Hungry for Change

I was supposed to meet up with a bunch of the girls that ran Sunday's half-marathon today for breakfast, but I was so tired this morning that I decided to just stay at home and be lazy. It's weird, I went from insomniac to sleeping like a rock over the past week. Normally, I'm bouncing out of bed at 6:00, but lately I've been dragging myself out of bed at 7ish. I'm thinking it may have something to do with all the miles I've been running recently.

Anyway, I decided to watch a film called Hungry for Change online. It's free to watch online until March 31st. I really liked the film Food, Inc. and this is by the same producers. I wish I had watched it before I tried my "real foods challenge" last month. It's very eye-opening about sugar, high fructose corn syrup, aspartame, and all kinds of stuff that harms your body.

I LOVED this film, and I'm probably going to buy it so that I can watch it again and again when I need a reminder of why I need to cut back on the sugar ;)  The film recommends juicing, and I don't think I will ever hop on that bandwagon, but I am willing to add more fruits and veggies to my diet. I was so inspired by the film that I went to the fruit/veggie market after watching and picked up a lot of produce. I got all of this for $28 (and that's including an 8 oz wedge of parmesan cheese $$):

I've decided to make it a goal to use all of it up before it goes bad. That's a challenge in my house. I buy produce with good intentions, but end up throwing half of it away because nobody eats it. So I washed and chopped up the veggies and made them easy and accessible for me and the family. I made some hummus for dipping.

I think my kids just may find them appealing, if I give them some ranch dressing for dipping, of course.

One of the things that the film points out is that you shouldn't worry about cutting things OUT of your diet, but focus more on fitting things IN--like the veggies and fruits. Once you fit those in, the other stuff starts to get pushed out.

Anyway, check out the film, it's worth your time!! And it's only free until March 31st.

I was reading my Runner's World magazine today and came across this page that seemed was printed just for me:

It says to limit your reward calories after a run to 200--or 400 for a "really" long run. Bahahaha, I have been rewarding myself with nearly all the calories burned on my really long runs, and about half the calories burned on my other runs. Maybe that is why my weight is up 5 pounds ;) I really should try and cut back, but low-fat ice cream does not seem like a "reward" to me. I'll stick with the good stuff, and just try to have a smaller portion.

I was just notified today that my blog was nominated for Fitness Magazine's 2012 Fitterati blog awards for "Best Weight Loss Blog". Thanks so much to whomever nominated me! However, the other nominees have been up for about a month now, so I'm way behind the game.

  1. Voted for ya! (I was already registered so it wasn't a pain, lol). Anyway, I recently saw Hungry for Change too and I loved it! I knew I was addicted to diet soda, but not on the levels they talked about. I really should stop that bad habit...

  2. Have you seen the documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead? If you have netflix you can get it on streaming. It is so good and it's all about juicing. I am not a big veggie eater but I decided to a 10 day "reboot" which was juicing and eating nothing but veggies. It was so eye opening, I discovered several veggie juices that I liked as well as vegetables to eat that I never thought I would like (as I haven't liked them before) and new ones I never tried, like Jicama, fabulous and is nice and crunchy in salads.

  3. I watched Hungry For Change last night, and wow. We are big fruit and veggie eaters. I always cut and wash everything right when I bring it home or it will go bad. I thought it was super eye opening because we eat A LOT of prepackaged "diet" and processed food. Things are on the change at our house.

  4. Congrats on being nominated!!!! That is so awesome! I've voted for you! :)

I'm going to watch the movie this weekend. Thanks for sharing the link. I recently read a blog where someone posted a link to a list of "8 Documentaries that will change the way you look at food". A lot of them are available on Netflix so I've added them to start watching.

I'm not a big fan of juicing, but I will say that I LOVE my juicer/blender (Vitamix) because I can drink a daily protein shake and throw in a ton of extra goodies. I don't mind the taste of spinach in the shakes so I usually put in a handful every time. If I can drink a glass of juice/smoothie and knock out all my daily veggies needed, I'm all for it. HAHA!

  5. Yeah for the nomination!

    How long is the video?

  6. I can only do so much at one time. I tried the juicing thing and I could not STAND the way it tasted, all foamy... not for me. I know I should eat more fruits and vegetables. I'll get there eventually.

Congratulations! I was already registered, so it was easy!

  7. Oh my gosh, my husband and I were just talking about eating more fruits and veggies! And eating less crap, too! A friend of ours (who is 32 and younger than both of us) just had a stent put in because one of his arteries was 95% blocked. What an eye-opener. We definitely need to tweak our eating habits to try to avoid the same fate. Our problem is similar to yours-I have the greatest intentions and buy a ton of produce, and only about half of it gets eaten before it goes bad. Definitely something to work on!

  8. I started having a green smoothie every day, so its a start!

Oh I LOVE parmesan cheese, its one of my favorite things to buy at Trader Joe's!!!

Congrats on the nomination, I will vote for you! If you win, will you give a speech?

  9. Congrats on the nomination! I'll head on over to vote.
Do you have a great hummus recipe? I've been buying it lately and my kiddos LOVE it. I'm sure it would be much cheaper making it from scratch.

    1. Making hummus is very simple and it's definitely a heck of a lot cheaper! You can find my recipe here: http://runsforcookiesrecipes.blogspot.com/2011/08/katies-hummus.html

  10. Hi Katie!!

I bought a ninja from Wal-mart 85.00, so that I get to make a pulpy mess. The thing I don't like about juicing is the amount of food that you throw away. So I bought the ninja and turn kale, spinach, arugula into a pulp, add almond milk and an orange and half a lemon, and I am ready to go.I am a pretty sickly person, and since I started having a drink every morning I haven't been sick once. There has gotta be something in this!
You may want to try it.

  11. I voted! And I plan to watch that movie this weekend, thanks!

  12. Thanks for the heads up on the movie. I'll have to give it a watch tomorrow since soaps are mind-numbing and the Mr will be home teleworking. We'll never juice either but I'm glad to see you have cut up veggies. We do that every grocery trip and it makes them easy to grab for my lunches. If they get toward the end of their life cycle you can either soak them in ice water to revive them a bit or freeze them and use 'em in stir fries. (Fries? Frys? *shrug*)

    Congrats on the nomination!

  13. 42 votes now I've voted. I hope you get lots more now people know about it! Good luck, you've certainly inspired me, and I'm 2 months into my newest journey for weightloss. Cheers!

  14. You are up to 50 votes now. I was already registered so I voted for you!

I've never juiced. And honestly, I just hate the blender period so it doesnt get any use in my house. I cannot stand how loud it is so I refuse to use it. But my son is what we call a "fruititarian." We have a really hard time getting him to eat meat but put any fruit in front of him and he will eat it. His favorites are raspberries and Kiwi. I even planted a raspberry bush for him this year!

  15. I've been reading for a while, but don't often comment. I thought I'd comment tonight because I appreciate you sharing the Hungry for Change video. I can't wait to watch it. I need a new motivation tool, and this sounds great..thanks for being so inspiring! :)

  17. Hey! Did you miss me? I was just in Oregon and Washington visiting friends and family! I just got all caught up on your blog again, phew! This was the first vacation of my life where I didn't gain weight! Oh, and I voted for you! I want to check out that movie. I watched Food Inc and was grossly fascinated by it. Why are we fascinated by such weird things?! haha

  18. That's a great deal for all that produce! I love juicing, it really boosted my momentum, but I totally agree with the just adding more fruits and veggies in! I hated salad for forever and now that I make my own FUCKING delicious dressing <---sorry that was totally necessary cussing...I have a couple salads everyday! :) I love that article! I voted for you!!!

  19. Congrats on the nomination! I'm heading over to register and vote now! I have read a lot of blogs, but yours is the only one I check several times a day to see if you've posted yet! I hope you win!

I could never juice either. I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with both kids and the idea of drinking ANY kind of juice grosses me out! I really like vegetables though - so that is in my favor! Tonight I made a chicken soup (my poor son is really sick) and I put in tons of carrots, celery and kale - it was awesome and both kids ate all their veggies! (oh and I always sprinkle a little parmesan cheese on my soup YUM!)

  20. I have heard about this movie and the juicing. It sounds interesting and I think the whole adding more healthy things in makes so much sense. The juicing is something I'm not sure I could do because I would not feel satisfied with drinking a meal, at least not often. At the beginning of the week I usually go to the store and stock up on things that I will eat for most of the week. I have been very good about eating it before it goes bad. I will make a huge salad out of veggies that are left so they don't get wasted or cook some of them in an omelet.

Today I went to pick up my race packet for a 10k I am doing this weekend and I saw 2 shirts that reminded me of you. One said, "I run for wine" and the other, "I run for chocolate" :)

  21. I nominated you for this weeks ago when I saw a bunch of other bloggers posting about it! I'm sure other people did too. I like to go through contests like this to find new stuff to read...and honestly, the other weight loss blogs had nothing on yours! I went and voted for you, and it seems like you're catching up with some of the others that have been on there longer. I'm not surprised at all :)

  22. That is awesome! I registered, ordered the magazine and voted! You are up to 73 votes. I love veggies, but definitely need to add more. Your pics make me wanna run out and buy a bunch. I found Sabra hummus in single serve containers at BJS. 12-2 oz containers for $6. I was very excited and picked some up. Woo Hoo!

  23. Awesome :) I voted. I feel you on veggies going bad before you can eat them all, happens to me all the time so now I usually just get frozen and a just a few fresh fruits at a time (usually apples, bananas and oranges).

  24. I voted for you! I think you are the best, and it was worth registering to voice that opinion!

  25. I voted! I don't know what I'd do without my daily dose of Katie. ;) I think it's great that you were nominated!

  26. Perhaps post the link to vote on fb? Your numbers are climbing quickly, you could win if you get the word out!

  27. I voted for my favorite blogger--that's you Katie! You are already in 7th place, which isn't bad. Looks like there's 3 pages of blogs and you're on page 1, that's great especially considering you got into the game late. The blogger in number one is kicking butt though--wonder who she knows? I'll vote as often as I can--can you vote every day? You should definitely post the link on FB. Registering was a snap!

Wanted to tell you--ever since I read your blogs about it--I have been wanting to try cookie butter so badly, even though I realize I shouldn't even have it in my house either. But I'm not a huge peanut butter fan and the jar of that has been in my cupboard for months, I never eat any. But whenever I stop, Trader Joe's is always OUT of the cookie butter. However, tonite at Walmart I found Biscoff spread, and I thought I remembered you saying it tastes the same. I know I bought some Biscoff cookies at Walgreens a while back, and loved them. I was hoarding them, just having a few for a treat now and then, and then son discovered the bag and finished them off. He loves them. He is a big peanut butter fan too, (he eats creamy, I prefer crunchy, that's why the crunchy jar lasts forever, but we have to buy creamy peanut butter all the time) so I'm guessing he'll discover the Biscoff spread and snarf it up too. I got a jar of creamy AND a jar of crunchy. Had a taste of the creamy--OMG--it was SO GOOD! I'm definitely going to have to try and forget it's in my cupboard. Sometimes if I put things OUT of sight, they're OUT of mind. Not always--but sometimes. Wish me luck!

  30. I am a believer in juicing! In fact, I am on day 27 of my 40-day juice fast. I don't think that long-term fasts are for everyone, but it was the only way I could get through the depression, fat, etc.

I am blogging about it at http://juicedietingforhealth.blogspot.com/

I also provide *some* recipes for juices - but I need to work harder to more up. I also talk about my lessons learned, the benefits, etc.

Do consider having a juice as a snack or in lieu of dinner. They really do taste quite fabulous. I hope that helps!

  31. I got into clean eating after reading Tosca Reno's Clean-Diet books. It's eating "real" food, but focusing on natural foods that don't contain more than 6 ingredients listed, and sugar isn't one of the first three ingredients. The rule is that most white food is out (flours, sugars, breads, etc), and that if you don't know where it came from (ex: bicarbonate disodium phosphate... umm... what?), you shouldn't eat it. I am personally amazed I was able to do this. I used to buy all the frozen diet meals and 100 calorie snacks when I was trying to lose weight and be healthier; EVERYTHING was prepackaged because it was easy and the nutrition was clearly outlined for me. But I genuinely feel better when I eat clean. Even if my weight doesn't change (but I have lost almost 25 pounds since I started changing the way I eat), I don't feel guilty about eating. And I've learned about foods I had never tried before (because I assumed they were "icky"): quinoa, lentils, hummus, kale, spinach... And even thought the clean diet doesn't really promote calorie-counting, I know myself well enough to know that I need some sort of goal each day... otherwise I am likely to eat my weight in clean food ;) Sorry; I am rambling! My point is that you actually seem to eat a pretty clean diet as it is, but for me, clean-eating was a compromise between "dieting" and "real food." So I thought I would mention it ;) The early entries of my blog chronical my journey towards clean eating, if you are interested :)

  35. Woohoo! From one Katie to another congrats on your nomination. I just read the article this morning on the Fitterati Blogger Awards and your blog instantly came to mind. I have a subscription for the magazine so I will head on over and put in my vote.

Looks like you got a pretty decent score on the produce. I like purchasing some of my fresh fruits and veggies from local farmers in our area and at the Fresh Market. They're always so good and full of flavor. I'll have to check out the video, thanks for sharing.

Hope you have an awesome weekend!

  36. Hey Katie! So I watched Hungry for Change about a week ago and LOVED it. I've been reading a book by Jillian Michael's called Mastering your Metabolism. The book and movie go hand-in-hand! So I felt super inspired and bought my very first juicer! (I'm not a veggie eater and there is no way I could eat ALL the recommended servings per day. So juicing is the next best thing!) So I received my juicer 3 days ago and I've been using it twice a day everyday! I LOVE IT. I get my full amount of veggies in ONE glass! (even including the super nutritious ones I'd NEVER eat whole like Kale, collards, and wheat grass!) It's only been 3 days and I feel great! I'm excited to see the healthy changes as I continue juicing!!!!!

  40. I've been reading your blog every once in a while. I was just wondering, why you started WW again instead continuing with the intuitive eating? Maybe you've written about it already, but I haven't read the post.
I like to do sports, but I've always struggled with weight (I'm moderately obese). Lately I've been wondering how I could change my eating habits in a more natural way rather than dieting/counting points/calories because I've tried counting and it gets stressful. I don't want to get too obsessed about food.

    Hope you'll win!

    1. I was doing well with the intuitive eating for a couple of months, but I eventually was eating when I wasn't actually hungry. I wasn't binge eating, but I was eating more than necessary, and my weight wasn't budging. I wish I could go without counting points/calories, but I just seem to do much better with that structure, unfortunately.

But please--I love reading what you have to say! (This comment form is super finicky, so I apologize if you're unable to comment)
