buy any!
ReplyDeleteOff to read your article now...
Your interview was great! I think you gave a lot of good advise and I loved your 5 tips. ..'health is when my mind, body and soul are happy' - ok that should be your motto or a bumper sticker or something!
ReplyDeleteI have been having the hardest time trying to figure out what to do with my key! Thanks to this post, my run today was a lot less stressful! Loved the interview! :)
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why they don't put POCKETS in running shorts or capris? I like to keep my mp3 player in my pocket so I don't drown it in sweat...but its impossible to find cool running outfits where you can do that. I would seriously pay more for this..its easy to find men's clothes with pockets, but why not women's??
