A walk in the park

I had a rough evening yesterday, and I ended up bingeing. I was doing so well for two weeks, and yesterday was hard for me. I thought Eli was kind of faking being sick, so I wasn't worried about him. But he developed a fever, and then last night at around 8:00, he started hyperventilating. It was weird, because that had never happened before! He was panting and when I asked him to take a deep breath, he couldn't do it--it made him cough.

He was kind of panicky about the breathing, which of course made it even worse, but I almost called 911--that's how scary it was. Jerry ended up driving him to the ER while I stayed home with Noah. I was a nervous wreck, and just started eating--Biscoff cookies, Teddy Grahams, and salt water taffy (all things that I had in the house for a while without issue). I probably ate 1,000 calories, and then I dumped what was left of everything in the trash.

Jerry called from the hospital to say that they tested Eli for the flu, for strep, and took a chest x-ray to check for pneumonia--all were negative. They said it was just a virus. I hate paying a fuckload of money to hear those words: "It's just a virus". But I'm glad everything is fine. Better safe than sorry.

Today I had 5 miles on the schedule, but with the knee trouble I had yesterday, I figured it would be best not to run for the next two days so that I'm doing well for the 20-miler on Friday. But I was feeling guilty about my binge yesterday, and I wanted to exercise, so I suggested to Jerry that we go for a walk at the Metropark.

My mom asked Eli if he wanted to go rest at her house for a little while, and of course he did. So while he was over there, Jerry and I went to the park. Even though I planned on walking just for leisure (not a "real" workout), I wore my Garmin just to see how far we went. I didn't wear the heart rate strap, though.

In 2009, Jerry and I went on this same trail and we took a bunch of pictures. Some of them I now use as my "before" pictures, because I was 253 pounds at the time. So while we walked, we recreated the photos, which was kind of fun!

253 pounds vs. 138 pounds

It's so fun to see the difference when you see the same poses side-by-side like that! I remember those 2009 pictures like it was yesterday. I wore the scarf so that I could hide my fat neck and double chin. I didn't have a coat that fit me, so I just wore a sweatshirt, but I was cold. The jeans were a size 24W. And I felt like I looked "cute"--but was SHOCKED when I saw the pictures.

A couple more fun pictures... In May of 1999, Jerry and I went on our first date to the Metropark, and we had our first kiss on a bridge overlooking Lake Erie. So today, we tried to take a picture of us kissing on the bridge. I'll spare you the one that is actually centered, but I'll show you a glimpse of a bad one ;)

Spot where we had our first kiss
We found a tree that looked perfect for climbing, so we took a couple of pics there.

And when I told Jerry to pose in the tree, he told me it was lame and looked like cheesy senior photos. So he did his own take on it, naturally. Bahahaha! I found this pose hilarious:

A couple more "cheesy senior photos" pictures:

The "stare into your future" pose

The token "hold your head up with your fist" pose

Anyway, as you can see it was a GORGEOUS day, and we definitely made the most of it!

  1. I'm glad to hear the kiddo is okay but sorry it cost a f-ckload to find that out. We did the same with the Mr for a neck issue to "put his mind at ease." Thankfully nothing but $320 for an xray for nothing doesn't make me a happy Mrs.

I love the pics! I lost it at his pic spread eagle. Looks like he should be circling his groin with a caption saying "this is where the magic happens."

  3. Loved the cheesy senior pictures! LOL Oh, I remember those days. :)

Glad to hear the kid is good. I had the same issue today - took my 9 year old to the doctor because he got dirt in his eye and his vision was blurry even after flushing it. Turns out, the doctor told me to use regular eye drops to keep flushing it out. *sigh* At least it wasn't the cost of an ER visit but still...that's money I'd much rather spend on something else, especially when I could have tried the eye drop thing on my own without spending an hour and a half waiting on the doctor to tell me that. :/ But I don't mess with eyes...I'd hate for my kid to go blind because I was pinching pennies. LOL

  4. Nothing can make you feel more helpless than a sick kid. :( im glad its just a virus....and i would have called 911!! At least you were calm enough to skip that!

Screw the extra calories...you will burn them off with the 20 miler...back on track today.

  5. Sorry to hear about the binge, but it sounds like you reigned it in before doing too much damage.

It always feels terrible when you think your kid is just faking and they turn out to really be sick. That sounded like it was really scary!

  6. Those pics are eye opening, it makes me want to do the same in a year or two if I can get the weight off... thanks for everything you share with us!

  7. You forgot the picture with the my mooseknuckle. I love going on walks with you. It's so peaceful, relaxing, and fun. It's like going back to our dating days and always floods my mind with good memories. I think from now on we should do 'Senior Photos' everywhere we go.

  8. Scary kid sicknesses make me binge too...and then I get mad at myself which makes me want to just keep bingeing...its vicious cycle. I am glad you caught yourself and got rid of it. And the walk sounds like just what you needed. Your hubby is a good guy:)

Glad your little guy is ok.

I have been struggling with getting back on track and LOVED your post about motivation vs. determination. I actually copied down some of what you wrote in my weight journal so that I could focus on it. I am on day 2 of being back on track. I am determined to loose these last 7 pounds....how annoying, huh?!! Anyway, love your blog and think you are a total rockstar.

Thanks for always keepin' it real!

  9. LOVE your pics! Both the ones that show your weight loss and the cheesy senior pics! Haha! Very cute.
I had to go the ER about a month ago because I couldn't breathe and was having weird pains--never had that before. They said I pulled a muscle...grr! But I, too, was glad it was nothing. Still waiting for the bill for that one...glad your kid is ok, though! :)

Very stressful to have a sick child...and especially when need to do a hospital run. Thankfully little Eli was okay and hopefully he feels better today. Hope you're not beating yourself up over the lapse, because all of us will help push you back on the right track if we have to. : ) The pics were really fun & Jerry's legs look much longer all spread eagle on the tree bark. Your comparison pics are amazing...simply amazing! You should feel so proud of yourself. And great team name! Wishing your team the best; I'm sure it will be lots of fun!

  12. I love that you take pictures! The recreations are great ideas! You and Jerry look completely in love! Way to go, that is not always easy to keep going!
Don't sweat the $ it always manages to work out, the important thing is you piece of mind that Eli is gonna be ok.

  14. I spent some wee hours of the morning looking up binge eating treatment centers after a horrible month.... It's not necessary but it feels like it after!

  15. I love the team name! Of course, I suggested it, so I might be a little biased. Admittedly, I didn't cook that in my own little brain . . . I searched online : ) Either way, I think it's very suitable and I love the camo idea!

The side by side pics are SHOCKING!! Way to go Katie!

  16. Two steps forward, three steps back. That's true with everything, especially money. I'm just glad he's ok. Illnesses ALWAYS get worse at night and on holidays! My kids were both sick on New Year's Eve 1999. I videotaped the ball dropping with Dick Clark (awww) while crying because they were all asleep missing such a momentous occasion.

  18. For the record, I have a HUGE ass & definitely would NOT be offended if you had picked 'fatass to badass' (my personal favourite of the choices!)

Love the pictures... worth a thousand words as they say!

  21. I'm glad Eli is okay :) I tend to eat my worries, too, but as long as it doesn't put you in that "oh well, I was bad yesterday so I'll keep going all week and start again Monday" mindset it'll be okay.

I think you should go with Mission: Slimpossible because it would look good on a T-shirt. Also, love the before and after pics!

  22. hahah I love all your cheesy pics, so cute! Love seeing the before and after pics, so inspiring! Hope your knee holds up for the 20 miler, smart of you to just take it easy today

  24. Love the pics! Sorry your little guy was sick, but I'm glad he's ok. I would have probably done the same thing. I tend to get bingey when I am very anxious. I love the name for the team! I actually thought of naming my blog at one point, "Fat to Fit" but I felt like it was sort of being mean to myself and anyone else who was overweight. Even though you were much heavier in the first pictures, I think you carried your weight well, if you know what I mean, and you were very pretty then too.

  25. Glad your son is ok. Those pictures are great! You two are so stinkin' cute!

  27. You were cute at 253 pounds! I am sure Jerry agrees with me. Now you look cute AND fit. :)

  28. Your poor kiddo! I don't binge eat, I binge clean when I am super freaked.

Ha ha! I will never for get one of my guys friends said the photographer wanted him to do the fist to chin pose & he told her no way. She was totally offended!

You look so great. I noticed your posture is better too-your shoulders are open and you are obviously comfortable & happy now.

  29. It's true - you never looked 'bad' - always cute. I think the broken jaw has emphasised your chin now making you even cuter.
I got a swap parcel today, with snacks from America. I asked for reece peanut cups b/c of your thing with them, and she sent me a huge bag of reece eggs instead. They are so sweet! Serving sizes are way bigger too. She sent me lots of yummy tea and I'll get to try out Bubble tea for the first time. I love the breakdown of nutrition/calories - we do it a little differently here. Often I have to use a converter so it makes sense on the SP tracker. Those eggs are one egg a time for me. Imagine a full size of 5??? OMG. No wonder you avoid certain places!

  30. I have been following your blog for awhile. You're a huge inspiration; not only to people who need to lose a lot of weight, but for us too who are looking to lose 10 pounds and it's a huge struggle. Your honesty, beauty, real life attitude, and geniality, give a lot of hope to people who have anything from 1-200 pounds to lose. Congrats on the change and keep at it. You're helping SO many more people than you think!

  31. This was definitely the entry I needed today! I broke my diet 2 days ago and upped my working hours this week, so I've sort of been babying myself. Even though I had the time (I teach night school) I wasn't planning to run today, for no reason. I didn't feel like it. But this entry reminded me WHY I run! I want to take pics like this! I want the after pic! Thank you as always for the much needed motivation, especially today :)

  37. You and Mrs. Not About the Face and Jerry all crack me up this morning! Loved Mrs. NATF's comment about how Jerry's groin should be labeled, "Where the magic happens!" Jerry's pose is hilarious! Good stuff everybody!!

I also had a bad night last night. I wasn't hungry, but I just kept eating--finished off the bag of Pepperidge Farm cracker chips, had a 100 cal. bag of pop tartlets, finished off the rich, frozen fruit salad/dessert left over from Easter, had a WW ice cream bar. And that was after a too big supper of fish, (with a too rich mayo/butter/parmesan cheese topping--I didn't want you to think the fish was all taht healthy!), green beans (with potatoes cooked in them--again a good food make unhealthy by me!), corn on the cob and fried potatoes. HOLY COW! No wonder the scale said 154 this morning. YIKES! I've really got to do something to reverse this gaining trend. I was doing so well for so long, like you, and then SNAP! I'm sure I had over 2,200 calories total yesterday, and that is about 500 more than I should have.

I'm so happy you picked Weapons of Mass Reduction--that was my vote! Also loved all the pictures. The very first picture of you and Jerry started showing up on my screen as I was reading, and I thought,"Wow, Katie has put on some weight--that binge showed up on her face immediately." Then I scrolled down and saw it was a "before" picture. WHEW! You are looking positively TINY now. Well I guess you are tiny--must be nice. I struggle to remain normal. Last week, the nurse who scheduled me for my hysterectomy (ARGH!) next month, and who had never seen me before, said: "You are thin, so you shouldn't have any complications from surgery." I AM THIN! I don't know that anyone has ever used those words to describe me before!

  38. I love the picture with your husband's right leg spread way apart from his, left, it looks like he is airing out his balls.
You seriously look so.frickin.awesome. You are SUCH an inspiration to me! Keep it up, and keep up the side by side comparisons!! LOVE it!
I know it sucks to spend that kind of money to find out your son is okay. But at least you aren't spending thousands with him being in the hospital or needing more testing. I hope he feels better today.

  43. Katie-
Every post I read I just have to chuckle, because I feel like I could be writing the same thing! I am really struggling with getting control of my snacking since I am running longer distances. Right now the culprit is peanut butter eggs left over from Easter, but really anything will do! UGH! It is such a struggle at times. Love reading your blog!
