Anxiety binge eating

The boys spent the night at my parents' house last night, but I still got up at around 5:30 (which has been the norm lately). My brother Nathan came over at 6:00 to pick up Bailey (his dog). My cats finally came out of hiding--I hadn't really seen them for the two days that Bailey was here.

I spent some time this morning checking out hotels in Key West, and I took my brother Brian's suggestion to book the Southernmost on the Beach. This is for the Ragnar Relay I'm running in January. My parents said they would watch the boys, so Jerry is actually going to go with me and we're going to make a vacation out of it after the Ragnar. Our 10-year anniversary is next year, so we're going to celebrate it 7 months early ;) I'm SO excited I can't stand it!

Jerry and I are going to stay in Key West for three nights following the Ragnar. He's not running the race, so he'll be on his own for a couple of days while I'm racing.

I picked up the kids at 9:00 to take them to swim class, and we stopped at Kroger on the way home. I was feeling really anxious and stressed and I bought binge food--a doughnut (I don't even LIKE doughnuts!), a Reese's egg, a Cadbury Creme Egg, and Velveeta Shells & Cheese (again, something I don't even like!).

When we got home, my anxiety was even worse. I am seriously going crazy without my ice! One of my stress relievers is to play solitare with a big cup of ice--yes, it sounds lame, but it works for me ;)  Without the ice, I find myself snacking constantly. I ate the doughnut, and the candy, and then I made the shells and cheese for lunch--which I shared with the kids, but I still ate a large portion of it.

After that, despite being full, I was still looking for something to snack on. I took a Xanax for the anxiety, hoping that would help, and it did a little. But shortly after that, my friend Rebecca stopped by to pick up Noah for her son's birthday party. I had completely forgotten about it! I told her that I would just drive him there (it was at a bouncer-place). I rushed to get him ready and then we left for the party.

When we got there, Noah started freaking out and crying. When I asked him what was wrong, he said there were too many kids there and he wanted to go home. I was dumbfounded, because he's never reacted like that before. I was not happy about it, but I apologized to Rebecca and we left. I had promised Eli I'd take him to spend some of his money while Noah was at the party, so I couldn't back out on that. We all went to the store and Eli picked out his toys.

I bought a couple of things that I normally cannot have in my house without bingeing. But I've been doing well with peanut butter lately, so I'm hoping that I can do it. I am making it a goal to make these last until the end of March:

I never actually tried the Biscoff Spread--but you know how much I love the Trader Joe's Cookie Butter, and it supposedly tastes exactly like it. When I got home, I tasted it, and it really is EXACTLY like the Cookie Butter. So good! But it's going to last until the end of March, I promise.

I've been making Lori's One-Minute Muffin every single day for breakfast, and I love it! I've been seeing it on her blog for a very long time, but I never tried it because it just didn't sound very good. But for some reason a couple of weeks ago, I tried it and LOVED it.

I make the "original" version she has posted, but I use 1 Tbsp. of banana baby food instead of the 1 1/2 tsp. of oil. I had the baby food sitting in my pantry (I was going to use it for baking at some point, and just never did). It didn't add any banana flavor to the muffin (which I was happy about, because I wasn't going for banana flavor). I also add about 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract. I just mix everything together in a large mug (you don't even have to spray the mug with cooking spray) and then microwave it for about 1 minute 15 seconds. It pops right out of the mug.

The muffin has the best texture and is super filling. I think I always avoided it because it just didn't seem like it would fill me up. I was completely wrong. I split it in half and spread each half with Cinnamon Raisin Swirl peanut butter...

That muffin is actually the reason I bought the Biscoff Spread and Nutella. I am out of the Cinnamon Raisin Swirl peanut butter (and so was Whole Foods last time I went), so I wanted something new to top the muffin with.

Just a few words of caution: the muffin is made with 1/4 cup of ground flaxseed, which is a lot if you're not used to eating flax. I had a stomachache in the evening after I ate it the first couple of days. Now I'm used it. Maybe start with half a muffin at first ;)

  4. Biscoff spread is amazing - they have a café in San Francisco since that's where their US headquarters is. They sell jars of the spread there - creamy *and* crunchy. The crunchy is full of cookie bits! Unbelievably good.

  8. Nutella is sinful. I adore it, but I can't have it in the house. I will sit on the couch with Nutella in one hand, a spoon in the other, and I will eat half the container in one sitting! I first found Nutella in France when I studied there years ago, and I brought back EIGHT containers of it, thinking that I'd never seen it in America. Lo and behold, I get home to find my local Kroger sells it!

    1. I've done that before, eating an entire jar of Nutella in one day! I'm hoping that by making it public on my blog that I intend to keep it in the house for the whole month, I'll actually follow through ;)

That's so funny about finding it in France and stocking up. My friend's husband did that with beer. He went to Germany and found an awesome beer he loved, and he went through hell to bring a bunch back to the states. Then he found the same beer at the local grocery store! hahaha

    2. May I suggest Nutella and strawberries as an alternate use of it. It tastes like chocolate covered strawberries though I'd like to think that the Nutella is less calories than chocolate would be. Katie....I started reading your blog a couple weeks ago and look forward to your daily posts. You are where I aim to be. I used to be a runner and have run 2 half marathons. My last one was in 2007 just after I got engaged...fast forward a couple years later and I'm happily married with a 3 year old dog and an 8 month old baby. The only thing I'd like to change is my size.

  10. Sorry you had a binge. Those suck. I hate when I just start eating and can't stop.

Glad you like the one minute muffin! They are filling for their size. I actually like to put the batter in a waffle iron (which I know you got rid of) - it gets a little crisp that way.

  11. Katie.....
When you guys go to Key West check out Sloppy Joe's bar! I LOVE it.... It's such a cool place.... Kenny Chesney sings about it in one of his songs. It's world famous and a staple of Key West! :-)
    Enjoy your weekend,

  12. I'm so sorry your anxiety was up today :( I am hoping for a better day tomorrow! I can't wait to see all of your pictures from Key West! I always wanted to go there when I lived in Florida, but never did :(

  13. I also wanted to say that I craved ice during my pregnancies although I didn't have a problem with anemia either. I would go through drive thrus asking for ice! it was BAD!!

  14. My husband and I got to Key West regularly and we stay the the Key West Harbor Inn and it is amazing. Free breakfast and happy hour every day pool side. We would never stay any where else.

  15. You booked your hotel already? What about flights? Did you do that too? Like I said before, I don't think my husband would let me go alone- worried something would happen to me all the way down there. So book in Key West because that's where the run ends? Makes sense.

I haven't bought another jar of Biscoff, but I do have Nutella in the house. I've only eaten it on my morning toast. And I've got some of my friend's hooked on Lori's muffins. I use applesauce to replace the fat and I've added chocolate chips sometimes. They are so filling with a nice huge cup of hot tea or coffee. Perfect for this time of year!

    1. I haven't done flights yet. I'm debating whether to use a buddy pass from my brother (super cheap, but risky of not getting a flight). I think I'm just going to book it and get it over with!

We'll need a hotel in Miami for Thursday night (the whole team will stay in one spot), and then Key West is on Saturday night.

  16. OMG I absolutely LOVE Biscoff Spread. I refuse to buy it though because that is one of the foods that I really have no self control over. I literally eat more than half a jar in one sitting. It's ridiculous, but it's amazing.

  17. Oh my. Nutella--I love you. I can't have Nutella in the house either. Thank goodness I didn't see this post until AFTER my husband got back from grocery shopping.

  18. That looks like Jorge Cruise's recipe for "Skinny Muffins", I don't agree with his Belly Fat diet because it seems so extreme to minimize carbs to that level. But he's got a lot of good points about sugar and other things. He's even good friends with Dr. Oz! The only difference is that Jorge uses Stevia in his muffins. I'm on his listserv and got the email with the recipes just a couple of days ago, I'm excited to try them out! I'm super pumped about Ragnar! I spent at least a half hour perusing Youtube videos of this years one on Friday, w00t w00t!

  19. Im telling you what be very very careful with the biscoff spread. It is the devil in discuise. I personally cannot have that (nasty) wonderful stuff anywhere in my house. I will eat the whole jar in a matter of a couple hours. One large spoonfull at a time OMG is it good. I simply cannot buy it. And Katie honey you can buy a bag of ice and crush it one large galss at a time. It beats the hell outta cadbury eggs...well almost lol

  22. Hey Katie, so I'm a long time reader/blog stalker - first time commenter.. :)

I bought some cookie butter at Trader Joe's the one day, after reading about it here, and unfortunately I ate it. With a spoon. In 2 days. Needless to say, I WILL NEVER BUY IT AGAIN.. Haha!

But, I have found a wonderful alternative... TJ's also carries single candy bars of dark chocolate filled with the cookie butter. So, I buy one at a time. :)

A while back my workout buddy/bff and I were in TJ's and when she put a jar of cookie butter in her cart and yelled "NO!" across the aisle. I went over and told her about my Great Cookie Butter Mistake and she put it back. We now joke about "Friends don't let friends buy cookie butter" and "That meal looks great, but it's a little too 'cookie butter' for my calorie counter".

P.S. The amazon price is actually better than the TJ's price (before shipping anyway)

Thanks for your contribution to our fun inside joke!
